AI Startups in the US (2026)
Money is flowing overwhelmingly to AI. According to a third-party analysis, US startups raised $412.7 billion in the first half of 2026, and about 86% of that went to AI companies. Every other category (biotech, fintech, climate, and so on) shared the remaining roughly $57 billion.
Mega-rounds shape the picture. In March, OpenAI closed a $122 billion round at an $852 billion valuation, the largest ever. Anthropic's $65 billion Series H is also among the year's biggest. These are not just single companies, they are the center of gravity of the whole sector.
Beneath the big labs, there are three layers:
Infrastructure: Chip and cloud companies like Cerebras, which raised $5.5 billion in May.
Applications: Coding (Replit, Cursor), legal (Harvey), voice (ElevenLabs), and video (Runway). Replit raised $400 million and Harvey raised $200 million.
Small startups: The average AI seed round is around $17 million, and the money is going to vertical, niche solutions such as agentic AI and industry-specific tools.
Risks and observations:
Concentration: A handful of companies absorb most of the capital, which makes fundraising harder for non-AI founders.
Volatility: Monthly funding swings wildly, from $134.6 billion in March 2026 to $3.2 billion in June, depending on when the mega-deals close.
Valuation pressure: Some reports also point to growing regulatory scrutiny of large rounds and valuations.
Takeaway for creators: Most builders won't compete with the big labs. They'll build tools and niche apps on top of them. The angle "Where is the big money going, and where do small players find opportunity?" works well for an AI-focused channel.
Note: Figures come from different trackers (TechCrunch, NeuronFeed, Dealroom, etc.) and vary by source. If you use this in a video, show the source on screen.
