00:01Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at the most painful, gruesome,
00:06and brutal ways ruling regimes throughout history have put people to death.
00:11The brazen bull is essentially just a pressure cooker.
00:15Mclantlacutli's Sacrifice
00:17Deep within Aztec religious rituals, sacrificial victims met a bloody end dedicated to Mclantlacutli,
00:24god of the underworld. Bound over a curved stone slab to stretch the chest,
00:28the victim remained fully conscious as a high priest used a razor-sharp obsidian blade
00:33to slice open the torso. With terrifying speed, the priest ripped out the still-beating heart to
00:39offer to the gods. To top off the horror, the lifeless body was hurled down the steep temple
00:44steps, leaving the crowd below to process the gore. It was a gruesome spectacle,
00:49designed as much for psychological control as it was for spiritual duty.
00:53Upright Jerker
00:54Designed in the late 19th century as a humane alternative to traditional hanging,
01:00the upright jerker was anything but. Instead of dropping the prisoner down through a trap door,
01:05this bizarre contraption used a heavy system of weights and pulleys to jerk the victim violently
01:10upward into the air. The sudden explosive force was intended to snap the neck instantly,
01:15but mechanically, it often failed. Victims were frequently left strangling in mid-air,
01:20thrashing helplessly as the machine pulled tight. It was a disastrous attempt at modernizing capital
01:26punishment that only added a chaotic mechanical horror to the condemned person's final agonizing
01:32moments. Poena Cule. It's also known as the penalty of the sack in Latin, a severe form of
01:38execution in ancient Rome reserved almost exclusively for parricide, the crime of murdering a parent or
01:44close relative. After being severely flogged, the convicted criminal was sewn into a heavy leather
01:50sack. Over time, Roman law mandated that four live animals be enclosed inside the sack alongside the
01:57perpetrator – a dog, a rooster, a viper, and a monkey. Once sealed, the sack was transported to a
02:03nearby body of water and cast in to drown the occupant. Beyond physical death, the ritual held deep
02:09religious significance. It deliberately denied the convict contact with essential elements like land
02:15and air, depriving them of traditional burial and socially erasing them from society. Poisoning
02:21with slow-acting toxins. Execution by poison strips away all human agency, masking profound
02:27internal agony behind a deceptively still facade. What you do not smell is called iocaine powder.
02:33It is odorless, tasteless, dissolves instantly in liquid, and is among the more deadly poisons known to man.
02:38While observers see a quiet passing, the victim often endures horror in silence.
02:43As paralytic agents take effect, muscle function collapses, trapping a fully conscious mind inside
02:49an immobile shell. The terrifying realization sets in that breathing has stopped, yet the body cannot
02:55gasp for air or signal its distress. Panic mounts as suffocation sets in, accompanied by severe internal
03:01burning and chest pressure as cardiac arrest begins. The absolute horrors stem from this stark contrast,
03:07an intense suffocating terror raging internally, while the dying person remains utterly powerless
03:13to utter a single sound or move a muscle. I'd hate to die like your son, clawing at my neck,
03:20foam and bile spilling from my mouth, eyes blood red, skin purple. Crucifixion. Crucifixion was an
03:28ancient, highly public form of capital punishment designed to maximize pain, humiliation, and terror.
03:34Sometimes it is better to answer injustice with mercy. I will answer injustice with justice.
03:42Practiced extensively by the Romans, Persians, and Seleucids, it targeted rebels, slaves, and
03:48severe criminals. Victims were typically beaten, forced to carry the crossbeam, batibulum, and then
03:54attached to a wooden cross using heavy iron nails driven through their wrists and feet, or bound tightly
04:00with thick ropes. Death resulted not from immediate blood loss, but from a prolonged process of
04:06asphyxiation, dehydration, exhaustion, and circulatory shock lasting hours or even days. Beyond execution,
04:13crucifixion served as a deliberate psychological deterrent, exposing the condemned naked to public
04:19mockery and denying them a proper burial.
04:25Decapitation via sword or axe. Decapitation inflicts a unique horror through the violent,
04:31instantaneous destruction of human bodily integrity.
04:34So long as I am your king, treason shall never go unpunished. Sir Illyn, bring me his head.
04:44The victim experiences a visceral, overwhelming dread during the final moments of restraint,
04:49hearing the swift movement of the blade, just before impact. The immediate shock of the blow
04:54severs all motor control and systemic functions instantly, yet scientific evidence suggests brief
05:00moments of residual cerebral awareness may persist. In those terrifying seconds, a severed head might
05:06process sensory information. The disorienting spin, the sudden loss of breath, and the horrific
05:11sight of its own headless torso, before oxygen deprivation finally extinguishes consciousness.
