00:30France is still cleaning up scenes of devastation
00:33following the worst nationwide protests in years
00:37Buildings were attacked, shops set ablaze
00:40and more than 2,400 people arrested
00:42Our very own Euronews correspondent Estelle Nelson-Julian
00:46and her cameraman were also assaulted and attacked
00:49and will be crossing to Paris for the latest
00:51Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces have struck an oil terminal
00:54a data centre and a bridge in St. Petersburg
00:57in a large-scale drone attack over the weekend
01:00It comes as the European Union
01:02officially advances new negotiation clusters
01:04to bring Ukraine closer to the European Union
01:07alongside the creation of a joint task force
01:10to tackle corruption and rule of law reforms
01:12For The View from Kyiv, we sit down exclusively
01:15with the EU ambassador to Brussels
01:17Katerina Mathernova
01:18Plus, 1,000 aid workers killed in three years
01:23and now new warnings that modern conflict zones
01:25are turning into AI atrocity labs
01:28We speak to UNA chief Tom Fletcher
01:30who warns that with so many cuts to overseas aids
01:33in his sector, more people will die
01:36But first, to Paris
01:37where student-led demonstrations over the cost of living
01:40and school conditions that began weeks ago
01:42have spiralled out of control
01:44with violent groups hijacking the marches this weekend
01:47The mayor of Paris said whole streets have been devastated
01:50cars burnt out and shopfronts destroyed
01:53In the address to the nation last night
01:55the French President Emmanuel Macron
01:56pledged to catch all those responsible for the chaos
02:02Tonight, we all feel anger and shame
02:04Seeing the streets of our cities ransacked like this
02:07is unbearable
02:08Those who have destroyed property must pay
02:10Those who have looted must make restitution
02:13Those who have sought to bring down the Republic
02:15will be held accountable
02:16And just this morning, France's Interior Minister
02:19Laurent Nunez has handed in his resignation
02:21but the French President has refused it for now
02:23For more on the 10th situation, we can go straight to Paris
02:26where your new international correspondent
02:28Valérie Gaurier is standing by for us
02:30Good morning, Valérie
02:32Now, our viewers know you
02:33as often reporting from war zones for Euronews
02:36How does this destruction compare?
02:38And what could the final cost be?
02:42Well, if we compare to wars
02:45we have to keep things into proportions
02:48But it's true that some of the scenes
02:51I've seen over the weekend
02:53are reminiscent of things I've seen in Ukraine
02:57For instance, the destroyed buildings
03:00The burned cars
03:02Buildings like this one behind me
03:04This restaurant that was completely devastated
03:06on a Saturday night
03:08So there is this feeling of desolation
03:12The overturned streets
03:14Things are quite gruesome throughout Paris
03:18Since Saturday
03:20And piles of burned bikes everywhere
03:24So, yes, there is desolation
03:28And people are stunned
03:29by the sights of their city
03:31in this neighbourhood
03:33around the Place de la République, for instance
03:35And now the situation is still tense
03:38As you know, the looting went on last night
03:42I came back to the Place de la République
03:44early afternoon
03:45and was surprised to see
03:46the amount of police
03:48that was deployed there
03:49And they were confronted
03:52and confronting groups of youth
03:54who had gathered on the square again
03:57And it's, you know, continued
04:00with pursuits
04:01and tear-gastry grenades
04:04being thrown
04:05More arrests
04:06So tension is still running high
04:08And President Macron
04:10spoke to the nation last night
04:11Valerie
04:11Has the government regained
04:13control of the situation at all?
04:16Well, the government is far from
04:18having regained control of the situation
04:20We'll see what happens today
04:22But the President was very focused on
04:28being firm towards those
04:30who perpetrated the looting
04:33and the destruction in France
04:36over the weekend
04:37But he was also, you know,
04:40criticized for not saying anything
04:43about the solutions
04:44He would bring the answers
04:48he would give to the demonstrators
04:50as demonstrators
04:51as concerns
04:52as concerns
04:53the cost of life
04:55the high cost of life
04:56or the issues
04:57in education
04:58in health
04:59So people are still
05:00waiting for those answers
05:03He was also blamed
05:05for not saying a word
05:06about the young people
05:08who were wounded
05:08during the protests
05:10There is a crisis cell
05:13that is being
05:14that is being organized
05:16and it starts its meeting
05:18this morning
05:19It will continue
05:20for several days
05:21So the solutions
05:23are yet to be
05:26discussed and revealed
05:28to the wider public
05:29which is getting
05:31quite impatient
05:32Okay, Valérie Gaurier
05:34thank you so much
05:35for that live update
05:36there from Paris
05:37and beyond France
05:38The cost of living
05:39and housing crisis
