00:16Thank you very much.
00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:32I was reading a very interesting article the other day about the popularity of what used to be called plastic
00:39surgery,
00:39but which is now called cosmetic surgery.
00:41Apparently, each year, more and more people are getting work done.
00:46Work done not only on their faces, but various other parts of the body.
00:49In Britain, apparently, the amount of cosmetic, and I'm reading here, procedures,
00:53I think it's increased five-fold in the last ten years, but, you know, give it to the Yanks, you
00:59know.
01:00Ten million cosmetic procedures were performed last year alone.
01:04Extraordinary, extraordinary number.
01:06And when I was, I had a close brush with cosmetic surgery.
01:11When I was 70 a couple of years ago, Alan Sugar, with whom I was working on the appendix at
01:16the time,
01:16said, I understand it's your 70th birthday coming up.
01:19I said, yes, it is, it's Alan.
01:21He said, well, look, I'll tell you what I'm going to do.
01:23He said, I'm going to get your eyes done.
01:25He said, I'm going to get those big bags under your eyes removed, and it'll knock ten years off you.
01:29And I said, may I think about it?
01:31And he said, yes, but don't take long.
01:33And I thought about it, and I let it pass.
01:36Yeah.
01:36I'm not surprised they're more into it in America.
01:38Well, you don't need anything, and I'm sure you're not the sort of person that would tinker with that sort
01:42of carry-on anyway.
01:42I don't, I mean, I know too many people that have had operations that they have to have to kind
01:46of voluntarily go under the knife.
01:48But in America, the weirdest thing I saw when I was there over the new year was they have, you
01:53know you can get padded bras?
01:54You can get padded pants.
01:55They have extra padding, like you would in your bra for your bum.
01:59That's the last thing I'd ever need, but, yeah, that exists.
02:03So if you ever want some, I'm sure they can do it over the internet.
02:05They can ship them over.
02:07Yeah, I'll give it a thought, if I may.
02:09Yeah, let me know.
02:10Well done.
02:11Thank you, Rachel.
02:12Now, who's with us?
02:13Alexander's back.
02:14Alexander Asim, reigning champ, did well yesterday.
02:18Economics graduate from Durham, plays hockey, rugby, and snowboarded for Durham.
02:23Now in the city, working for one of the banks, and good luck to you.
02:26Have a great career, and keep them in order, will you?
02:29Alexander?
02:29Thanks, sir.
02:30You've got to compete now with Paul Crabe, a purchasing assistant from Inveruri in Aberdeenshire.
02:37Have I pronounced that correctly?
02:39That's right.
02:40And you're a ballroom and Latin dancing fanatic, not fanatic, but enthusiast.
02:46That's right.
02:47Should we put it that way?
02:47You're a medal winner, I understand.
02:49That's right.
02:49I've got three medals for my ballroom and three for my Latin.
02:54Excellent.
02:55Excellent.
02:55Well, you'll be able to discuss that with Rachel, who's a very keen dancer and a very accomplished dancer, too.
03:00But what we'd like to do is give you a warm round of applause, and good luck to you both,
03:05Alexander and Paul Crabe.
03:12And over in the corner, Susie then, of course, joined once again by Dan Walker, TV sports presenter, journalist, and
03:18recent acquirer of a little dog.
03:22Yes, a little dog.
03:23I need to point out, no padded pants over here.
03:26We've checked.
03:27We're padded pant free.
03:28The little dog's called Winnie.
03:30Yes, that's right.
03:31And she's a cockapoo.
03:31And you've come through on your promise as well.
03:33I understand that the whistle you said you'd send yesterday is in the post.
03:36Indeed, and good luck with it.
03:37Now, Alexander, let's get this thing underway, shall we?
03:40This countdown today.
03:41Sure.
03:42Letters game.
03:42Afternoon, Rachel.
03:44Afternoon, Alex.
03:44Consonant, please.
03:46Start today with S.
03:48And another, please.
03:51T.
03:52And one more.
03:54F.
03:55And a vowel.
03:57U.
03:59And another.
04:00A.
04:02And another.
04:04O.
04:05And a consonant.
04:08C.
04:09And another.
04:12L.
04:14And a vowel.
04:15And the last one.
04:17I.
04:18And here's the countdown clock.
04:20A.
04:21And one more.
04:22A.
04:42And another.
04:42A.
04:50Thank you, Alexander.
04:52Just the five.
04:53A five. And Paul?
04:55A risky six.
04:56A risky six. Now then, Alexander?
04:58Tails.
04:59Thank you. Focals?
05:01Yes.
05:02OK, we talk about bifocals, don't we?
05:05But not focals. They're not there on their own, Paul. I'm sorry.
05:09That's OK. Bad luck.
05:10What can we have? Dan?
05:12Lots of fives in there, a few sixes.
05:14There's one eight. Factious. F-A-C-T-I-O-U-S.
05:20Yes.
05:20Factious.
05:21Factious.
05:22As opposed to fractious.
05:23Yes.
05:23It means the same thing, though, really. It's relating to or inclined to dissension.
05:28So if you're slightly irritable and aggressive and like a bit of a fight, you are factious.
05:36And you could also be fractious.
05:37And you could also be fractious.
05:38Interesting. Well done.
05:40And now, early lead for Alexander there.
05:42But Paul, you're a crack at a letters game.
05:45Hi, Rachel.
05:46Hi, Paul.
05:46Could I have a consonant, please?
05:48Thank you. Start with M.
05:50And a vowel.

