01:27Or as close as you can get to it, against Tanahashi.
01:34Aiding that position today is the fact that Naito has won his last three
01:40against Tanahashi in singles matches.
01:43Or perhaps that's foreboding the fact that these two very closely matched individuals
01:51could wind up in a flat-footed tie all-time.
01:57The Tetsunaito has a very narrow 8-7-1 edge, and this could indeed go the distance as well.
02:0830 minutes will be on the clock.
02:12Tetsunaito heads to the ring with the sense that perhaps his clock is running nearer to zero
02:19with every passing match.
02:21And before all is said and done for Ellen Gopinable, he wants that spotlight to leave last
02:30from the Tokyo Dome.
02:39And to finally have his moment in front of the 40,000, screaming a roll call.
03:13The clock is ticking for Tanahashi as well, Chris.
03:17You know it, I know it, all the fans know it.
03:21Do you think Tanahashi knows it?
03:26I think there is a part of Tanahashi that knows it, and every other fiber of his being
03:36will deny it and delay it for as long as he can.
03:40How many times have we said it, how many times have we sat here and said that when it comes
03:45to the big spots, when it comes to G1 season, when it comes to the chips being down, you
03:52can never ever bet against the ace.
04:02And as the years have gone by, that bet has seemed somewhat less than safe, but he'll put it all
04:15on red to try and beat Naito.
04:18and ascend once more to claim that flag and take home that trophy for a fourth time.
04:40By every measure, Tanahashi is...
04:49The man in the G1 tournament wins total matches, match time.
04:56But his record against Tetsuya Naito in this tournament absolutely goes against every other record that Tanahashi owns in the
05:06G1.
05:08And this is what they have done against each other.
06:03et même Tanahashi knew it at the time,
06:08he thought Tetsuya Naito was going to be the next ace,
06:11he was going to be the next Hiroshi Tanahashi.
06:15In the end, Naito took a very, very different path to stardom,
06:20his own path.
06:22When they looped back around in 2017,
06:24it was that Ellen Gobinable that Tanahashi had to encounter,
06:29that guy who was tearing the Intercontinental Championship
06:33to pieces and hurling it from pillar to post.
06:37I think, Kevin, when you speak about the record they've had recently,
06:41I keep going back to that time when they met at Wrestle Kingdom in 2017,
06:48and Naito beating Tanahashi for the Intercontinental Championship,
06:53and symbolically bumping his fist into the heart of Tanahashi as if to put the nail in the coffin
07:02of their rivalry.
07:04And ever since, Naito has had the upper hand with Tanahashi again and again,
07:09and did so again in the New Japan Cup.
07:12Not even using Destino, a jackknife pin,
07:15putting Tanahashi out the cup.
07:17Yeah, that was certainly a very rugged win,
07:20and we've seen their matches take different twists and turns throughout.
07:24You think back to 2011,
07:27and the rise of Naito and that October 11 meeting for the title,
07:34Tanahashi getting the win,
07:35but everybody was primed for a Naito night.
07:40And now here we are 11 years later,
07:45and Tanahashi not what he was,
07:47especially in terms of this tournament the last few years.
07:51But every bit, still kind of the standard bearer, and regardless of the record,
07:58both coming in needing a win.
07:59This is a very important matchup mentally for Naito moving forward in this tournament.
08:05Yeah, no doubt.
08:06I mean, obviously the mathematics are certainly against Tetsu Naito if he loses this match.
08:13But yeah, just to know that you're in this position,
08:17that you really have to win this tournament.
08:20And he'll probably go back.
08:21If he does lose, he'll say how on brand of me, how Naito this is.
08:26Now I'll turn it around.
08:27But how many times does he have to say it?
08:31When eventually it doesn't come true.
08:34And those continual delays, that continued delayed gratification for Naito
08:39in achieving his goal, and maybe there might come a point where he has to let it go.
08:45So in the tournament, each wrestling once, Red Shoes will call for a clean break.
08:50Naito will reposition.
08:52Naito dropping the decision in Sendai last Wednesday against Hiroki Goto.
08:58Tanahashi out-muscled by Aaron Hanare.
09:06I don't think Tanahashi took a little bit of inspiration from Hiroki Goto.
09:11Another guy with bad form against Naito in recent years.
09:16He's able to dig down.
09:23And look at this, Tanahashi.
09:27Really pounding away at Naito in the corner.
09:30They're not very ace-esque now.
