00:00It wasn't until after Kid A, I remember quietly saying to Nigel,
00:05I've got all these things and I just want to do them on my own.
00:08It doesn't make sense to try and include anybody else, you know.
00:12Up until that point, it was just a really alien concept.
00:17We've known each other a mind-boggling number of years now.
00:20We all know each other's musical strengths and musical weaknesses.
00:25So you're spending a lot of the time working around that.
00:29I mean, we haven't worked, we haven't been in the studio together for a long time,
00:33so I don't know how it would actually feel now.
00:35The upside of that is like you get this sort of,
00:38it has to go through all these different filters and all these different perspectives
00:42and all these different kind of tastes and because of that, it strengthens it.
00:47Because the point is that whatever the idea is, if it survives all this,
00:51it becomes like so much bigger than the sum of its parts.
00:55When you work on your own, it's much harder to get that.
00:59It's also like the relationships you develop with the people you work with
01:03and you write with are weird relationships because they're,
01:09sometimes this person contributes, sometimes this person contributes,
01:13sometimes it's what happens in the studio and Nigel's like making shit happen.
01:18And you know, it's all these different things.
01:21I don't know how to answer that.
01:22I know that when I work on my own, it's quick because it's just me.
01:29I mean, with the smile again, it's totally different.
01:31Because Johnny just generates ideas all the time.
01:35Skinner works faster than any human being I've ever met
01:38and can respond to literally, as you probably know, anything you throw at him.
01:43And I'm in the middle of going, all right, well, why don't you guys record this?
01:47Because I don't understand what's going on and I'll go away and think about it.
01:50Or, you know, I'll try to get in the middle of it and I don't know what's happening.
01:53You know, I'm like lost.
01:54My favourite experiences in the studio, I like when someone's playing something that's good
02:00and I don't understand why it's good and I pick up a mic and respond to it
02:03and then I will listen back to it, like you say, like I'm trying to explain about, like, despite yourself.
02:09I have no idea who that was or, is that us? Yeah, that's us. That thing.
02:13I'm talking about excitement.
02:14I love it.
