Cornell protesters swarm campus to support Jane Doe

Tensions are rising at Cornell University as students protest over sexual assault allegations involving a former student and call for greater accountability from the university administration.

The protests have coincided with growing support among faculty for a no-confidence resolution targeting Cornell’s leadership. According to professor Paul Ortiz, 40 of the Faculty Senate’s 75 voting members have backed the resolution, with concerns focused on campus safety and how sexual assault cases are handled.

President Michael Kotlikoff faced students during a campus assembly and defended the university’s response, saying, “We’re not hiding anything at Cornell.” He added that students would hear proposals aimed at improving campus culture and addressing the issue. Kotlikoff has so far rejected calls for his resignation.

The controversy centers on allegations made by a student identified as Jane Doe, who says seven former Chi Phi fraternity members sexually assaulted her in 2024 after she was allegedly pressured to take drugs. The men deny wrongdoing, and no criminal charges have been filed.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has launched an active criminal investigation, while Cornell is conducting an independent review of its handling of the allegations.
