00:00Well with me on the sofa is our reporter Maisie Walker and of course you can't
00:04miss it our KMTV pumpkin that was painstakingly carved by one of our
00:08production assistants earlier. Now Maisie it seemed like people in Rochester
00:11weren't actually too keen on getting a pumpkin this year. What happens to the
00:16pumpkins that don't get bought up in the shops? Well yeah I mean as we saw there
00:19which might be quite surprising that most people aren't overly getting into
00:23the Halloween spirit at the moment but you know some people are picking up
00:27their pumpkins and carving them now most people aren't but with two weeks left
00:31to go I still haven't got mine although we do have our KMTV pumpkin here in the
00:36studio. The problem is which you know most people were echoing like we saw there is
00:41that if you buy your pumpkin too early and it could it could start to go off
00:46before Halloween even gets here and every year huge numbers of pumpkins end up
00:51going to waste so according to the waste and resources action program known as
00:56wrap. Pumpkin sales are expected to soar around 90% in the weeks and days
01:02leading up to Halloween and more than one million pumpkins are bought for
01:06decoration in the UK every year but according to another charity called Hubbub
01:12around 18,000 tons of pumpkins end up in landfill without ever being used as food
01:18so to put that in perspective 18,000 tons that's about 18 million kilograms and if
01:25there was an animal in the wild that weighed that much it would be nearly a
01:29hundred times heavier and then the largest blue whale and yeah I don't know
01:35too much about aquatic life but that's pretty big like a lot of pumpkin so the
01:41problem is is many people don't know what to do with their pumpkins after
01:45Halloween and kind of comes about so that's what I'm charities are kind of
01:48campaigning for at the moment. And what ideas do you have on how people can use their
01:53pumpkins for something edible? Well I did a little Google search and so it depends on
01:59whether you fancy something savory or or sweet so for savory dishes and you can
02:04try pumpkin soup which is a classic and pasta or surprisingly so even a curry and
02:11but if you've got more of a sweet tooth there's pumpkin pie muffins and even
02:14pumpkin lattes and you can also roast the seeds and to make them into tasty snacks
02:20which I didn't know either and so the campaign charities are campaigning for you
02:25know if you buy your your pumpkin this Halloween and to get creative in the
02:29kitchen and make sure you know more of it ends up on your plate rather than in
02:33landfill. Thank you so much Maisie I'll have to take you up on that especially the
02:36pumpkin latte I'd love that
