00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio. Now, for those who like their food, there's one tremendous culinary event
00:37taking place at the Four Seasons Hotel in London today. It's called Who's Cooking Dinner? And apparently 20 top chefs
00:46all fighting in one kitchen, or should I say cooking in one kitchen, each cook for a table of 10.
00:52Now, the deal is that none of the guests know who will be cooking their dinner until the chefs come
00:59out and they then sort of select which table they're going to cook for, and they're treated to a unique
01:04four-course meal from their celebrity chef.
01:08And the best part of it, the really the best part of it, is that a lot of money is
01:12going to be raised for leukaemia research, which is a really clever, great idea. Fun idea, but it's going to
01:19raise a lot of money down at the Four Seasons.
01:21Talk about food. I'm not terribly adventurous, you know, with food, really. Now, what about you? You're a bit more
01:27adventurous with food, I think.
01:28Oh, I'm a big foodie. I love food.
01:29I saw you with a most odd drink today.
01:33Oh, that's just jasmine tea. That's nothing.
01:35It had this thing growing in it. Just explain to our viewers.
01:38It's just jasmine flowering tea. It's just the flower, and it's dried, and then you put hot water on it,
01:42and then it opens up, and it's... yeah.
01:44I thought it looked extraordinary. It's already crept out of some laboratory somewhere.
01:48Now, who's with us? Paul Crabe is with us, Rachel, an expediter from Aberdeenshire. Finished last week with an impressive
01:55three wins.
01:56Let's see how we get on this Monday afternoon. You're joined by James Hogan, a freelance translator, copy editor, who
02:03translates comics and video games from French and German into English.
02:07So you're a linguist, to begin with, and it says here that you like bouldering in your spare time.
02:13And what is this, bouldering?
02:14It's a bit like traditional rock climbing, but you tend not to go so high, as there are no ropes,
02:18unless you're quite crazy.
02:19Indoor?
02:20Indoor or outdoor.
02:22It's free fall, as it were. I mean, you haven't got harnesses.
02:24No, no, you just have to fall properly.
02:26Well, I'm glad you managed to make it here today.
02:28Just about.
02:28All right, big round of applause then for Paul and James Hogan.
02:37And Susie, of course, over in the corner with Dan Walker,
02:42who's joyful interlude with us finishes today, sadly.
02:46Oh, I can't believe it.
02:47Oh, no. You were with us last week, and today I'm very glad that you came back.
02:51It's been a great pleasure.
02:53More great sporting stories and nonsense today.
02:55A good sport wearing a waistcoat, I see.
02:58Well, I thought, you know, I'd go a bit Ricky from The Voice.
03:01All right.
03:01Great success for him.
03:03Why not?
03:03Well, now then, Paul Crabe from Aberdeenshire.

11:33That's right.
11:34Yeah.
11:36It's not there.
11:37OK.
11:37Slightly surprising, but, yeah, not there.
11:41What have we got?
11:42There is a seven in there.
11:44You could have had astride is in there, but there's also an eight, radiate.
11:48Radiate.
11:49Yeah, very good.
11:50Thank you very much.
11:5138 plays 21.
11:53And, James, numbers game for you.
11:55Cheers.

