00:00Imagine diving thousands of feet below the ocean's surface, into a pitch-black world
00:04where sunlight never reaches. This is the realm of the sperm whale, one of the greatest hunters
00:09on earth. To survive down here, they hunt colossal creatures in total darkness, navigating entirely
00:15by sound. But what happens when scientists finally look inside these magnificent giants?
00:21What secrets, treasures and tragedies are hidden within their stomachs?
00:26Today, we are diving deep into the ocean's archives to uncover what is really hidden
00:31inside a sperm whale. If you could examine a sperm whale's stomach, the first thing you'd notice
00:36is a bizarre archaeological dig of the deep sea. Sperm whales are specialized predators,
00:41their primary target. Giant and colossal squirts. Down in the abyss, these whales engage in titanic,
00:49silent battles, with creatures sporting tentacles lined with sharp hooks and suction cups.
00:54If you look closely at a sperm whale's skin, those circular scars are living proof of these fierce
00:59underwater wars. Because squids are soft-bodied, you might expect them to digest completely.
01:06But there's one part that doesn't. The squid beaks. Hard, ketinous and completely indigestible.
01:12These beaks build up inside the whale's digestive tract by the thousands.
01:17Marine biologists have frequently found massive accumulations of sharp squid beaks
01:21locked away in a single whale's stomach. A permanent record of every haunt it ever won in the deep.
01:26But squid beaks are the only strange thing lingering in their digestive systems.
01:32Sometimes, nature creates something so rare and valuable that it's often called floating gold.
01:38We are talking about amber grace. When sharp indigestible elements like squid beaks irritate the lining of the whale's intestinal,
01:46the whale's body secretes a waxing fatty substance to coat and protect itself.
01:50Over years, and sometimes decades, this mixture hardens, travels through the digestive tract,
01:58and is eventually expelled into the ocean. When it first comes out, it smells foul.
02:03But after floating on the ocean currents and aging under the sun for years, it transforms into a rare,
02:09earthy substance. Historically, ambergris has been prized by the luxury perfume industry
02:15for its ability to make scents last longer on human skin. It is so rare and legally protected in
02:21many places that a single chunk can be worth a small fortune. However, not everything hidden inside
02:26a sperm whale is a natural wonder. In recent decades, marine biologists have found a much darker
02:31man-made archive inside these creatures. Because sperm whales hunt using echolocation,
02:38bouncing sound waves of objects to determine what they are, they can easily be tricked.
02:43In our modern oceans, the deep sea is no longer just filled with fish and squid, it is filled with
02:48human trash.
02:50Whales can only investigate discarded plastic bags, synthetic ropes, industrial packaging,
02:56and tangled fishing nets for food. When swallowed, these materials cannot be digested. They take up
03:03physical space, tricking the whale's brain into thinking it is full when it is actually starving.
03:08Over time, blockages lead to severe malnutrition, internal injuries and tragic pitching. The inside of
03:15a sperm whale tells two completely different stories. One is a story of wild, untamed nature,
03:22of ancient battles in the dark abyss and mysterious biological treasures. The other is a stark warning
03:29about our impact on the planet. Even the most powerful hunter in the deep ocean, built to conquer
03:35the crushing pressure of the abyss, is completely defenceless against the plastic waste we leave behind.
