Black holes are famous for their immense gravity, but some can also produce incredibly powerful jets of plasma. These jets form when superheated material around a rapidly feeding black hole interacts with intense magnetic fields. Instead of falling entirely into the black hole, some material can be redirected outward at enormous speeds, creating narrow beams that extend across thousands or even millions of light-years. These powerful jets can travel far beyond their host galaxy and interact with surrounding gas and dust. Their energy can influence star formation and shape the environment around galaxies. Supermassive black holes at the centers of active galaxies are particularly capable of producing these spectacular cosmic structures. By observing black hole jets, astronomers can learn more about magnetic fields, extreme physics, galaxy evolution, and the behavior of matter under extraordinary conditions. These enormous plasma beams are among the most powerful phenomena observed in the universe.
