00:00Il Tre Cime di Lavaredo
00:03Three spectacular peaks in the Italian Dolomites
00:06Near the resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo
00:08The only way to the refuge of the summit
00:10Is a steep and narrow mountain road
00:12A climb to challenge even the most famous sports car in the world
00:35The F40 Berlinetta
00:37The fastest production car ever built by Ferrari
00:40Driving it, Ferrari world champion racing driver John Surtees
00:44The only man to win a world title on two wheels and on four
01:08The Ferrari F40 can accelerate to more than 200 miles an hour
01:12And it runs on the fastest road car tyre in the world
01:15The Pirelli P0
01:17Car and tyre are products of racing experience
01:21Both use materials and technology derived from success in Formula One
01:26They're partners in high performance
01:56The Pirelli P0
01:58John Surtees, world champion racing driver, engineer, designer, tester and team manager.
02:05There's not much this British ace doesn't know about motorcars.
02:10It has a degree of comfort at the same time, a firmness and a tauntness and a message that it
02:16gives you, which is very much a race car.
02:28It is in fact a car which can give an immense amount of pleasure because you can relate to it.
02:34And this is what a racing driver has to do to get the best from his car. He has to
02:39relate to it and become part of it.
02:44With John Surtees in the cockpit, the Ferrari F40 covered the four-mile sprint to the top of the Trecime
02:50in four minutes, all of it tight hairpins uphill.
02:53The driving force, a light alloy V8 engine with two turbochargers, producing a maximum of 478 brake horsepower.
03:29So now that I don't know how to move, you know, pretty much a bullard.
03:55La F40 not only celebrates Ferrari's 40 years as a car manufacturer,
04:00it embodies many of the technical achievements behind the company's 5,000 sporting victories on road and track.
04:07Some of those Ferrari triumphs at Monza, Spa and the Nürburgring
04:10were due to the determination and skill of John Surtees, or Big John, as he's often called in Italy.
04:17There they remember all his world championship wins.
04:20Whether on a big red MV Agusta, or behind the wheel of a big red Ferrari.
04:32Lots of companies have said that motor racing doesn't count.
04:36But that has been disproved so many times.
04:39Motor racing not only creates the right end product,
04:42but it creates the right end product because what it does, it creates the right team.
04:47It puts a team of engineers and research persons in the companies concerned.
04:54They're able to pass this knowledge on and their experience to the public.
04:58And so, from my point of view, whether it's a car manufacturer or an accessory manufacturer,
05:04motorsport is a very vital factor in the continuous development of the automobile.
05:09Until my point of view of the automobile,
05:10BMW and Henry were a through-
05:12I'm, I'm that way like that.
05:39But on technologies,
05:39We really know a year ago,
06:05typical Ferrari fashion, yes, con new technology and new techniques involved, but very much
06:12a car created by human beings, and very much Ferrari type human beings.
06:20Handcraftsmanship and the human touch are evident everywhere on the F40 assembly line at Maranello.
06:25Ferrari and Pirelli developed a close working relationship on the F40 project. Both were
06:30interested in a new kind of high performance supercar directly related to Grand Prix racing,
06:36with low weight and a lot of horsepower driving the two rear wheels.
06:40One result was the wide dimension Pirelli P0 radial tire.
06:48Computer-aided design played a large part in the creation of P0.
06:52One example is this Abacus computer system at the Pirelli headquarters in Milan,
06:57which is used among other things for testing tire distortion when under stress in cornering.
07:06P0 development by Ferrari and Pirelli engineers and technicians went hand in hand with circuit testing
07:12at Ferrari's Fiorano track and at Pirelli's outdoor test laboratory at Vizzola Ticino.
07:24Lasers have their role to play too. The laser beams can detect interior weaknesses in the wall
07:28of a tire, which are invisible to the human eye. On top of this high-tech scrutiny, P0 was run
07:35at
07:35speeds up to 220 miles an hour on indoor test rigs at Pirelli to verify its potential.
07:42Then P0 tests were run on this tire temperature apparatus, the only one of its kind in the world,
07:47made in West Germany to Pirelli specification. The equipment can reproduce everything that happens
07:52to a tire on road or track, and it measures the surface temperatures of the tire at every stage.
07:58These can vary from 30 to 95 degrees centigrade, and they register as color photographs,
08:03in blue for the lower, and in red for the higher temperatures. So engineers can identify how much heat
08:09is generated by contact with the road, and exactly where it's most intense. A new technology for the
08:16supercar tires of the 1990s.
08:43In terms of advanced technology, the Ferrari F40 sets the standard by which it is
08:48which all other high-performance cars need to be judged. And according to world champion racing
08:53driver John Sirteens, this applies to its tires too.
08:58What has been achieved is this tremendous relationship in achieving a nice balanced frequency
09:04between the way the tire operates, the suspension operates, together with obviously the overall
09:10construction of the car, its rigidness and its downforce. And this is very much a
09:18a product of the racetrack. If I had to say a single feature that is developed in the period since
09:26when I was racing through to now, I would say that the greatest advancement has been in two areas,
09:32obviously aerodynamics, but certainly not far behind tire development. And tire development which is
09:39fortunately also feeding itself back through to the public, and is demonstrated by this vehicle and its product.
09:48So
10:02we'll see you next time.
10:03We'll see you next time.
10:04Grazie a tutti.