12:48How about Paul?
12:49Same here.
12:50You both did?
12:51I think so.
12:52Rachel.
12:54Is it so difficult?
12:55It was there.
12:57If you say 25 times nine is 225.
13:02And then take away the five for 220.
13:05And then two plus one is three.
13:07And times it together.
13:09There you go.
13:09Well done.
13:15Very good.
13:16All right.
13:18Now, 38 plays 21.
13:20Stan's still there.
13:21We turn now to Dan.
13:23And Dan, you're well known, really.
13:26Well, occasionally.
13:27You are well known.
13:28There's no question about it.
13:29But something happened once upon a time when your fame skyrocketed.
13:34For one day only.
13:36One day only.
13:37And it wasn't to do with anyone actually recognising me.
13:40It was my window into the world of the super famous, really.
13:44I was in Brazil for the World Cup in 2014.
13:48And I was following England for part of that tournament.
13:50And I don't know if you remember, they played in Manaus against Italy in their first game.
13:54So it's 32 degrees first thing in the morning, boiling hot.
13:57And we were actually staying in the same hotel as the Italian team.
14:01And the fans had managed to find out where they were staying and what time they were arriving.
14:05So there were 1,000, at least 1,000 fans lining the streets all around the hotel.
14:10Security everywhere holding them back.
14:11And as soon as the door to the bus opened, they started going wild, bonkers.
14:16So I thought, I'll just try and sneak in.
14:18Shades on.
14:19In we go.
14:20And Balotelli was there.
14:21And Pirlo.
14:22And Keely and all these guys, and they're stopping for pictures.
14:25And I think the vast majority of the crowd were just thinking, let's get some pictures.
14:31So I just got dragged in.
14:32People started shoving their babies at me.
14:35I was having selfies and signing things.
14:38And I often think about these poor Italian fans who got back home after the World Cup.
14:42Who's this guy?
14:44Who's this fella?
14:45I don't recognise him.
14:46That was me.
14:47I'm very sorry.
14:49I'm not a member of the Italian team.
14:51And from that sort of height, I remember quite soon after I got back from the World Cup,
14:55I was stopped in the street by some guy where we live in Sheffield.
15:00And he said, excuse me, can I just grab a quick word with you?
15:03And I went, yeah, no problem.
15:05I said, here we go again.
15:06Where's the security?
15:07It's like being in the Italian team again.
15:09And he said, I'm sure I know you from somewhere.
15:11And the smile's on the face.
15:13I'm thinking, here we go.
15:14Did you used to work in Burger King in Birmingham?
15:19Back to earth with a bag.
15:21Absolutely.
15:22Absolutely.
15:25Yeah.
15:27Very important, too.
15:28Very important.
15:29Precisely.
15:30I'm funny, but I reckon your picture's on millions of Italian walls now.
15:34There we are.
15:35All right.
15:3638 to 21.
15:37James is in the lead.
15:38And what should we do?
15:40We're going to Paul.
15:41Paul for a letters game.
15:42Can I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
15:44Thank you, Paul.

24:16Now what's this risk you're taking here Paul? Advisory?
24:19Mm.
24:21Just debating that very point. It has to be the O-R-Y rather than E-R-Y. I'm afraid
24:25Paul. Sorry.
24:26That's okay.
24:26Worth having a crack at it.
24:28Yeah.
24:29And anything else? Susie?
24:30No, just advisor for seven, but that's little consolation for Paul, really.
24:34Indeed. All right.
24:3664 to 35, and Susie, back under the spotlight because it's your origins of words.
24:43What have you got for us today?
24:45Well, everyone's heard of Aesop's fables, which is pretty amazing, really,
24:49because he had such an impact on the English language,
24:53whether we've taken direct idioms from his stories or just the idea,
24:57the moral of his stories and made them into these pithy sayings and aphorisms.
25:02So I just thought I'd give you a sprinkling of them because, honestly, there are many, many.
25:05But sour grapes is always a nice one to describe somebody who's a bit sulky
25:09and a bit jealous of somebody else's success.
25:12That did originate in one of Aesop's fables in which there's a fox
25:16who spends an incredibly long time trying to reach a bunch of grapes that are very high up.
25:21He can never manage it, and he goes off on a bit of a huff.
25:25And to hide his frustration, he tells himself simply that he didn't really want them anyway
25:29because they would have been sour.
25:32Quality, not quantity, is another good one.
25:34That's associated with a fable called The Lioness and The Vixen.
25:38And in this fable, a mother fox and a lioness are talking to each other
25:43and they're boasting to each other about their young.
25:45And the fox points out to the lioness that she gave birth to a litter of cubs each time,
25:51but the lioness had only one, to which the lioness replied,
25:55but that one is a lion.
25:57Photo-compete, checkmate there.
25:59And finally, there's a great fable called The Mountain in Labour, very short.
26:02And this is probably where Shakespeare drew the idiom Much Ado About Nothing from.
26:09In the tale, a mountain is groaning and it appears ready to burst.
26:13Very dramatically, the earth is quaking, rocks are tumbling down, trees are crashing,
26:18and people are gathering around expecting something amazing to happen,
26:22obviously in fear and awe, but waiting for some dramatic moment.
26:26And finally, at the peak of this activity, the ground opens.
26:30They think this amazing explosion is going to happen,
26:32and out of this mountain, this mound, comes a little mouse,
26:36a tiny little mouse, who then just toddles off.
26:39And for some reason, people are quite disappointed at this outcome.
26:42But the moral was, much outcry, little outcome.
26:46And that, as you say, was probably the route of Much Ado About Nothing.
26:48Very good, very good.
26:55All gone and no dinner.
26:57Yes.
26:57There's another one, isn't it?
26:58All mouth and no fans.
26:59Which sort of slot in there, yeah.
27:01Exactly.
27:01All right, 64 plays, 35.
27:03James in the lead, all right.
27:05And it's James' letters game, penultimate letters game.
27:08James.
27:08Could I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
27:10Thank you, James.
27:11L.
27:12And another.
27:13And a final U.
27:42Stand by.
28:14Yes, James?
28:14Just a six.
