00:02Hired by the day and often a lucrative venture.
00:05It would turn over probably 40 each house, so over 80.
00:09Obviously, I don't get to keep all that.
00:12That's 80 grand.
00:13Yep, yep, a year.
00:15A favourite of landlords and tourists,
00:17short-stay rentals have long raised questions
00:20about the impact on housing left for long-term residents.
00:23We know that it's more of a challenge in some locations versus others,
00:27so I think with housing policy,
00:28you can't manage what you can't measure.
00:30An inquiry into the sector in South Australia last year
00:33found the state had a shortage of detailed data,
00:36recommending a formal registry of rentals
00:39to provide better information and guide policy.
00:42Other states have similar schemes to shape decision-making.
00:45The short-stay association backs a statewide registry and scheme,
00:49but says it's not keen on what it calls
00:51unnecessary duplication by individual councils.
00:55Though that's exactly where some of the biggest fights have unfolded.
00:58Last year, the council here in Mount Gambier backed down
01:01on a controversial move to increase rates for short-stay landlords.
01:05With the register, I'd be very upset if they actually wanted to charge us
01:09and put an extra fee on it.
01:11Farmer-turned B&B host David Galpin would welcome a register,
01:15which also lays out minimum standards for hired homes.
01:19If we've got every operator working the same and working properly,
01:24it's got to help the industry.
01:26Public consultation closes October 30.
