00:01Nearly 7,000 litres of fuel oil leaked from an international container ship into the port of
00:08Brisbane on Friday and since then there have been reportings of pelicans and other birds coated in
00:15oil across Brisbane's north and east. So far two pelicans have been rescued including this one
00:22today but wildlife rangers have the challenging task of spotting and then catching other affected
00:29birds. While the spill is visibly impacting some birds in the area there are concerned dolphins and
00:37even turtles could also be affected. Certainly the animals that we have observed so far are Australian
00:44pelicans and some cormorants as well and ibis impacted. We're also looking at other marine wildlife
00:51so turtles and dolphins and other animals which could potentially be impacted and we haven't observed
00:57any of those animals being affected at this point in time. Maritime Safety Queensland says this spill
01:02has had a significant impact across the board delaying other international ships. These are
01:09international shipping companies so they have you know pretty extensive insurance provisions and then
01:14all the effective stakeholders put a claim in and then what comes out of that will come out of that
01:19through that process. This spill occurred when a container ship was refuelling on Friday morning but
01:25Maritime Safety Queensland is investigating the exact circumstances and couldn't shed any light today on
01:31what occurred. The ship operator could now face a hefty fine. While the spill has been largely contained
01:38there are patches of oil that remain particularly in areas beneath wharves and around berthed boats.
