00:31Doha Film Institute started Geekdom in 2013.
00:35The organizers later added Geekend, a smaller event held more often.
00:40This time there's a bigger focus on art, with artists showing and selling their work.
00:45I've seen so many people meet at Geekdom and work on future projects between artists, writers, animators.
00:51When they come together and they see their talent, that's what develops into actually viable businesses and products
00:57that we see when it comes to animation, video game development, board game development.
01:11Cosplay means dressing as a favorite fictional character.
01:15Some fans make their own costumes, while others buy them ready-made.
01:20And I think it's really cool so far because, like, there's a lot of people who know, like, this yarn.
01:26Today I'm wearing gold chip print, and I like her because she's very silly, very spontaneous, like me.
01:35And who helped me get the outfit is my grandmother in the States, so she was very helpful to me.
01:41This is our first time here so far, it's a really nice event, and I think that we would come
01:46again.
01:55Majlis Shabaab runs the board game area.
01:58The Qatari company makes its own games and produces Arabic versions of others.
02:06This is Dama, a traditional board game that Majlis Shabaab has given a new look.
02:11I'm playing against the company's founder, Abdurrahman Al-Humayyid.
02:16Abdurrahman, why did you decide to come up with your own version of this game?
02:19Qatari people used to play this on the sand, using stones.
02:23And then by the time, they used these wooden pieces, and they look like this.
02:28Additionally, we added one element to the Dama, where your Dama piece, if it becomes the Shaykh, we add Ugal
02:37on top of it.
02:39The ring represents the Ugal, the cord worn around the traditional hairdress.
02:44The company also makes Recruit Madness, where players compete to get their chosen candidates hired.
02:51So Recruit Madness, basically, you are in a fictional city called Sindam,
02:56and you are a member of a recruitment authority.
03:01Every player is competing against each other to become the next president of this recruitment authority
03:05by hiring the right people to the right vacancies.
03:10We have other original games, such as Mudir Kabir, Big Boss, Enchid Ghul, Radar, and so on.
03:17One of the reasons that we make board games is we want people to gather on one table.
03:22It is also valuable to play against each other or with each other on a table on one place instead
03:29of different places or online.
03:35Japanese anime is a big influence here, including on what people choose to wear.
03:41I have so many costumes that I do with my hand, but for this one especially, I bought it.
03:46But of course, my hair is not dyed. It's a wig.
03:48At the Japanese embassy's booth, the team are kept busy helping visitors try on kimonos.
03:56Most of the Japanese animes and games are based on the Japanese culture and philosophies.
04:03Sharing those culture and philosophy, we are sure that people can enjoy anime and games more and more, better and
04:11better.
04:13Khalif Al-Haroon runs gaming retailer Store 974.
04:17For him, the appeal is getting people together in the same room.
04:22So beyond the gaming, I really love to see all these artists that are creating all their little merch pieces,
04:27whether it's posters or medallions or little print kits.
04:31So these type of events are critical to making people feel welcome and to let people know you're not alone
04:38in your hobby.
04:39And that's to help them grow the scene.
04:40Everyone here has a favorite game or comic.
04:44Ask them to agree on the best one though.
04:48And we could be here all night.