09:37And now, a big Tanahashi in the corner.
09:40The elbow catches, springboard.
09:43Cross body.
09:44Not really familiar.
09:47No riff of air guitar, but rather an L.I.J.
09:53Naito-like pose of Tranquilo.
10:06Naito did align himself with Los Ingobernables and come back.
10:11Tanahashi was still very much the top guy in New Japan Pro Wrestling.
10:17Very much carrying the standard.
10:19And being the authority that Naito wanted to challenge.
10:22Oh, Tanahashi skinning the cat, catching Naito.
10:24But now, oh, and a dropkick.
10:27The back of the head.
10:28That will free Tanahashi's grip from that rope.
10:34And now Naito, very aggressive on the floor, throwing Tanah into the railing.
10:46Naito's being assertive here, calling Naito back into the ring.
10:51Yeah, Naito giving Red Shoes a yeah, yeah, and now he's going to shoot us over here.
10:56Hold on to your hat.
10:57Oh, no.
10:59Wow.
10:59Oh, my God.
11:02Oh, wait a minute now.
11:12Watch this.
11:13Watch this.
11:13It's very dangerous.
11:14Oh, no.
11:15Down the neck across.
11:17And now he's got that Nelson hooked in.
11:23And he's staying in this hold for as long as he can.
11:2816.
11:33And now let's go.
11:34Yeah, all of a sudden Naito remembered how to get out of that one.
11:37But he threw Tanahashi back in.
11:40Oh.
11:47Well, getting the most that he could out of that hold while still at the same time
11:51wanting to beat Tanahashi in the ring.
11:53Wanting to beat Tanahashi and wanting Tanahashi to know that he could have won
11:58for your count out if he wanted to.
12:00That's an excellent point.
12:02So Tetsuya Naito.
12:06Very much in that Roddy Piper vein of just when you think you know the answers,
12:11Naito changes the questions.
12:17And driving the head forward of Tanahashi is extremely painful hold.
12:25And certainly Tanahashi will have Zack Sabre Jr. next.
12:29And Aichi and Zack backstage.
12:32Very happy with himself knowing whatever happens tonight.
12:35He's clear at the top of his block.
12:38And probably with a brace full of notes of directions that he can go on either of these
12:46opponents later on down the stretch.
12:48Yeah, Naito's next opponent, Evil, which is always a physical and emotional journey for Naito.
12:55As he hammers away on the neck of Tanahashi.
12:58And now the neck breaker.
13:12Oh, look at this now.
13:14What in the world?
13:18Pulls him out.
13:19Trapped in the corner.
13:20The neck breaker from Tanahashi's perch on the second rope.
13:27Able to kick out.
13:30Again, a bit of a nonchalant cover from Naito.
13:34Almost as if, Chris, like you said, with the hold here on the floor, he's letting Tanah
13:40know, I could have beaten you if I wanted to.
13:43Now, I think there's always another, there's always subtext to everything that Tetsuya Naito
13:48does.
13:49I think there was subtext to what Tetsuya Naito tried to do all the way through the
13:54New Japan Cup.
13:55And he didn't use Destino once.
14:00Instead, it was a parade of jackknife covers,
14:03povo de Australia, different pinning combinations.
14:09There might have been a little bit of that in terms of building his own
14:13mental flexibility in those gymnastics that come in handy in the G1 Climax.
14:20And Naito stomping away on Tanahashi.
14:40Naito is very confident going into the match with Goto.
14:48Oh, what a swat of a left hand from Tanahashi.
14:51That can be a dangerous left hand.
14:53We've often talked about how Tanahashi broke Goto's jaw and forced him out of this tournament
14:59with that dragon swat.
15:07Uh-oh, catching the leg.
15:09Could be dragon screw time.
15:10Yes, sir.
15:11There he goes.
15:12And it was the knee of Naito last year.
15:16The one submission lost to Zack Sabre Jr.
15:19The knee injured in the process.
15:23And Naito had to forfeit the rest of his matches.
15:33Quite frankly, a lot of directions for Tanahashi to go
15:37in that position, whether it is the knees.
15:40Naito, much like Sonata, issues with his vision.
15:50Standing atop the second rope.
15:55Oh!
15:59Naito, I think just like everybody else was expecting a flipping,
16:03sent on Tanahashi, stomped right down across the knee.
16:08And if that crowd was clapping a Tanahashi rhythm before,
16:13now they're clapping for Naito.
