America’s literacy crisis isn’t accidental — it’s the result of a deliberate playbook that has treated reading as a gatekeeper of power. This documentary reveals how, particularly in the African American community, literacy has been denied and reclaimed as a tool of liberation — and why dismantling those barriers is the frontline of equity today.

00:09My dad wanted to add on to our house.
00:12My father was not an educated person.
00:16He had a third grade education.
00:18He wanted a bank loan.
00:20And so he had me read that to him.
00:30There is applying for a loan.
00:33Applying to take courses.
00:36Getting your driver's license.
00:38But even beyond that, there's so many things that, you know,
00:42how do I then apply for a job?
00:43Then what's the job application look like?

01:53but let's be real.
01:55They benefit by having us not to be a illiterate population.
02:01You know, we need to have a thorough exploration of our history and truth-telling of our history
02:12in order for us to create any kind of resolutions.
02:17Only by being able to understand what people were thinking and feeling in previous years
02:25are we able to kind of understand and synthesize that into how things are today.
02:32And then we become aware of it and then it becomes a decision for ourselves how we're going to choose
02:39to, you know, be a part of that.
