00:00Prosecutors present 96 million pesos in managers' checks as they sought to establish a pattern
00:06of concealment with year-end balances of Vice President Sara Duterte and her father,
00:10former President Rodrigo Duterte. Witness BPI division head Marwin Galvez confirms the father
00:15and daughter had a joint time deposit account opened in January 2010 with a principal amount
00:20of 40.65 million pesos. The account was renewed 12 times and reached 41.72 million pesos after
00:28its final roll over in February 2011. Defense lawyer Michael Poa objects to the presentation
00:34of the bank records and questions their relevance to the case. Senator Judge Ping Laxon then asks
00:40prosecutors whether they were trying to establish a pattern aimed at proving concealment through
00:44their direct examination. Private prosecutor James Bryan Ibrahim Ali says,
00:49We wanted to establish a pattern up, but the point eventually is that the manager's check
00:55is not worth it in the year-end balance. It's because the money is floating.
01:01Senator Judge Pam Aquino asks Galvez whether deliberately purchasing managers' checks and leaving them unutilized
01:07was a known practice in banking circles. Galvez says it was usual for some managers' checks to be unutilized
01:13and requested to be returned.
01:15I'm not going to answer, Your Honor. I'm going to remind you that the other clients are purposely going to
01:23buy a manager's check
01:25to return again after six months.
01:28Senator Judge Sherwin Gatchalian says he reviewed Duterte's statements of assets, liabilities, and net worth for 2010 and 2011
01:35but did not find the 96 million peso time deposits.
01:39Meantime, Senator Judge Kiko Pangilinan asks how many insurance policies the Vice President and her husband,
01:45Mance Carpio, had in total.
01:46So the total number of insurance policies?
01:52According to our Clerk of Court is 19 insurance policies.
01:5619.
01:57Excluding the shares and bonds that were manifested earlier.
02:0419.
02:05Okay, for the record.
