00:05For you who are slaves with me, it means that we're no longer slaves.
00:10It means a chance to fight for your native land.
00:14And the loot you'll find on the French ships.
00:19Are you willing to fight men?
00:22Captain Blood made an instant star out of Errol Flynn.
00:26There has never been anyone where the word swashbuckler was made for than Errol Flynn.
00:33So they tested a whole bunch of different actors to play Captain Blood.
00:38Frederick March turned it down.
00:40Ronald Coleman turned it down.
00:42So Flynn got cast in the role.
00:44He was also cast opposite the 19-year-old Olivia de Havilland.
00:48That is your Captain Blood.
00:50Captain Blood?
00:51The film elevated the career of Michael Curtiz,
00:54because Michael Curtiz came to Warner Brothers as a director of spectacles.
00:59So this became a spectacular movie.
01:02A lot of extras and battle scenes.
01:04So he was very eager to do this.
01:07Michael Curtiz was a very artistic man,
01:10and he was never satisfied until he was satisfied.
01:13However, Curtiz at that point still thought that actors were marionettes controlled by him.
01:21And his way of getting a good performance out of Flynn was to berate him.
01:27In the name of humanity, I've been too soft with you, but that shall be mended.
01:32What Flynn did is he seethed under that treatment,
01:36and this all started with Captain Blood.
01:38In 1941, after they made Dive Bomber, Flynn actually attacked Michael Curtiz.
01:45We're giving you the chance to cool off some of that excessive heat of yours.
01:48I will die for them, men!
01:52You could learn a lesson in gratitude.
01:55You're a very humble slave, Miss Bishop.
01:57In the end, Michael Curtiz appreciated Errol Flynn.
02:03They made 12 movies together, and he knew what Errol Flynn did for his career.
02:09And at one point, Errol gestured toward Curtiz and said,
02:13Well, there's my whole career there.
02:15And Mike treated him wonderfully.
02:18And he said,
02:20Actor's Studio can make actor.
02:22Only God makes star.
02:30And I'll see you next time.
