As species decline, green turtles offer glimmer of hope

Green turtles have made the rare jump from "endangered" to "least concern" in global conservation rankings, a remarkable success when many species are declining. The recovery follows decades of conservation efforts, including egg relocation, marine protection, genetic research and trade bans. In Malaysia's Sabah state, conservationists continue their work on the frontline.

00:17We started our hatchery with that year. We had about 600 old eggs collected and it
00:29keeps growing and up to today we have about 36,000 eggs.
00:59It was never in my mind that one day turtles can be least constant. So I cried. So I cried,
01:07happy and yeah when I, you know, I said, oh I've done my part.
01:13For half hour you can get your DNA.
01:16Be sure.
01:18And then we can spread.
01:29So, thank you.
01:30Good afternoon, everybody.
01:31Yeah, thank you.
01:46Thanks, everybody.
01:55We are already old and the generation that will come will be able to see our children again.
02:05They are still still there.
02:06They are not going to focus.
02:08That's what I mean.
02:09In my heart, they must be able to save their children because the generation will come and see their children
02:15again.
02:28Whatever we do, the survival of our business here is very much dependent on the natural resources and the beauty
02:38around here.
02:46If there is any pollution, the turtle will die first.
02:51So protecting them, meaning that we are protecting our ocean as well, our fish and everything.
03:08We are now living in.
03:11They've got us growing in a world that's not a healthy world.
03:25We've had to see how we can make careers.
03:25You are not alone in the world.
03:25We are again living in a world of a land, living in our world.
03:26We are also living in the world's lives.
03:27The biggest difference in the world is that a third nation helped us to sell the resources between the two
03:30and the two.
03:30The teaching and the four scholars have done that, the first time of the world is that a third country
03:34has become built together.
03:37and that's where the genetic work comes in.
03:53The efforts that we're doing right now, we can only see it after 20, 30 years.
03:57So that will mean that the work right now is least concerned does not mean there's no concern.
04:03That does not mean we should stop our conservation work right now.