05:53And another.

05:56And a consonant.

06:48Six, not written, don't.
06:49Six. Alexander?
06:51Just five again.
06:52And your five?
06:53Exams.
06:55Madams?
06:56Madams, why not?
06:59Madams?
06:59Excellent, yes. Good six.
07:01Very good. What else can we have there? Dan?
07:03We couldn't better a six, could we?
07:05No, we couldn't. We had modems as well.
07:08All right. So, Paul's surged ahead by one point only.
07:13Paul's on six. Alexander, five.
07:15As we turn back to our numbers game, Alexander?
07:19Four large, two small, please, Rachel.
07:21Thank you, Alex. All the top row and two of the others.
07:23And for the first time today, your numbers are ten, nine,
07:27and then the big four, one hundred, twenty-five, seventy-five and fifty.
07:32And the first target of the day, six hundred and ninety-one.
07:35Six, nine, one.
07:38Two times.
07:38Five, twenty-five, twenty-five.
07:42Five, twenty-five, twenty-five.
07:54Die, die, die, die.
08:07Alexander?
08:08No, too far away.
08:10Too far, Paul?
08:10691.
08:11691.
08:13And?
08:15975s are 675.
08:17975s, 675.
08:19100 plus 50 is 150.
08:22Yep.
08:23Divide that by 25 is 6.
08:256.
08:26Add that on and add your 10.
08:28Yep.
08:29Well done.
08:29Good man.
08:30Well done.
08:31Well done indeed.
08:33Building a bit of a lead there.
08:3416 to 5 as we go into our first Tea Times teaser.
08:39It's red pasta and the clue.
08:41If you go abroad, these will make sure you're charged.
08:44If you go abroad, these will make sure you're charged.
09:05Don't forget your adapter.
09:12So it's adapters.
09:13Adapters.
09:15Very important.
09:1516 plays 5.
09:17Alexander on 5.
09:18Paul, letters.
09:20May I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
09:21You may.
09:21Thank you, Paul.
09:22B.
09:23And another.
09:26N.
09:27And another, please.
09:29S.

