00:00Now Digger here got us into this mess and Digger's gonna dig us out!
00:05So much of this movie sits on a very distinct tone and as an actor, how did you approach your
00:10character to contribute to that?
00:12Everyone was trying to find this together with Alejandro kind of leading us almost like a conductor.
00:18And we were trying to find a way to be in harmony and find this very particular rhythm, this very
00:23particular energy, which honestly you don't really see in movies.
00:27There's a tone to this, there's a world, there's a boldness to it that I haven't ever really seen before
00:33and that was also true of the way he wanted us to interpret these performances.
00:37So honestly, it was like we were trying to find a new language together. It was scary, it was exhilarating,
00:42it was maddening, it was exciting and inspiring, but I miss it honestly.
00:46When will we do the next one?
00:47This dude!
00:48Bigger dude!
00:49Bigger dude!
00:50We were just speaking actually about Alessandro Bertolazzi who is head of makeup and he put so much effort into
00:57the
00:57construction of what each of the individual characters might look like and I remember him going out of his way
01:03to try to find a look for my character that I had never appeared as before.
01:09So if you have someone else create what the exterior might look like and then they put it on you,
01:16that's going to affect everything that you do, whether it's the shoes or the outfit.
01:20Then you have Jacqueline West with the outfits and this crazy sort of like inner lining of another coat that
01:26you wear, all of that informs what it is that you're given to do.
01:30Then you have the crazy story and then you have Alessandro saying go further, go further, no wait, pull back,
01:35no wait, turn to your right, turn to your left.
01:37We got to do so many different versions and it was through all of that process that these characters got
01:43honed and refined and that was remarkable and gave us so much.
01:48I didn't have the pressure of having to come up with anything instantaneously.
01:52So it was trial and error, all organic, listening to everybody else and trusting everybody else because these are some
01:58world class actors.
02:00It just felt so good to be able to take risks and you know you're being supported no matter if
02:05you screw up.
02:07It's all going to the good and to have Tom there radiating and beaming, that's a lot of energy.
02:14Jesse, is there anything about your transformation that you're hoping viewers will kind of latch on to?
02:19I don't think there's anything in particular. I just hope they enjoy the ride because we all certainly did making
02:28it and there's certainly no anticipating what's coming next in this story.
02:34And I think it's just really surprising on an entertainment level and on an emotional level.
02:39There's a lot of ideas being shared and discussed that has to in a way landed perfectly because obviously the
02:47tone and the comedy, wild comedy satire that we have.
02:52So that has a very particular rules in a way to make sense.
02:57But once we found that tone was super exciting to have the best jazz players in the world to do
03:03as like, you know, I always say like Miles Davis a little bit down here.
03:07Hey, John Coltrane, can you play? You know, it was incredible actors that we were able to really have a
03:12big range of possibilities.
03:14I know what I'm doing. I've never trusted a man more.
03:21What's one thing about working with Tom that would surprise even his diehard fans?
03:26The thing that amazed me about watching him is knowledge of every aspect of filmmaking when it comes to the
03:33lenses, the props, the this, the that.
03:35He always knows exactly where the camera is and what to do.
03:39For me, if I feel like, and I could be wrong, if I spent too much time thinking about all
03:44these different elements and thinking about the camera too much, my concern is that might get into my head.
03:50He's able to know all of that and then you watch a take and it's gone.
03:53It feels like a magic trick of some kind.
03:56Second nature.
03:57Yeah.
03:58I don't know if it'd be a surprise because it comes across in his performances is how much joy he
04:02finds in what he does and the way that affects everybody else.
04:06To get a chance to play, to watch him work, to learn unsurprisingly that he knows almost everything there is
04:14to know about filmmaking because he's interested and has always been interested in the making of things from the technical
04:21aspects to the inspirational aspects.
04:23And he's easy to be with, he's generous to everyone out there and he's hardest on himself just like these
04:32guys are.
04:33You know, it's a remarkable group of artists to be around.
04:37It was such a generous place to be and Tom was the leader in that generosity and he made being
04:42there fun and that's not something you get all the time.