16:17Tanahashi's not afraid to put the black hat on if he needs to.
16:34You know, I almost think, if anything, that's the mindset when I spoke to Tanahashi
16:40before Forbidden Door in Chicago, where he was expecting as an outsider, as an invader,
16:46the crowd to be behind John Marksley.
16:48And that cheers, and the chance that Tanahashi threw him off.
16:53Backed into the corner, Naito's still hobbled.
16:55He's thinking about the combination.
16:57Let's see if he can sweep the leg.
16:58He does, and scores with combination cabrón.
17:09And it was a fervent attack on the knees of Naito that gave Tanahashi the victory
17:16in the Intercontinental title battle against Tetsuya Naito back on June 11, 2017.
17:26And that was the last time that Tanahashi defeated Naito in a singles match.
17:32Naito wants Esperanza out the corner, pulls him in.
17:35Oh, my God.
17:37Got it.
17:38Got all of it.
17:39Absolutely waffled Tanahashi.
17:41That's a move that Naito's really sort of workshopped over the last few months.
17:49Didn't start out all that pretty, but he's got it down to a tee now.
17:55And sent shock waves down the spine of Tanahashi.
17:58Here we go, running Destino.
18:00No, backslide.
18:02Instead to the neck.
18:05Gloria.
18:06Got it.
18:09Legs hooked.
18:10Kick out at two.
18:13And look at this, Pluma Blanca.
18:16So again, not a...
18:20All together, regular submission hold from Naito.
18:23His version of the Koji clutch.
18:27That he debuted on the way to his first G1 win in 2013.
18:48And Tanahashi trying to turn his body towards the ropes in hopes of a rope break, but man, he's still
18:57got a lot of ground to cover.
19:01And Red Shoes is right there.
19:04Ready for any indication of Tanahashi to say, I've had enough.
19:10And he is finally able to get to the ropes.
19:14Tano really had to muscle all of Naito's weight.
19:17And now this time, Tetsuya Naito will conveniently forget to let go of the hold until now he lets go.
19:35Naito ever aware of his surroundings.
19:40And the Rolodex.
19:44The wrestling acumen of Tetsuya Naito, which I don't think gets enough credit for as flamboyant and as much a
19:52showman as he can be.
19:53A real student of the game.
19:56And is doing all the work necessary.
19:59Everything in the right place.
20:01To set up Destino.
20:03Exactly.
20:04Including hammering in on the net.
20:06How many times have we seen those elbows play dividends?
20:11Oh, man.
20:23Zờ, get rid of Mee.
20:31Tano really trapped, had no place to go other than meet that elbow again and again!
21:15Tana juste hang on.

23:37Défense, all offense right now.
23:45Et un grand smile across the face of Naito.
23:50Et un smile right back from Tanahashi.
23:59There were guys like Zack Sabre Jr. and Jay White who do this to bait their opponent into a mistake.
24:05But Tanahashi and Naito, it's a raw clash of wills and a desire to see themselves hit hardest and hit
24:15last.
24:20Tana gets quick, Naito with the boot, lingered a bit.
24:24Oh, it's in the ice.
24:26And now Naito going back to the neck.
24:31There's the enziguri.
24:34He had to open the door to use his legs by going back to the neck and now Tana.
24:41Wait a second now, Tanahashi trying to reposition as the two men almost come together in a stalemate.
24:48Again, Naito is trying to ring up that arm.
24:51Tanahashi doing all he could to pull him in.
24:54And now Twist and Shout.
24:56And he's still hooked up, Kevin.
25:02Another spin of the record as the Twist and Shout plays in Ota.
25:06Time and time again.
25:19All right, so now Tanahashi, Naito reversed.
25:23Ah, reversed right back into the sling blade.
25:27And another one.
25:30It's coming home for Tanahashi.
25:33Oh, the avalanche of momentum has all just come crashing down on 10 feet.
25:39Until you're Naito, he's able to kick out.
25:47Able to kick out of the sling blades, but he won't from high-five blow.
25:52Let's see if Tanahashi can hit it.
25:57Naito.
25:58Tanahashi will call an audible.
26:01Here we go.
26:02As Naito gets to his feet.
26:03Aces high.
26:05Got it.
26:09And at the 20-minute mark, Tanahashi Naito is flat.
26:14Naito is absolutely flat.
26:16Tanahashi adjusting his foot in for a second.
26:20Oh, no.
26:22Watch out.
