This is our in-depth reveal review of the BMW M5 Touring. We're taking a look at Exterior, Interior and technology.
Transcript
00:00This is here the all-new BMW M5 Touring.
00:04It's not the very first M5 Touring,
00:06but it has been gone for years.
00:08And with this new generation, it is back.
00:11Recently showing you the M5 Sedan.
00:14Now it's about the big performance estate at BMW
00:18with Thomas Nautengefuhr in 4K, full screen, full length.
00:22Let's go.
00:23Hey, before I say, I'm in the Northern American market anyway,
00:26and we never get the two rings at BMW.
00:29Wait just a minute because the M5 Touring
00:32will also be available for the Northern American market.
00:36That's a kind of like a very special thing
00:38that by this, you can also get the two rings.
00:41So if you argue at home, like, which version do we get?
00:44Yeah, we have to get the M5 because that's also available as two rings.
00:47Starting with the front, illuminated double kidney right here.
00:51It's pretty cool.
00:52It's also on while driving.
00:53And then here, really large holes opening the cooling opening.
00:57They're not adaptive because this engine here needs actually more cooling
01:02than the standard versions.
01:03And then here, frozen deep gray is the color.
01:06So it's a matte color.
01:09You also hear that, that you feel it.
01:11Pretty cool.
01:12Headlamps, standard adaptive LED.
01:15Also here with these blue situations on the inside, but darkened at the side.
01:19And overall, black or dark chrome is the scheme here of the M5 Touring.
01:24Wheels, 20 inch in the front, 21 inch in the rear.
01:28So mixed wheels, optional carbon ceramic brakes.
01:31They are also mounted right here.
01:33And this is also equipped with all black wheels for the most sinister look.
01:38And from the, yeah, Leah likes that.
01:41I know.
01:41Here from the engine concept, you can already see right here.
01:45This will be a plug-in hybrid.
01:47Zoom out to the engine concept.
01:48If you haven't heard about that so far, length is 5 meters and 10 or 201 inches.
01:54And here, this typical estate styling.
01:56Once again, here also all the way blacked out.
01:59And you also have this spoiler.
02:01And here, this enlargement is also for the aerodynamics and so on.
02:05You get a rear axle steering as standard.
02:08Up to 1.5 degrees in the opposite or in the parallel direction.
02:12And also adaptive suspension.
02:14So it switches according to the driving mode.
02:17And then you can see here, the tail lamps are nicely integrated.
02:20Also begin already at the side.
02:22And then the Touring here in this generation has not anymore this separate glass roof.
02:29So this is just a normal hatch.
02:31Has been criticized by previous owners.
02:34However, the M5 then has these really large diffuser styling in the lower part and real
02:39exhaust pipes for one, two, and the other two at the other side.
02:44There we go.
02:45And then let's directly open this one.
02:47And you lose a little bit of leader figures because of the plug-in hybrid system.
02:52So it's only 500 liters here.
02:55Yeah.
02:56But you see, you can still very well live with that.
02:59And I'll show you why.
03:00First of all, here, this top part, this cover, is not electric anymore in this generation.
03:04It's manual.
03:05However, when you open the hatch, then it goes like this.
03:08So you can easily load things in and out.
03:11And then I'll also make you some light right here.
03:13You can better see the trunk.
03:14There we go.
03:15So the good thing is, it's a very big advantage in comparison to this sedan.
03:19Here it's like almost 115 meters in width.
03:22So that's like 44 inches.
03:25And the length is indeed also one, you know, like, not quite.
03:29It's like one meters and five or 42 inches.
03:32And the height here, this is, of course, another example.
03:36How good is it?
03:3870 centimeters or like 27 inches.
03:40So definitely way more versatile here with the estate.
03:44So you can combine performance estate or performance with estate driving.
03:48There we go.
03:49We can also fold the seats.
03:51It also folds relatively flat.
03:53That's actually a very good thing.
03:55And also this top cover here, you just press it here.
03:59And you press it on the other side as well.
04:01And then it's easily demounted like this.
04:04And you can take it out or just pull it into place for an easy solution and underneath,
04:09you have a little bit more space like that.
04:16The hood, you just pull it twice like that.
04:20And it's very interesting now because under the hood, we have a 4.4 liter V8 twin turbo one
04:27and two.
04:28The system output is 727 horsepower just from the ICE.
04:32The combustion engine is 585 horsepower.
04:36The acceleration figure here is 3.6 seconds to 1 kilometers an hour or 62 miles an hour.
04:413.5 it would be with the sedan.
04:43So this is a little bit slower because overall, there's another like 40 kilograms extra in weight
04:48because of the two ring styling.
04:50Yeah, but I think it won't make the biggest difference.
