00:00 This happy pup, enjoying human affection, is actually a Czechoslovakian wolf dog.
00:04 Originally bred in what was then Czechoslovakia, this unusual breed was created by crossing
00:09 German Shepherds with Carpathian Wolves.
00:12 The goal wasn't simply to make a dog that looked like a wolf.
00:15 The original breeding program was intended to combine the endurance and physical abilities
00:19 of the wolf with the trainability and working qualities of the German Shepherd.
00:23 And you can still see that combination in the way these dogs look.
00:26 They have the long muzzle, thick coat, and narrow facial features that can make them
00:31 look remarkably wolf-like, but their behavior around a trusted person can be completely
00:35 different from what their appearance suggests.
00:38 Czechoslovakian wolf dogs can form very strong bonds with their owners and tend to be highly
00:42 attentive to the people they trust.
00:43 That loyalty can also come with a strong protective instinct, which is one reason they aren't considered
00:48 an easy breed for an inexperienced owner.
00:51 Instead of relying only on the typical barking you'd expect from a dog, some Czechoslovakian
00:56 wolf dogs can howl, especially when they're excited or communicating with other dogs.
