Charles Jackman, an underground overlord seeking redemption, is struck by lightning and transported to an ancient, famine-stricken village. Here, he inhabits the body of a dead rascal who had been struck by lightning after stealing grain. With a "divination tortoiseshell" from an old monk, Charles can foresee daily fortunes and disasters, locate prey, predict crises, and identify allies.