04:53The hybrid drive system is also a little bit slower than if you not have the hybrid from
04:58standstill.
04:58However, then on the higher speed levels, it can give you an extra boost.
05:03Of course, the weight goes up overall with the battery to around two and a half tons.
05:08The battery size is 19 kilowatt hours net.
05:10That means the pure electric driving can end up like 60 kilometers or 30 miles, something
05:15like that.
05:15So you can also use it pure electric, maybe in the neighborhood and so on, and then floor
05:21it out, for example, on the German Autobahn.
05:24Yeah.
05:24Tell me what you think about this approach right here.
05:2711 kilowatt charging.
05:28So it is a well usable plug-in hybrid.
05:31The same battery size then with the non-M model, but of course in here, it has great performance.
05:37How does it work with the all-wheel drive?
05:39You still have a rear wheel bias.
05:41There's also a rear differential.
05:43And no matter if you drive electric or with combustion engine or both combined, it will be
05:48always the same all-wheel drive setup.
05:50And in these settings on the interior, you can also go for a two-wheel drive only mode.
05:55So for a rear wheel drive only, if you still want to make some donuts or something with you,
06:00with your M5 touring.
06:02Car key like this, high-gloss black, M colors.
06:05Also flush door handles and door closing sound.
06:09It's really nice.
06:10However, it's a little bit high pitch, I would say, but in a retro style.
06:14And the rear sounds actually more low pitch.
06:18That's very interesting, isn't it?
06:20Then, insert of the doors, ambient lighting integration.
06:23That's cool.
06:24Oh, yeah.
06:24And then you have a unique color for the interior with the red here.
06:27Soft touch on the top part.
06:28Just no felt covering on the insert of the door pockets.
06:32Exclusive, however, entry badges.
06:34The normal 5 Series does not have that.
06:36The M version does get it.
06:38It also receives the new M steering wheel with a flat bottom.
06:41And special, you have these M1 and M2 buttons where you can individualize your M driving settings
06:47for that one.
06:49Yeah, the red color for the animal skin seats here is something special.
06:54You have to like that, I have to say.
06:56These sports seats have more shoulder accentuation.
06:58And although they have great alternative materials at BMW,
07:02the best out there on the market.
07:04So animal free, more sustainable and also actually better.
07:07They stay cooler and are also softer and more comfortable.
07:10For the M models, so far, they use animal skin only.
07:13They will change it at some point, but not yet.
07:16They are late to the game at the M department there.
07:20Overall, the thing is that in the top part, you have like a lot of support.
07:24And it is a seat that feels like you have a lumbar support already
07:28when the lumbar support is not set in.
07:31You have to, you know, be aware of that just.
07:33Then headroom here.
07:34This is the one with the panoramic roof.
07:37Then with 189 or 602, there's still some headroom left.
07:40Not too much.
07:40You could also get just a pure fixed roof.
07:44What is not available is the carbon fiber roof.
07:48That is only available with the sedan.
07:50And if you have this panoramic roof here,
07:53you can apply a shade for really hot days.
07:56It's just that you cannot open it completely, you know,
07:59like not in leaving fresh air in.
08:02I also like here the ambient lighting in the cockpit
08:04because here in the middle part, you also have the M colors.
08:08And this is here demo mode where you can see the speed
08:11and also the RPMs turned up.
08:12This is like driver POV.
08:14Very important here for an M vehicle.
08:16Still real buttons at the steering wheel,
08:18at least mix.
08:19And of course, these real M buttons.
08:20And also here these large shifting pedals.
08:23They are actually quite cool.
08:24And this here, this dual screen,
08:26like one screen there, another one there.
08:28And there's this curved frame around.
08:30And this is here the special M setup
08:32where you can individualize your settings
08:34and then save it also, for example, to the M1
08:37or to the M2 button.
08:39That's actually quite cool.
08:40And then here the climate unit is in the infotainment.
08:44Like here, seat cooling, seat heating, and so on.
08:46I do prefer physical buttons.
08:48Yeah, that's the way it is.
08:49It's like in this generation.
08:53And then here, this is how you got to the setup.
08:56This would be DSC settings.
08:58This is here hybrid settings.
09:00So for example, there you can go for EV driving only
09:04or hybrid or dynamic plus
09:06if you want to get most out of this system.
09:09And then you also have some recuperation,
09:12of course, still even when the battery is depleted.
09:14And then M mode.
09:16This is then here for the settings
09:19of the assistance systems
09:21that you can also almost completely turn them off.
09:24And here in the front,
09:25you have inductive charging pad
09:26only on the left side.
09:28And it's also cooled.
09:28And the cup holders are also illuminated and adaptive.
09:32And I really like that you can also still control it here.
09:35Nice turning sound.
09:37Also when you click it.
09:39So this is possible.
