Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer discuss their new film, revealing the hilarious and surprisingly specific reason they cast Kumail Nanjiani as the voice of a cat.
Transcript
00:00It's a Los Angeles fucking story.
00:02I'm obsessed with the casting choice to make Kumail Nanjiani and Seth Rogen the voices of the cats.
00:07I wanted them to be really surprising, like, as far as who you believe your pets are versus who they
00:11are not.
00:12And, like, I also wrote the animals to be sort of, like, the shitty roommates you live with that you
00:18didn't realize were, you know, like, your shitty deadbeat roommates.
00:21Right. You think they love you.
00:23Yeah.
00:23And then the other thing was that there was something about Kumail having a Pakistani accent and, like, having lived
00:29in L.A. your whole life, having adopted your cat from the streets of L.A.
00:32And then discovering that what your cat sounds like is that they're from Pakistan.
00:37That's the Los Angeles fucking story.
00:39Yeah.
00:40And I also targeted Kumail as a known cat freak because I was seeking people who I thought I could
00:46manipulate into working for less than they were worth.
00:49And so I was seeking people that.
00:52Now I should get paid.
00:52Yeah.
00:53Yeah.
00:53What did he get?
00:54Three dollars.
00:56But I knew he was obsessed with his cat.
00:59And so I was like, maybe he'll want to play a cat.
01:01And then his cat died while we were making the movie.
01:03And I had to ask him to be a cat in voice notes.
01:05That's kind of healing, I would imagine.
01:07I was like, does it make you feel better or worse?
01:09And I think it better.
01:10Now he has a new cat.
01:11So he's fine now.
01:12He's fine.