05:16Tomorrow you will have your heads cut off.
05:19The ultimate horror lies in that fleeting helpless interval where the mind registers its own total
05:25physical dismemberment. Hanging, drawing, and quartering
05:28Reserved for high treason in medieval England, this multi-step execution was a horrific art form.
05:34Now behold the awful prize of treason!
05:37First the convict was drawn, dragged on a wooden hurdle to the gallows. Next came a brief hanging,
05:43stopped just before death. While still conscious, the victim was disemboweled. Their entrails pulled
05:48out and burned before their eyes, and often castrated. Finally, the body was beheaded and
05:53chopped into four pieces, quartered, to be displayed across the kingdom. It was a calculated,
05:59methodological annihilation of the human body, designed to crush any thought of rebellion.
06:03His head was set on London Bridge. His arms and legs sent to the four corners of Britain as a
06:14warning.
06:15Crocodile Pit Execution Combining capital punishment with predators,
06:20crocodile pit executions turned nature into the ultimate executioner. Used by ancient rulers and
06:25tropical dictatorships, victims were thrown or lowered into pits swarming with starved crocodilians.
06:31Unlike big cats that kill quickly with a bite to the neck, crocodiles tear their prey apart using
06:36a brutal death roll. Victims suffered multiple crushing bites, broken limbs, and were dragged
06:42underwater before dying of blood loss or drowning. The utter terror of watching the water churn red
06:47while trapped in a confined pit made this one of history's most terrifying fates.
06:52Keelhauling A notorious naval punishment used by 17th-century European navies,
06:57keelhauling was practically a death sentence dressed up as a discipline measure.
07:01I will show them what the consequences are for threatening that which I hold most dear.
07:08I will leave no doubt about it.
07:10The sailor was tied to a rope, thrown overboard, and dragged entirely underneath the ship from one
07:16side to the other. If drowning didn't kill them, the razor-sharp barnacles encrusting the ship's hull
07:22certainly did. The victim's skin was ripped to shreds as they were dragged along the underside
07:26of the vessel. Survivors often succumbed to severe infections or shark attacks shortly after,
07:32making it one of the most brutal maritime punishments ever devised.
07:35There's nothing left to hold, sir. Then cast him loose.
07:40Coffin burial. Also known as the Iron Cage, this method involved locking the condemned inside a tight,
07:47human-sized metal cage left hanging high in the air.
07:50That's when I came across a path of death and destruction, which led me all the way here,
07:56into this cage, where I met you.
08:02Exposed to scorching sun, freezing cold, and open skies, the victim slowly perished from dehydration,
08:09starvation, and exposure over several days. Much like gibbeting, where the Iron Cage was publicly
08:14displayed to rot and deter observers, coffin burial turned the victim's lingering death into a warning
08:20sign. Exposed to birds picking at their flesh, the prisoner endured an agonizing, drawn-out passing
08:26while the public watched from below.
08:27You're an animal, and you belong in a cage.
08:31Colombian necktie. A notorious method of execution and psychological warfare,
08:36heavily used during La Violencia in Colombia and later by drug cartels.
08:40One day I would like to give you a gift of a Colombian necktie.
08:45The victim's throat was slashed horizontally with a sharp blade, and their tongue was pulled down
08:49through the open wound, leaving it hanging over the chest, like a necktie. Often performed while the
08:54victim was still conscious, death came swiftly via asphyxiation or massive blood loss. Beyond the
09:00physical torture, the primary goal was post-mortem humiliation and terrorizing rival factions.
09:06"...Punishment fit the crime."
09:09"...Columbian neckties! I cut their throats, and then I pull their life-tongues through the slits!"
09:15It remains one of the most chillingly iconic execution methods of modern history.
09:20Garroting,
09:21An execution method favored in Spain for centuries. The garrote evolved from a simple strangling cord
09:27into a terrifying mechanical iron collar. The prisoner was bound to a wooden post,
09:32with the iron band fixed around their neck. The executioner then turned a heavy screw at the back
09:37of the post, which tightened the band while simultaneously driving an iron spike into the
09:42back of the victim's neck. This dual action crushed the windpipe and severed the spinal cord.
09:47Though meant to be efficient, improper operation often resulted in a protracted,
09:52violent strangulation. Necklacing
09:54Emerging in the late 20th century, necklacing is a horrific form of extrajudicial execution.
10:00"...Last chance."
10:02The victim's arms and torso are forced into a rubber tire filled with gasoline. The tire is then set
10:08ablaze. As the rubber melts, it fuses directly to the victim's skin while burning intensely,
10:13trapping them in a raging fire. The victim endures severe third-degree burns, inhalation of toxic black
10:20smoke, and intense agony for upwards of 20 minutes before dying.