09:40And also here, a physical interface
09:42for the volume right there.
09:44The side here, towards Leah's side.
09:47Hello.
09:49What about the glove box?
09:50Maybe you can show...
09:51Is it...
09:52There it is.
09:55Also dampened, I think.
09:56Yeah, as it's supposed to be with BMW.
09:59Nice closing sound.
10:00And here, the middle console.
10:02Split opening.
10:03More space underneath.
10:05There we go.
10:0512-foot power supply.
10:07So what did you...
10:08Would you take the Touring or the sedan?
10:10The Touring.
10:11Touring.
10:12So she's a Touring girl.
10:14And you also get this head-up display.
10:16Also in a special M design.
10:18Rear doors.
10:19Top part is soft touch.
10:21And also here, a standard Bowson Wilken system
10:23for the M5.
10:24Also nice illumination at the inside of the doors.
10:27This is just hard pick once again.
10:29And then legroom-wise.
10:30There's not so much legroom left,
10:32although it's a very long car.
10:34When you're, you know, my size
10:35and you're also driving like this.
10:37The back part of the seat here, by the way,
10:38is also pretty hard overall.
10:40I like the climate unit,
10:42although this one is not physical.
10:44At least, it looks cool
10:46for the rear passengers.
10:47USB-C charging is included there as well.
10:51And then the seating comfort itself is...
10:54That's getting loud now, right?
10:56It's interesting.
10:57So when I activate it in the front and in the rear,
10:59it also gets activated in the front.
11:01Then, yeah.
11:01Okay.
11:02Can I turn it off again?
11:03Oh, it's like blown away.
11:06Headroom here.
11:07So with 189, still some left.
11:10But here, this panoramic roof,
11:12yeah, it does cause you some headroom.
11:14And if you have a sedan, for example,
11:16without like a panoramic roof,
11:19like with a fixed roof,
11:20it's more or less the same,
11:22although the two-ring continues right here.
11:24So I think the most headroom should be
11:26the two-ring with a fixed roof, actually.
11:29The seats themselves here,
11:31let's see if we can adjust them somehow
11:33in the angle.
11:34Let's see.
11:36No, actually not.
11:37So it's either like this,
11:38it's loose for folding,
11:40or like this,
11:41and then it's fixed.
11:42And that's it.
11:43Here, there's some cup holders,
11:45adaptive,
11:45and you can also use this ski hatch.
11:48Yeah, but at least loading through
11:50in the trunk volume and so on
11:51is still quite good.
11:53So the sedan definitely,
11:55especially in combination with the hybrid drive system,
11:58has more limitations in the trunk,
11:59I feel, than the estate one has here.
12:03So next to the missing electric cover here,
12:07and also this separate glass roof,
12:09which is not there anymore.
12:10Here, the material at the inside part here
12:13is a little bit cheap,
12:14considering that price here.
12:16So this also needs to be topped up in the game,
12:19I feel.
12:19However, what you can do with the M5 Touring
12:22is use the towing capacity,
12:24not with this very vehicle here,
12:26but you can optionally get the towing hook,
12:28and then you can pull up to two tons.
12:30And the diffuser here would look a little bit different
12:32than because of the geometry,
12:34because you need to apply the towing hook then there.
12:36Yeah, maybe at some point,
12:38maybe at the driving event or so on,
12:40we can also catch one with the towing hook,
12:42and then show it to you.
12:43If you decide between the sedan and the Touring,
12:45there's a tough pill to swallow.
12:492,000 euros extra if you pick the Touring
12:51in comparison to the sedan.
12:53If that plays a role in that price segment,
12:56because it starts at 146,000 euros,
12:59as a German reference price,
13:01the US dollar prices will be rather like
13:04120,000 something US dollars without VAT.
13:08And though here in Germany, we already give
13:10always the included VAT prices.
13:13That's why the US price always look way cheaper
13:16than they are in Germany, actually.
13:18Yeah, but then overall, of course,
13:20what also might play a role,
13:22depending on the taxation rules in Germany,
13:25for example, the monthly taxation,
13:27when you have this one as a company car,
13:29will be way lower than if it would be
13:31a non-hybrid version.
13:33So there are always pros and cons here
13:35with the new hybrid drivetrain concept and so on.
13:39Also with this one, increased weight, yes.
13:42Yet again, in some parts, you have more performance.
13:45You can drive all electric.
13:47Yeah, and also taxation will be lower
13:49for all these company cars.
13:51What do you think about the concept?
13:52And would you go for a Touring
13:54or rather for the M5 sedan?
13:56You can check it out right there.
13:58And competitors, of course, are the Mercedes E53.
14:02It's also made of both sedan and as the estate.
14:04those are the various offerings around the country.
14:04are ancient buildings