10:23A seven.
10:23Alexander?
10:24Seven as well.
10:25OK.
10:26Yes?
10:27Busting.
10:28Busting, Alexander.
10:29Besting.
10:30And besting.
10:32Being bested.
10:33Yes.
10:34We happy?
10:34Very happy.
10:35Dan?
10:36There's a bevy of sevens in there.
10:37Outings.
10:38Yeah.
10:39Igneous.
10:39Yeah.
10:41Would bounties...
10:42Bounties, would that be?
10:43Yes.
10:44Is that an eight?
10:45It's there.
10:46Absolutely brilliant, yeah, because the bounties...
10:47The sum paid for killing or capturing a person.
10:50It's a bounty on his head, and you can certainly pluralise that.
10:53OK.
10:53I think that's the only time I've got an eight on my own.
10:55I'm very proud of that.
10:56Excellent.
10:56Give a round of applause, please.
10:59Well done, Dan.
11:01All right.
11:02Well done.
11:0323, please.
11:0412.
11:04And Alexander, your letters game.
11:08Constantly, Rachel.
11:09Thank you, Alex.
11:10W.
11:11And another.
11:12R.
11:14And one more.
11:16N.
11:18And one more.
11:20T.
11:22And a vowel, please.
11:25O.
11:26And another.
11:27A.
11:29And one more.
11:31O.
11:32And a consonant, please.
11:35D.
11:38And a vowel, please.
11:39And the last one.
11:41I.
11:42Stand by.
11:44Bye.
12:15Alexander.
12:16Just a five.
12:17A five, Alexander, Paul.
12:19Seven.
12:20And a seven.
12:21Alexander.
12:22Drain.
12:23Drain and?
12:24Tornado.
12:26And tornado.
12:27Coming through like a tornado.
12:29Very good, yeah.
12:30You happy with that?
12:31Can you beat it?
12:32I thought I backed up my eight in the last round, but seven is as good as I could do,
12:36but
12:36you've outdone everybody.
12:38Oh, just my one letter more, Tandoori is there for eight.
12:43Tandoori.
12:43Tandoori.
12:44Very good.
12:47Where does it come from?
12:49What's the meaning of Tandoori?
12:51Tandoori is an oven.
12:52It's from Urdu and I think all the way back to Persian, but it means an oven.
12:56Okay.
12:56Thank you very much.
12:57Well done.
12:5730, please.
12:5812 and it's numbers time.
13:00Now for you, Paul Crabe.
13:02Okay.
13:03Could I get a white hole, please?
13:04You can indeed.
13:05Thank you, Paul.
13:05A one, two, one, and a two.
13:08And these five little ones are four, two, six, eight, ten.
13:16And the big one, 100.
13:17All the evens.
13:18And the target, 160.
13:21One, six, zero.
13:23One, six, zero.
13:45One, six, zero.
13:53Now then, Paul.
13:55160.
13:57Alexander.
13:58160 also.
13:59Right there.
13:59Paul.
14:00Eight times two times ten.
14:02160.
14:03There we go.
14:03Alexander.
14:04Six times ten.
14:06For the 60.
14:06Yeah, very, very straightforward.
14:08There we go.
14:08All right.
14:10So, time to have a chat with Dan.
14:14Dan, you're a competent, a good player on Countdown.
14:19You're a good player.
14:20But that skill doesn't stretch across other TV quiz shows, apparently.
14:24No.
14:25Tell us a little bit.
14:26Embarrass us.
14:27Or embarrass you.
14:27Yeah, this is slightly embarrassing for me.
14:29My record on TV quiz shows is pretty appalling,
14:32which is why my wife always likes it for me to come on Countdown,
14:35because I can't really lose on Countdown.
14:37I get to sit next to Susie.
14:38I get a nice cup of tea.
14:39And, you know, unlike our wonderful gentleman over there,
14:43I don't get to go home at the end of it.
14:44But every other TV quiz show I've been on, I've lost.
14:48Quite spectacularly.
14:49First one was Question of Sport.
14:50Yeah.
14:50I got overexcited, and we lost by a point right at the end.
14:54Then I went on Celebrity Mastermind.
14:58Specialist subject was The Gunpowder Plot,
14:59which I studied at university.
15:02Got quite a high score, but, again, lost right at the end.
15:04Martin Lewis, the money man, beat me right at the end,
15:06so lost that one as well.
15:08Then I went on Pointless for the first time,
15:10and my knowledge of berries let me down.
15:13Home in the first round.
15:14I mean, good company,
15:15because you've been home in the first round of Pointless as well.
15:17Yep.
15:18Back on Question of Sport,
15:19they said you can't do as badly as you did last time.
15:21Got overexcited again.
15:23Went on a little run in the final buzzer round.
15:26Got two questions right.
15:27Thought, I'm unstoppable here.
15:28Pressed the buzzer, got it wrong.
15:29Lost two points.
15:30Lost by a point.
15:32Went back on Celebrity Pointless,
15:34this time at Christmas.
15:35You might have seen this one.
15:36It was quite recent.
15:36And I was on with Mark Lawrenson,
15:38and the question was,
15:40name a country beginning with the letter A, T, L, or S.
15:46And you're not allowed to confer,
15:47but Mark Lawrenson whispered to me,
15:48he goes,
15:49Trinidad and Tobago.
15:51It's OK, that's fine.
15:52Mark's got one.
15:53We're safely sorted.
15:54I've got Suriname in the bag,
15:55so I thought,
15:56I cannot go out in the first round here.
15:57And then it comes around to Mark,
16:00and Alexander Armstrong says,
16:01Mark, just remind you,
16:03we need a country starting with A, T, L, or S.
16:06And Lauro says,
16:08I'm going to go for Alaska.
16:12Now, silence in the studio,
16:14sort of shock in the studio.
16:15Alexander Armstrong says,
16:17right.
16:18And then everyone else starts laughing.
16:20Of course, it's a state, not a country.
16:22We go home again in the first round.
16:25So that's why I love coming on Countdown,
16:26because if the answer is Alaska,
16:28we all know you can't have it.
16:30Quite right.
16:31Very good indeed.
16:32But tell me,
16:33there's this mastermind thing.
16:34That's a tough old...
16:35Dan got the third highest score in this series,
16:37so he's been very modest.
16:38Is that right?
16:39Yeah.
16:39Well, my mum rang after...
16:41She rang...
16:42She gets very excited about quiz shows,
16:43my mother.
16:44And she rang after,
16:45she said,
16:45how do you get on?
16:46And I told her,
16:47and then she watched it,
16:48and she said,
16:49do you know what, Daniel?
16:50You've not disgraced the family.
16:51So there you go.
16:52I've got to wait with it.
16:54Well done.
16:54Well done.
16:55Well done, Dan.
16:55Now then,
16:5640 points to 22.
16:58Paul building up a bit of a score here
17:00as we turn now to Alexander.
17:02Alexander,
17:03your letters game.
17:04Thanks, Nick.
17:05Consonant, please, Rachel.
17:05Thank you, Alex.
17:07N.
17:08And another?
17:10H.
17:12And another?
17:14V.
17:15Ooh.
17:17And a better one?
17:19R.
17:21And a vowel, please, Rachel.
17:23A.
17:24And another?
17:25E.
17:27And another?
17:29U.
17:30And one more?
17:33A.
17:36And a consonant, please, to finish.
17:37And the last one, W.
17:39Stand by.
17:41And a consonant, please, to finish.
17:44And a consonant, please, to finish.
17:45And a consonant, please, to finish.
17:49And a consonant, please, to finish.

