00:00 Researchers at the National University of Singapore are contributing to a data center that runs on not computer chips, but
00:08 brain cells.
00:08 The founders say that the biological data center prototype has the potential to be more energy efficient than computers.
00:16 Nicholas Ng with more.
00:19 These flashing lights aren't indicating that a computer's processes are hard at work.
00:25 Instead, they're measuring activity in these brain cells being stimulated on a chip.
00:31 Researchers are able to collect the cell's responses to their prompts and use it as a form of computing.
00:38 While it might sort of be thinking, researchers say the setup probably doesn't have a consciousness.
00:46 What we have here is a very simple biological neural network that has no more than 200,000 neurons and
00:52 they're mostly flat.
00:53 These CL1 units form a prototype for Singapore's first biological data center.
00:58 And it could be far more energy efficient than usual.
01:02 Each CL1 draws 30 watts per unit, comparable to a household appliance.
01:08 Conventional data center chips can use hundreds of watts.
01:12 They also use very little amount of data.
01:15 And this energy and data efficiency point to a very interesting application in the physical AI space.
01:21 As one of the use cases that we are, you know, caring about a lot today.
01:27 Because if you think about a robot or a drone, A, they have to carry their own power supply.
01:31 So there is a very tight energy budget that they have to adhere to.
01:35 Apart from AI, the CL1 units offered new opportunities to medical researchers at the National University of Singapore.
01:43 The CL1 keeps neurons in tightly controlled environments and sets them up so that they can be studied in incredible
01:49 detail.
01:50 That also gives researchers the opportunity to study neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
01:56 And since the neurons they use for their studies can be grown from a specific individual, it opens the possibility
02:01 of tailoring treatments specifically to them.
02:04 We are hoping to use them to understand disease mechanisms, to do some drug screening,
02:10 and to understand how particular combinations of drugs can actually increase or normalize the functionality of these networks.
02:20 Professor Patani's team also wants to see how other kinds of brain cells can be used in computing.
