00:00On my first night, the old guard warned me. The class bell at Harrowgate Academy has not rung
00:06in 30 years. Let it ring twice, he said. On the third ring, you stay at your desk.
00:13On my fourth night, the bell rang three times. My name is Ray Delgado. I took the night security
00:20job at Harrowgate Academy, an old boarding school standing empty since the students moved across
00:26town. The first three nights were dead quiet, just pipes ticking and my own boots on the tiles.
00:32On the fourth night, at 2.13 in the morning, the class bell rang. Once. The sound rolled down the
00:39east hallway, from above the stairwell. Then it rang a second time. I took my flashlight and went to the
00:46stairwell. The bell hung dead still in the dark. The rope was coiled and tied off behind the doorframe,
00:52dry-rotted in its knot. Across the courtyard, room 12 of the north block was glowing warm yellow.
00:59Through the glass, I saw the desks, and at the front of the room, a figure standing at the blackboard.
01:05Then it turned its head toward the window. Toward me. I ran down. The north block door was chained
01:11and padlocked. It had not been opened in years, but the old gym doors stood ajar, my flashlight being
01:17across the dark court. Every chair from the bleachers had been dragged into a perfect circle
01:22at center court, all of them facing one empty chair in the middle. That is when the bell rang the
01:28third
01:28time, right above me. I remembered the old guard's rule, do not answer the third ring. I ran back to
01:34the security office and locked the door behind me. Camera 12 showed the classroom across the courtyard,
01:40and one chair pulled out, facing the camera. As I watched, that chair turned slowly, as if someone
01:46had just stood up and walked towards the lens. Then the picture changed. A man in a security uniform
01:52stood at the front of the room with his back to me. He raised one hand and waved the camera
01:57in.
01:57Come here. Then he turned around. It was me, my own face. And behind him, where no bell hung at
02:04all,
02:04the brass bell rang anyway. Its rope coiled, tied off, dry rotted in its knot. I killed the monitors
02:12and sat in the dark until six. At dawn, I walked out and never went back. The old guard calls
02:18me
02:18sometimes. He asks if I've heard the bell. I hang up. But some nights, at 2.13, my phone buzzes
02:24with a
02:25message from a number that is not a number, just six digits, like a classroom door. I never open it,
02:31because I remember the rule. You never answer the third bell.
