00:00Could a handful of pistachios help you sleep? A new review looked at the science,
00:04and the answer is not as simple as the hype. The review, in the journal Nutrition Research
00:09Reviews, was led by researchers, including Marie-Pierre St. Ange of Columbia University
00:14Irving Medical Center. It found that a one-ounce serving of pistachios has about 71 milligrams of
00:21tryptophan, an amino acid the body uses to make sleep-related chemicals. Pistachios also contain
00:27plant melatonin. But the amount ranges widely, from under 0.1 micrograms to almost 19 micrograms
00:33per serving. That matters, because the best melatonin dose for sleep is still unclear.
00:39Now the catch? This is a narrative review, not a clinical trial. It was partly funded by the
00:45American Pistachio Growers and the National Institutes of Health. Randomized trials are
00:50still needed. One outside expert said the evidence does not yet justify recommending pistachios for
00:55insomnia. And eating them is not the same as taking melatonin. If sleep is a problem,
