The biggest challenge for foldable phones is the crease. In this discussion, Apple's team reveals their solution: a unique display stack and nano texture that not only eliminates the crease but also provides a more durable and premium feel than existing polymer surfaces.

00:00Just kind of cheap-feeling plastic surfaces.
00:02They don't feel good to touch.
00:03They're kind of wavy, wrinkly, all that sort of thing.
00:05And the nanotexture just wipes that all out.
00:08You really sort of had that understanding
00:12that the thing that was going to make the critical difference,
00:14the thing that people talk the most about
00:16when it comes to foldables is the crease.
00:18And you guys came up with this nanotexture.
00:21And as far as I know, no one else has that.
00:24People have tried different things.
00:26But what was the thinking behind that?
00:27Where did that sort of, like, come together?
00:29As we start thinking, how can we make this great?
00:32You design it as a complete system.
00:34So it's this incredibly complex hinge
00:36that's built to maximize flatness.
00:38This really unique display stack up.
00:41We have glass on both sides of the OLED
00:43so that it makes it more durable and flatter.
00:46And then the nanotexture, you know,
00:47people love the nanotexture on iPad and on MacBook Pros.
00:51And we kind of came up with an entirely new way of making that.
00:56Because what's interesting is, you know,
00:57the inner display, that front top surface,
01:00unlike a traditional phone, isn't a glass surface.
01:02It's a polymer surface.
01:03And I think if you've seen what's been out there,
01:05it's just kind of cheap feeling plastic surfaces.
01:08They don't feel good to touch.
01:10They're kind of wavy, wrinkly, all that sort of things.
01:12And the nanotexture just wipes that all out.
01:15It's beautifully flat.
01:16It feels amazing to touch.
01:17And it's incredibly durable.
