Episode Description:
Nearly all of Korea’s crypto leaders want the January coin tax postponed, warning of an exodus to offshore exchanges.
In a Seoul Economic Daily survey of 30 digital asset executives and academics, 93.4% (28 respondents) supported delaying the crypto tax scheduled for January, and 96.4% of them want it pushed to 2029 or later, when the United States joins the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework. 83.4% expect trading at domestic exchanges to fall 10% or more after the tax takes effect, including 56.7% who foresee a drop of 30% or more, while only two respondents (6.6%) believe the tax agency can accurately track offshore and private-wallet trades. Under current rules, crypto gains above a 2.5 million won (about $1,900) annual deduction are taxed at 22%, and 70% of respondents want the deduction raised to at least 50 million won (about $37,600). We also look at the revival of gold banking, with holdings at KB Kookmin, Shinhan and Woori banks rising to 9,184 kg as of October 14.