26:23Oh, just like in the cup, Gabby.
26:26Tanahashi Naito.
26:402,518.
26:43More people than have watched a professional wrestling event in this building since the pandemic.
26:52And they're split right down the middle, I have to believe, for Naito and Tanahashi.
26:59Naito, as well.
27:00Come on.
27:01Come on.
27:04Come on.
27:06Come on.
27:08Come on.
27:09Come on.
27:10Come on.
27:10Come on.
27:10Come on.
27:10Come on.
27:16How much damage did Tetsuya Naito do to himself with the missed high fly flow?
27:23Yes, he was able to kick out of the roll-up, but is Tanahashi actually going to be able
27:31to get back on his feet and protect himself if Naito can get up first?
27:37Oh, no.
27:40But Tanahashi almost defiant.
27:42He'll be the first to get to his feet.
27:45Oh, no.

29:52I don't think Naito wants to hear any words of encouragement.

30:07What a magical story this would be if Tanahashi can turn the tide of the hands of Father Time
30:18and reclaim glory in the G1 Climax Tournament for Tetsuya Naito.
30:26Chris, reality has to be setting in.
30:30It's not done yet, but it's going to be a very, very hard time for Tetsuya Naito to walk.
30:40Certainly, you'd have to say he won't be clear at C-Block at best.
30:46He'd have to win in a tie-break.
30:55Tanahashi tangling with Zach on the 30th.
31:00And Naito with Evil.
31:02Oh, wouldn't Evil be the one to finally snuff out Tetsuya Naito, send him to 0-3.
31:12One thing last year to lose one and fourth at eight, but to actually lose two in a row and
31:19could very well be three in a row.
31:23Tetsuya Naito's path to G1 Climax victory has gotten longer, more arduous, and damn near impossible.
31:34But Hiroshi Tanahashi withstood Tetsuya Naito's best shot and was on the doorstep of tasting defeat.
31:49Well, has it Tanahashi, given the folks here in Ota Chris, hasn't he given them enough as much?
31:57He certainly has given them enough, not just tonight, but over the years.
32:01So there's nothing Tanahashi likes more than to give these people a little bit more.
32:12Tanahashi is why they came back in the mid-2000s.
32:16And to a lot of the 2,500-plus here today is why they came out in force.
32:39Thanks to everyone for coming out here tonight. This afternoon, I should say.
32:55It's thanks to everybody here coming out to support that we as wrestlers can perform to the best of our
33:03ability.
33:11It's thanks to everybody here coming out to support that we as wrestlers can perform to the best of our
33:13ability.
33:13Thank you so much for G1.
33:16Right here in the summer, G1.
33:19First in three years.
33:23And you all came out for it.
33:40And the question is how can Tanahashi have paid all of you guys for your support?
33:50How can we make you enjoy this wonderful business?
33:55And I found the answer after searching for it for so long. I found the answer to that question.
34:02The answer is to win G1 in a snap.
34:06Thank you.
34:08Thank you.
34:09Thank you.
34:10Thank you.
34:13Thank you.
34:15Having the love for Tanahashi means everything to fans all around the world.
34:20From Chicago, Forbidden Door, to the ancestral home of New Japan Pro Wrestling.
34:26Going back to March 6, 1972 here in the Ota City Ward Gymnasium.
34:31Hiroshi Tanahashi wins your main event.
34:49And Tanahashi will give one last pose to the fans here in Ota.
34:54Where, of course, the damage has accumulated in that war with Tetsuya Naito.
35:02But one last adieu from the ace.
35:06All the way up to the fans.
35:13Every region of available seats.
35:17All the way to the top.
35:23Everybody's got their camera phones out.
35:31So what does this win for Tanahashi mean in terms of this tournament moving forward?
35:44It means a huge ego boost.
35:46That's what it means.
35:48I thought Tanahashi, you know, he was a little bit hurt.
35:55But I think with all of these rapping fans getting into...
36:02Tanahashi has got a superhuman body and he's also got a superhuman ego.
36:06And I think the...
36:28Tanahashi is going to make sure that everybody gets that one last bit of fanservice.
36:32And it won't be long until they're rushing the guardrails again.
36:38To clap hands with the ace.
36:56Then when those last bits of restrictions come down, Tanahashi would be first to stand right outside the doors and
37:03shake every single person's hand who comes out here.
37:09There's a lot of go ace towels that need Tanahashi sweat.