05:40has been sparking unrest
05:42all across the continent
05:43from Albania
05:44to Portugal
05:45Italy to Spain
05:46thousands have been
05:47taking to the streets
05:48this weekend
05:48declaring that
05:49soaring housing costs
05:51and inflation
05:51have left them suffocating
05:53For more
05:53we can bring in
05:54Professor Alberto Alamano
05:56he's a professor
05:56in EU law
05:57at HEC Paris
05:58Good morning Alberto
05:59thank you so much
06:00for joining us
06:01Just did you see
06:02these protests
06:03coming first
06:03and how long
06:04do you think
06:05they could last?
06:07I would say
06:08Europe's youth protests
06:09are not one movement
06:11at the moment
06:11they reflect
06:12shared anxieties
06:14about job
06:15living costs
06:15in the future
06:16and they are
06:18becoming violent
06:19at least in some
06:20corners of Europe
06:21which is complicating
06:22the ability of the youth
06:23to convey their message
06:25to political leaders
06:26however
06:27treating this protest
06:29as a teenage revolution
06:31or as a pan-European movement
06:32might be inaccurate
06:33and even misleading
06:35by fooling
06:36an image of Europe
06:37that is destroying itself
06:38which is I don't think
06:39is entirely accurate
06:41you're right
06:42in pointing out
06:43that these protests
06:44are spreading
06:45across Europe
06:46but I think
06:48their immediate calls
06:49differ
06:49from one another
06:50and that's why
06:51I don't think
06:52we should treat them
06:52as one phenomenon
06:54we are probably
06:55talking about
06:55different situations
06:57different reasons
06:58that spark this protest
06:59with some imitation
07:00that is occurring
07:02among them
07:02fueled by media coverage
07:04Well how can politicians
07:05catch hold
07:06of the situation
07:07as you've seen in France
07:08the political response
07:09has not been adequate
07:12Well by now
07:13it is pretty clear
07:14that the French protests
07:16have not been foreseen
07:18or treated
07:18with due of care
07:19they were largely anticipated
07:22and yet the police
07:23and the public authority
07:24were not able
07:25to handle
07:26to prevent
07:26and to mitigate disaster
07:28and there is also
07:29evidence suggesting
07:30that there has been
07:31some abuse of power
07:32with many thousands
07:34of arrests
07:35some violence
07:36and accidents
07:37that could have
07:38potentially been foreseen
07:39and that's why
07:40we've been hearing
07:41in the past few hours
07:42quite strong calls
07:45for inquiries
07:46in order to
07:46find out exactly
07:48what went wrong
07:49and to avoid this
07:50to happen in the future
07:51should this protest
07:52continue across countries
07:53in Europe
07:54And have EU heads
07:55of state and government
07:56been too focused
07:57on issues like
07:57defence and security
07:58far away from people's
08:00real life struggles?
08:02Well there are many
08:04instances in which
08:05we've been hearing
08:06students, the youth
08:07and even trade unions
08:09and workers
08:10claiming that there is
08:11something broader
08:11than the school issue here
08:13We see that the capacity
08:15of most countries
08:16to spend
08:17for welfare state
08:19has been reduced
08:20reduced by this
08:22major rush
08:23towards rearmament
08:24of Europe
08:24and this is causing
08:25concern
08:26concerns among
08:27different peoples
08:28of Europe
08:28who feel affected
08:29in particular
08:30the younger ones
08:31because they know
08:31that their future
08:33will be bleak
08:33compared to that
08:34of their own parents
08:35We have a lot of polls
08:36suggesting that more
08:37than half of the youth
08:38in Europe
08:39believe that their future
08:40won't be as right
08:42as that of their parents
08:43And that of course
08:44is a very important message
08:45which has been perhaps
08:46blurred out
08:47because of course
08:47it's the violence
08:48and those images
08:49that are of course
08:50dominating the headlines
08:51this morning
08:51Professor Alberto Almano
08:52thank you so much
08:53for joining us here
08:54Now moving on
08:55Ukraine has reportedly
08:57launched a major
08:57drone attack
08:58on St Petersburg
08:59striking an oil terminal
09:01and targeting a data centre
09:02and a bridge
09:03The attack comes
09:04just one week
09:05after President Donald Trump
09:06announced an energy ceasefire
09:08which has failed
09:09to halt strikes
09:10on energy infrastructure
09:11For more
09:12we're joined now here
09:13in the studio
09:13by our Ukraine correspondent
09:14Sasha Vakilina
09:16Good morning Sasha
09:17Just tell us
09:17what more do we know
09:18about this overnight attack
09:20and what does it mean
09:21for Trump's proposed
09:22energy ceasefire?
09:23Well reportedly
09:24two of the city's
09:25oil facilities
09:25have been struck
09:26by Ukrainian drones
09:27and one of them
09:28indeed is being
09:29St Petersburg oil terminal
09:30It is important to know
09:31that this is indeed
09:32one of the largest
09:33oil terminals
09:34in Russia
09:35Now this attack
09:37over the weekend
09:37seems to put
09:38sort of an official end
09:39to Donald Trump's
