During the free practice sessions for the 1990 San Marino Grand Prix at the Imola circuit, Alessandro Nannini was involved in a violent accident while at the wheel of his Benetton B190. The incident occurred at the Tamburello corner, following a misunderstanding—or contact—during an overtaking maneuver involving Andrea De Cesaris (driving a Dallara). Nannini spun and crashed heavily into the barriers, but he emerged unscathed. Despite the scare on Friday, Nannini went on to compete throughout the race weekend, ultimately securing a 3rd-place podium finish in a Grand Prix won by Riccardo Patrese.