37:17So Hiroshi Tanahashi wins our main event here tonight.
37:23We'll be back on Tuesday, Cork and Hall.
37:27Match lineups available at njpw1972.com.
37:32That will do it for the official broadcast.
37:35Chris will stick around.
37:36I'll stick around.
37:37In case there's...
37:38You pay me overtime, right?
37:41Well, that guy right there, he'll be the one.
37:43Him?
37:44Yeah.
37:44Oh.
37:46Please.
37:46Please, no wonder.
37:47Many yen.
37:48All right.
37:49So Chris and I will be together with all of you Tuesday, 630 local start time, Cork and Hall.
37:55Lineups, njpw1972.com.
37:57Great job, my friend.
37:58Thank you, Kevin.
37:59And thanks to all of you watching all around the world on njpwworld.com, the king of sports streaming.
38:06All right.
38:07So Hiroshi Tanahashi is making his way to the Comet Bus right now and will regale you with whatever sound
38:15he has on tape.
38:16Tanahashi not afraid to linger and put his words out there into the universe.
38:21So while we're doing that, let's have a look at what's happening in each of the blocks right now.
38:26Starting with A block, Kazuchiko Okada moved two clear with his second win over Toriano last night.
38:32So he's clear at the top of the table on four points.
38:36Then second, you've got Badluck Fale, Jeff Cobb and Toriano.
38:40One win, one loss.
38:42There are two points, so a tight second.
38:43And then you've got fifth.
38:46Tom Lawler has not wrestled yet.
38:48We've got a match in hand.
38:50Two matches in hand, in fact, over Kazuchiko Okada at zero.
38:54And then Lance Archer and Jonah rounding up.
38:58A block, B block.
39:00Jay White sitting clear at the top, sitting pretty on four again.
39:04From Tama Tonga, second.
39:07Who's one and O.
39:09Sanada and Taichi both one and one.
39:12So you could say they're tied for third.
39:14Or you can say Taichi with the tie break is third and Sanada fourth.
39:18Then Great Okan at zero again has not wrestled yet.
39:23Chase Owens is 0-1, sixth.
39:26And Tomohiri Ishii, 0-2.
39:27Here's the ace.
39:32So, of course, if there were any doubts, Tanahashi is definitely going to go backstage and leave his comments.
39:49And this is the first time that Tanahashi has been able to defeat Tetsuya Naito in the G1 as we
39:55talked about on the broadcast earlier.
40:01This is certainly a big, big deal for him in recent years.
40:07From the bottom of my heart, it's a huge, huge relief and a huge weight off Tanahashi's mind.
40:18But as much as there is a bit of relief, there's a wave that we go through as wrestlers when
40:34you finish your match and then get ready for the next one.
40:39And you wake up and you go to the gym and you get on that cycle.
40:45And you get ready for the next one.
40:48Every single moment is focused on that match.
40:54Every single moment is focused with the mindset that you aren't doing enough and that you have to do more.
41:00And you have to concentrate every single bit and every single element of your power.
41:05Because sometime, someday...
41:19It won't be somebody else.
41:23It will be professional wrestler Hiroshi Tanahashi that cuts through this air and the last bit of this lingering malaise
41:34in the pandemic.
41:36It will be the most important for everyone to enjoy wrestling to its fullest in Japan along with Tanahashi.
41:43But for now, for everybody concerned, let's be safe and let's focus that power, focus that energy on professional wrestling.
42:04And it will be the most important part of this match.
42:06Yes, I think there's a difference.
42:14I think there's a lot of memorable matches with Tetsuya Naito.
42:21There's lots of memorable matches with Tetsuya Naito.
42:24But it's flashing back to October 2010 in Rio Goku.
42:38Facing Tetsuya Naito for a singles title as we talked about.
42:43And it was the feeling after that match that, as Tanahashi said, from now on, we will bring professional wrestling
42:57up together.
42:58And Tetsuya Naito saw such a different path of action but was so successful that, in a way, those words
43:06seem almost a little bit embarrassing.
43:08But that was the start of a chapter for the two of them.
43:12And perhaps this is the start of a new chapter for Tanahashi.
43:15To rush to run down the other two blocks here over in C-Blocks.
43:19Now, is now Saksaber Jr. leading the Herd at four.
43:22Two points clear once again from Hiroki Goto, who is on two points.
43:28And then Tanahashi and Hinare, one-and-one now.
43:322 points each in 3rd place
43:34and then dropping down to
