00:00Some Lahena wildfire rebuilding projects can now follow a different permit process without the usual public hearing.
00:07Maui County introduced the change to support recovery from the 2023 wildfires.
00:12The new process took effect on October 7, 2026.
00:16It allows the planning director to review certain permits instead of sending them to the Maui Planning Commission.
00:22But strict eligibility rules still apply.
00:24Rebuilt single-family homes must have less than 3,500 square feet of floor space.
00:30Other projects must meet specific shoreline and reconstruction criteria.
00:34Being seaward of Front Street does not automatically qualify a property.
00:39Shoreline setbacks, environmental rules, and historic preservation protections remain in place.
00:45Officials can also require further studies or refer projects for additional review.
00:49And administrative decisions can still be appealed.
00:52The goal is to help eligible Lahena families and businesses rebuild while protecting the coastline and cultural resources.
00:59Disclosure.