10:24"...You want to be in our gang, yeah? Move yourself."
10:27It is a terrifyingly accessible method that leaves an indelible, brutal impression on any onlookers.
10:33Elephant execution
10:34In South and Southeast Asia, crushings weren't just carried out with heavy stones. They used multi-tonne war
10:41beasts. Trained specifically for capital punishment, execution elephants were controlled by a driver
10:47to prolong the victim's suffering or end it instantly depending on the sentence. The massive
10:52animal would slowly crush the victim's limbs first, breaking bones under immense pressure,
10:57before finally stepping on the chest or head. This public display showed off absolute power,
11:03proving that even nature's giants were under the monarch's control. It was an absolute nightmare
11:08of a display that left crowds thoroughly traumatized. Impalement
11:12Impalement execution was a historical method of capital punishment, where a victim's body was pierced
11:17through a sharpened stake. The stake was usually driven vertically through the torso or upward through
11:22the rectum, exiting near the chest or shoulders. Once penetrated, the pole was planted upright into the
11:28ground. Gravitational pull caused the sharp point to slowly slide further through the victim's body.
11:33Depending on whether vital organs were pierced during insertion, death was either immediate or dragged
11:39on for hours or days due to massive internal hemorrhaging, shock and organ failure. Infamously
11:45utilized by figures like Vlad the Impaler, this punishment was designed to inflict severe agony
11:51and instill public terror. The Catherine Wheel
11:55Also known as the breaking wheel, this device turned execution into a slow, bone-crushing spectacle. The
12:01victim was tied to the spokes of a massive wooden wheel. The executioner used a heavy, iron-enforced
12:06bar to systematically shatter the prisoner's main limbs, breaking bones between the wheel's gaps. Once
12:13their limbs were mangled like rubber, the wheel was mounted high on a pole. The victim was left exposed to
12:18the elements, dying slowly over days from shock, internal bleeding, or hungry birds. It was an iconic medieval nightmare.
12:26Ling Chi – Death by a Thousand Cuts Practised in China for centuries until its ban in 1905,
12:33Ling Chi was designed to strip away life and identity slice by slice. The executioner methodically tied the
12:40victim to a wooden post and used a sharp knife to remove small portions of flesh over a long period.
12:46Much
12:47like flaying which peeled skin entirely to inflict maximum pain, Ling Chi relied on slow physical destruction,
12:53keeping the victim alive as long as possible, using precise cuts, before a final strike to the heart.
12:59It was a dark masterpiece of torture. Rat torture. Few execution methods play on primal phobias quite
13:05like rat torture. They take someone every day. Does anyone live?
13:12The victim was bound securely on their back, and a heavy metal cage containing hungry rats was placed
13:18upside down onto their abdomen. The executioner then placed hot coals on top of the cage. Driven mad by
13:25the rising heat, the rats scrambled for an escape route and found one by gnawing directly into the
13:30victim's soft flesh. The rodents burrowed through the intestines and organs, causing unimaginable pain,
13:36internal hemorrhaging, and a horrifying, slow, stomach-churning death.
13:40No more.
13:41The brazen bull. Invented in ancient Greece by Perillaus of Athens, the brazen bull was a hollow
13:47bronze statue crafted in the shape of a roaring bull. One of the most sadistic torture devices
13:52to come out of the ancient world was from the 6th century BCE in Sicily, known as the brazen bull.
13:58The condemned was locked inside, and a fire was stoked beneath the belly. As the metal burned red hot,
14:05the occupant was literally roasted alive. The bull was equipped with complex, acoustic pipes that
14:10converted the victim's frantic screams into the deep, echoing bellows of an angry beast.
14:15The brazen bull was specifically designed so that the screams of the person would actually almost
14:20sound musical to people's ears. It turned absolute agony into musical entertainment for the crowd.

14:37Boiled Alive
14:38Being boiled alive was a method of execution where the victim was immersed in a large
14:43cauldron or vat filled with liquid, such as water, oil, tar, or molten lead,
14:48and heated until death occurred.
14:50The process caused immediate catastrophic thermal injury. Severe pain receptors fired continuously as
15:01boiling liquid destroyed the outer skin layers and blistered the soft tissues beneath. As the
15:06heat penetrated deeper into muscles and internal organs, the victim experienced massive physiological
15:11trauma, extreme shock, and rapid fluid loss. Death typically resulted from severe circulatory shock,
15:17systemic organ failure, or asphyxiation caused by inhaling scalding steam and hot vapors.
15:23I didn't wait until it was happening. What happened after the second one?
15:36Which of these execution methods made your skin crawl the most? Let us know in the comments below.
