The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Samajwadi Party are gearing up for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections across ten vacant seats in Uttar Pradesh. With the BJP having direct numbers for seven seats, the party has fielded eight candidates and is seeking additional support from independents or possible cross voting. Meanwhile, Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party aims to secure a third seat, relying on anticipated cross voting from disgruntled legislators and MLAs belonging to alliance partners such as Rashtriya Lok Dal and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party. Each Rajya Sabha seat requires 37 votes, setting up a closely watched legislative contest between the NDA and the opposition.

00:00The ruling party, the BJP, or basically the NDA, is all set for Uttar Pradesh.
00:05Rajya Sabha elections coming up. They want to put the best foot forward with the candidates
00:09they believe will help in projecting the image of the BJP or the NDA further.
00:14And already, as we know, with the further names that are coming in, let me take you through the details.
00:21BJP has named eight candidates for ten vacant seats.
00:25But it's going to be interesting. BJP has numbers for about seven seats in the upper house of the parliament.
00:30But there is a certain confident Bhartia Janata party stating that they can have eight seats too.
00:37Basically, they can have the remaining at least one more.
00:40But Akhilesh Yadav is also eyeing the third seat and possibly hopeful of a cross-voting.
00:45Piyush Mishra joins me for the latest on this.
00:49But how is the BJP confident possibly as we look at some of the scenarios?
00:54They'll be looking at if there are rebel leaders or the cross-voting that can happen.
00:59They'll be looking at the independents as well.
01:02Rajya Sabha is as important, remember, when it comes to a certain dominance when it comes to the upper house,
01:08where the numbers are still closed for the NDA and the opposition compared to how it is in Lok Sabha,
01:13clear majority for the National Democratic Alliance.
01:15So what we are looking at is who gets to become the Rajya Sabha member of parliament,
01:20representing for the state of Uttar Pradesh, especially for the BJP.
01:24And with the elections also that is approaching for the assembly constituencies,
01:28they are going to be ensuring that they have big names,
01:31especially who can put their narrative, what the BJP has to say,
01:35what the government has to say in the upper house of the parliament.
01:38And that is what we are going to be looking at.
01:40Ten seats for the vacant seats, for Uttar Pradesh, for the BJP aiming at least seven.
01:45They have the numbers clearly for seven.
01:46But what about the remaining three?
01:48Sources within the BJP are suggesting they can go even for one more.
01:52And for at least eight seats in total.
01:56Akhilesh Yadav, the Samajwadi party, is also looking at at least one more seat.
02:00But he'll be hopeful of cross-voting.
02:03We have more news coming in and Piyush Mishra joins us for the latest on that.
02:07Piyush, help me take us through the numbers.
02:08It's getting confusing.
02:10It's ten vacant seats for the BJP.
02:13How do you think the BJP is eyeing one more?
02:15And how do you think Samajwadi party is confident also, hopeful of a cross-voting?
02:23Well, for the first time, Pooja, Samajwadi party is confident
02:27because it thinks that two MLAs from the party of Jain Singh,
02:35they are going to vote for him.
02:36And from R&D and two from SBSP, Mr. Rajwar's party,
02:42two from his party are going to vote for Samajwadi party.
02:45So they think that around four MLAs from NDA are going to do cross-voting.
02:49Apart from that, they are also feeling that a few disgruntled MLAs
02:54who are also not happy with the party leadership in BJP,
02:58even they could be fielded and they could be supporting the Samajwadi party candidate.
03:03And that's why they are likely to field the third candidate.
03:07Now let's talk about the number game.
03:09You need 37 for election of one seat in Rajasabha.
03:14And BJP has got the support of 296.
03:17It needs the support of only, you know, two more MLAs
03:22and cross-voting will happen only and only when either of the sides.
03:26If BJP fields one candidate, which means the ninth candidate,
03:29and if Samajwadi party also decides to field the third candidate,
03:34the cross-voting is likely to happen.
03:37Now it remains to be seen how it is going to further, you know, happen.
03:42Piyush keeps asking all the latest on that
03:44because that is reflective of the kind of conflicts,
03:47the number game that we are looking at.
03:49Remember, for the BJP or any party really in the parliament,
03:51it is eventually about the numbers.
03:54How they're going to ensure that they have bigger number here
03:57to be able to put their narrative forth
03:59is going to be an important test for each of the parties, for the Rajasabha.
04:03I have more news coming in on the news break.
04:05Let's take a look at that.
04:06Piyush, thank you very much for now.