09:41unilaterally declared
09:42energy ceasefire
09:43because Kyiv
09:44did pause its strikes
09:45on Russia's
09:47energy facilities
09:47for a couple of days
09:48while Russia
09:49did not do that
09:50and including
09:51this night
09:52now
09:52where ballistic missiles
09:53launched
09:53at Kyiv
09:55and at Ukraine
09:56and Volodymyr Zelenskyy
09:57said that
09:57over just the past
09:58week
09:59Russia deliberately
10:00attacked Ukraine's
10:01energy and oil
10:02and gas sectors
10:0376 times
10:06launching
10:07almost 2,700
10:08attack drones
10:101,7,000
10:12aerial bombs
10:13and 66
10:14missiles made
10:15but that certainly
10:16would not please
10:17Donald Trump
10:18and we've heard
10:19overnight from him
10:19he posted on
10:20Truth Social
10:21and now the post
10:21saying that he is
10:22willing to
10:24put an end
10:25to this war
10:25in his own way
10:26he still believes
10:27in the energy ceasefire
10:28and he actually
10:28said that Russia
10:29and I'm quoting him
10:30here is doing
10:31very little if anything
10:33to help Iran
10:34and instead
10:35he said that Russia
10:35is helping the world
10:37and the United States
10:38when it comes to
10:38diesel
10:39and he again
10:40blamed Ukraine
10:41said that Ukraine
10:42is deliberately
10:43using diesel
10:45refineries
10:45as target
10:46knowing how much
10:46they hurt
10:47the world
10:48diesel market
10:49he also blamed
10:50once again
10:50Volodymyr Zelensky
10:51saying quote
10:52he does not care
10:53and he does not
10:53want to end
10:54this war
10:55Donald Trump said
10:56now I spoke
10:56also exclusively
10:57to the EU's
10:58ambassador to
10:59Kiev
11:00Katarina Matanova
11:01who has a very
11:01different view
11:02on that
11:02because she
11:03actually lives
11:04in Kiev
11:04and lives
11:05through every
11:05single Russian
11:06attack
11:07in Ukraine's
11:07capital
11:09what happened
11:10since the end
11:10of August
11:11of this year
11:12is that
11:13Kiev
11:14became a true
11:15front-line city
11:16and this is
11:19not only
11:20the night-time
11:21attacks
11:21that we are
11:22almost used to
11:23but the
11:24day-time attacks
11:25that started
11:26on the 27th
11:27of August
11:27are relentless
11:29and they
11:30people can't
11:31really imagine
11:32when they're
11:32outside
11:33that when you
11:33have an alert
11:34kids have to
11:35stop studying
11:37go to the
11:37shelter
11:38doctors stop
11:39carrying out
11:40medical procedures
11:41metro stops
11:43with the
11:43intensified attacks
11:44by Russia
11:45since the end
11:46of August
11:46Moscow has
11:47been using
11:47more and more
11:48as well
11:48of jet-powered
11:49drones
11:50which are
11:50much harder
11:51to intercept
11:51and very often
11:52the targets
11:54have nothing
11:54to do
11:54with the
11:54military
11:55I think
11:56this is
11:56quite a
11:57specialty
11:58of Russia
11:59is the
12:00attacks
12:01on civilian
12:01targets
12:02and let's
12:03remind
12:04ourselves
12:04that
12:05attacking
12:06civilian
12:07targets
12:08is a
12:08war crime
12:09it goes
12:10against
12:10the laws
12:11of war
12:11so apart
12:12from
12:13aggressing
12:14peaceful
12:15country
12:15in the
12:16first place
12:16the war
12:18crimes are
12:18happening
12:19on a
12:19daily
12:19basis
12:20there's
12:21also
12:21diplomatic
12:21escalation
12:22happening
12:23these days
12:23between
12:23the United
12:24States
12:24and Ukraine
12:25which is
12:26one of the
12:26important
12:27topics
12:27regarding
12:28how much
12:28more
12:29Europe
12:29can step
12:30in
12:30to help
12:31with
12:32your
12:32experience
12:33first-hand
12:34experience
12:34of living
12:35through all
12:35of that
12:36in Kyiv
12:36what do
12:37you communicate
12:38with your
12:39colleagues
12:39diplomats
12:40and the
12:40European
12:40leaders
12:41here in
12:42Brussels
12:42Europe
12:44has been
12:45and is
12:46proving
12:46itself
12:47to be
12:48really
12:49the
12:49steadfast
12:50the most
12:50reliable
12:51supporter
12:52of Ukraine
12:52both on
12:53the financial
12:54side
12:54and the
12:55military
12:55side
12:55president
12:56was very
12:57clear
12:58that
12:58we are
12:59certainly
13:00not
13:01going
13:01to
13:01release
13:02any
13:03sanctions
13:04on
13:05Russia
13:05until
13:06the war
13:06stops
13:07and
13:08also
13:09you know
13:10right now
13:10the
13:11European
13:12Union
13:12is carrying
13:13about
13:14three quarters
13:14of the
13:15financial
13:16support
13:17for
13:17Ukraine
13:19and I
13:20think there
13:20is determination
13:21to continue
13:22but we
13:22also
13:23will be
13:23talking
13:24to our
13:25like-minded
13:25partners
13:26to step
13:27up their
13:27effort
13:27as well
13:28one of
13:29the aspects
13:29of Europe's
13:30bigger
13:31support
13:32and more
13:32of the
13:32European
13:33Union
13:33stepping
13:33in
13:34also
13:34comes
13:35to
13:35supporting
13:35Ukraine
13:36when it
13:37comes to
13:37Ukraine's
13:37right to
13:38strike
13:38Russia's
13:39oil
13:40facilities
13:40refineries
13:41to target
13:42Russia's
13:42money-making
13:43machine
13:43the one
13:44that is
13:44financing
13:44the war
13:45we have
13:45heard
13:45from

