00:38Doc, first of all, ano po ba ang newborn screening at ano-ano ang mga sakit na maaaring matuklasan kapag
00:45nagpa-newborn screening ang isang bata?
00:48So, ang ating Expanded Newborn Screening or ENDS is conducted po sa ating mga bagong silang na sanggol
00:55wherein isang maliit na tusok lang sa sakong or sa heel ni baby is enough para makasagit po ng kanilang
01:01buhay.
01:02Now, it is now expanded. Before kasi, six conditions lang yung madedetect po nito.
01:08So, ngayon, around 28 conditions are detected in one test alone.

02:35So, it is actually a very simple test wherein isang ilang patak lang po ng dugo from the sakong
02:41at ninalalagay po siya sa isang filter card and this is processed po sa ating mga laboratories.
02:48Now, once po ang CT po yung mga patients, ini-inform po yung hospital or center kung saan po ito
02:54ginawa.
02:55And then, the parents will be contacted po that there is a positive test.
03:00For you, again, this is a screening test.
03:02So, you really have to do the confirmation for you to confirm the diagnosis.
03:09So, minsan po kasi...
03:11Yes.

03:16Marami po kasing mga sakit na usually walang sintomas.
03:19Masa una, meron kasing parents that would ask me that bakit kailangan pa mukha naman healthy yung baby,
03:25mukha naman siyang chubby, malakas dumede.
03:27Pero yung sa loob po pala yung problema na pwede po maka-apekto sa utak, sa organs, or sa paglaki.
03:34Now, for example, one of the most common conditions that we encounter is what we call G6PD
03:39or glucose exposphate dehydrogenase deficiency wherein may kulang po sa enzyme na glucose exposphate.
03:47So, pag na-expose po kasi, for example, yung bata sa trigger or sa food or sa mga gamot
03:53na hindi po ma-process na kanyang body,
03:56yung effect po kasi is sumasabog yung ibang red blood cells.
04:00And this is what we call hemolysis.
04:01The effect is paninilaw, merong anemia, and sometimes may bleeding.
04:07So, that is one example.
04:08So, another condition.
04:10Kasi we want to insist that this is really important because,
04:15for example, in a case po of a metabolic disorder such as congenital hypothyroidism,
04:21wherein kulang po yung production or the body cannot produce the thyroid hormone.
04:25So, pag ang effect po is kung hindi po kasi maagapan at meron pong pag-delay sa paglaki ng bata,
04:33so, affected po ito, affected po yung brain development niya.
04:38Because once it is treated, sometimes they will grow up normally once we start the treatment as soon as possible.
04:44So, important po talaga that we do the expanded newborn screening in all our babies.
04:49Doc, sabi mo nga, yung result could be as many as 28 conditions.
04:56But, pag nag-positive po ba yung result nito, does it mean na for sure may sakit na yung bata?
05:03Or is it just a warning or parang signs lang na posibleng magkaroon ng sakit yung bata?
05:11So, it is not actually a definitive test.
05:14You really have to do the confirmation.
05:17So, what we tell the parents is kung positive po yung anak ninyo,
05:21huwag po mag-panic, magpa-confirm.
05:24Because through that confirmation, dito po natin malalaman kung totoo po talaga yung disease condition.
05:29Again, the newborn screening is just a screening tool.
05:32It is an initial test to check if the conditions are present.
05:37So, it is not definitive, the diagnosis.
05:40So, we really have to do that confirmatory test.
05:43All right.
05:44Doc, panguli na lang po ngayong ipinagdiriwang natin nga ang National Newborn Screening Week.
05:49Ano po ang pinakamahalagang mensahe ninyo para sa ating mga magulang na mayroon newborn?
