00:02President Trump has approved the execution of the former U.S. Army Major who killed 13
00:07people in the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell announced
00:13last night that Trump approved the execution of former Army psychiatrist Nadal Hassan by
00:19firing squad. Hassan opened fire at Fort Hood on November 5, 2009, killing 13 people and wounding
00:26more than 30 others. He later said he carried out the attack to stop U.S. soldiers from going to
00:32Afghanistan and killing Muslims. Hassan was shot during the attack and left paralyzed from the waist
00:37down. At his court-martial, he acknowledged he was the shooter and made almost no effort to defend
00:43himself. He was convicted in 2013 and sentenced to death. If the execution goes forward, Hassan would
00:49be the first person put to death through the military justice system since 1961. He's one of four men
00:56currently on military death row at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Trump's approval starts the process,
01:02but an execution may still be a long ways off. Hassan can challenge his sentence in federal court,
01:08which could delay it for years.