18:01And a consonant, please, to finish.
18:02And a consonant, please, to finish.
18:03And a consonant, please, to finish.
18:03And a consonant, please, to finish.
18:03And a consonant, please, to finish.
18:06And a consonant, please, to finish.
18:12Alexander. Five. Risky. Five. And Paul? Five as well. Mm-hmm. How much of a risk, Alexander?
18:18Well, I don't know whether it's a word or not, basically. Waver, but without the eye.
18:24Yes. How about Paul? Exalted to see him. Well, you're both in the way or go down. Waver?
18:32It sounds very unlikely, but, of course, we'd probably use it quite a lot. It's to move in a quivering
18:36way or to flicker is to waver without the eye.
18:39So it's very, very good. Well done. Yeah. Well done. But no advantage, unfortunately, Alexander.
18:4445 to 27. And Dan. Tough one, that one, wasn't it? Mm-hmm.
18:50I did know better than five either, but apparently there is a seven in there, too.
18:53There is a seven. There's unaware. To be unaware. Yeah. Good word. All right.
18:5945 to 27. And where shall we go? Paul? How about a letters again from Paul Grabe?
19:04Can I have a constant, please, Rachel? Thank you, Paul. Tea. And another?
19:08Another? P. And another? D. And a vowel? I. And another? U. And another? E. A constant? R. And another?

20:02Ditchy.

25:51station very nice haven't seen that one station what had you seen there was one
25:56seven that we had postman postman yes thank you 74 to 43 good score Susie
26:04Susie pay attention you're on Susie's wonderful origins of words I'm gonna go
26:10back to early calculations and the word calculate as she goes back to the Latin
26:16calculus which for the Romans was a small pedal pebble because that's how they
26:21counted with little pebbles as their as their counters but digit is quite a nice
26:26one as well because I was asked if there's a link between digital and digits
26:30and yes there is is the simple answer and but digit itself the original meaning was
26:36a number lower than ten a whole number below ten because the counting was
26:42always done on the fingers which is why of course the digit today is also a
26:47finger and toe so the number and the and the finger or toe are directly linked but
26:54why digital well if you or most people will probably know this but me in the
26:59late 1930s and early 40s and the work of mathematicians and engineers led to a new
27:04type of calculating machine as opposed to these analog devices these new machines operated on
27:11data that was represented as a series of discrete digits but staying with
27:16calculations very quickly computing has gone on for centuries and that word has
27:21been around for centuries as well you have to look to another Roman word and the
27:25Latin putare which meant to think as well as to prune and the idea was of tidying and
27:31setting something to rights whether it was a calculation or where it was a bush or a
27:36hedge and we've been computing for centuries the combat means we're so it's
27:41like joined up thinking to think with other things and the first computers were
27:46people as you might expect they were counting their digits counting their
27:50numbers on their fingers and and and hands and it wasn't uncommon to find jobs
27:55advertised for computers these were the humankind mostly women who would do all
28:00sorts of computing and counting and it was only obviously in the 1930s and 40s that
28:04it started to be used for early electronic devices but turns out we've been
28:08computing for an extremely long time
28:15thank you as ever Susie 74 to 43 Paul in the leaders wish we go letters game for