14:01on
14:01that
14:02I

14:07and I
14:08certainly
14:09support
14:10the view
14:10that the
14:11high

14:12expressed
14:13because
14:13it's

14:31is going
14:32down
14:32and as
14:33the EU

14:35from

14:50on the

14:51of

14:52and we
14:53started
14:53by asking
14:53how bad

14:55take a
14:55look
14:56oh it's

15:22it's
15:23terrifying
15:23and remember
15:24you know
15:25these are
15:25people who
15:25wake up
15:26they kiss
15:26their kids
15:26you know

15:45sophisticated
15:46including
15:46I was in
15:46Kherson
15:47just recently
15:47in Ukraine
15:48the drones
15:49being used
15:49there
15:50the AI
15:50drones
15:50that become
15:51more lethal
15:53as they get
15:53to the end
15:54of their
15:54battery life
15:54because they're
15:55programmed
15:55to find a
15:56target
15:56and to
15:56kill it
15:57what role
15:57will AI
15:58play
15:58going forward
15:59as you say
15:59it's already
16:00playing a role
16:00in Ukraine
16:01also in the
16:01war in Iran
16:02we've seen
16:02in these
16:03new weapons
16:03right now
16:04in Sudan
16:05in Somalia
16:05South Sudan
16:06Lebanon

16:17on
16:18with
16:18these
16:18new
16:18weapons
16:18and
16:19it's
16:19becoming
16:20terrifying
16:21because
16:21you're
16:21getting
16:21these
16:22kill
16:22zones
16:23in
16:24which
16:25nothing

16:27meanwhile
16:27that's
16:27happening
16:28on the

18:19through
18:19and
18:20just
18:20finally
18:20we're
18:21coming
18:21well it's already one year
18:22since the ceasefire in Gaza
18:24coming into the winter
18:25what does the situation look like there
18:26it's grim
18:27and
18:28you know
18:29a year on from the ceasefire
18:30we have managed to get the hunger levels down
18:32so about half the number
18:33of people who were reporting going to bed hungry
18:35a year ago
18:36are saying they're still going to bed hungry
18:38but that's still almost half the population
18:40going to bed
18:41hungry
18:41you know
18:42we're being blocked from bringing in the shelter materials
18:44for the winter
18:45the
18:46the tents that people need
18:48we're being blocked
18:49from all the work we need to do
18:51to clear the rubble in Gaza
18:52under which people's loved ones are still buried
18:55so they can start to rebuild their homes and their lives
18:58so some things are improving
18:59we've got 100,000 kids back into school
19:02but those kids should never have been
19:04out of school
19:04and now we're facing into a really really rough winter
