What happened when Jesus died—and why does Matthew describe opened tombs and resurrected saints appearing in Jerusalem?

In Matthew 27:51–53, the Gospel describes an earthquake, the opening of tombs, and the raising of many saints. The passage says they appeared to many people after Jesus' resurrection, but it does not explain what happened to them afterward.

This cinematic biblical mystery explores the passage through atmospheric, photorealistic artistic recreations and historical storytelling.

00:00The creepiest thing in the Bible isn't in Revelation.
00:03It's in Matthew, during the crucifixion.
00:07Jesus dies, the sky goes dark, the earth shakes.
00:12And then Matthew says this, word for word.
00:16And the graves were opened, and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
00:21and came out of the graves after his resurrection,
00:25and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
00:30Think about that.
00:31The moment Jesus dies, the dead just get up.
00:36They climb out of their tombs.
00:38They walk into Jerusalem.
00:40People see them.
00:42Their dead relatives, their dead saints, walking the streets.
00:46The Bible never says what happened to them after.
00:49Did they die again?
00:51Did they go back to their graves?
00:53Did they just keep living?
00:56For one afternoon, Jerusalem was a zombie movie.
01:00And nobody talks about it.
