In the aftermath of the great fire, homes are destroyed and families separated. Our animals must find new ways to survive in an unrecognisable and inhospitable landscape.

00:10Many tales have been told of Africa, but this is our story.
00:21A drama set in the heart of our world, experienced as we live and breathe it.
00:33Our world is changing, our lives are in danger, but we still have each other, and family is
00:50something worth fighting for.
00:54This is the next chapter in our story, in a place they call Serengeti.
01:00Serengeti.
01:04Serengeti.
01:07Serengeti.
01:29Serengeti.
01:31Serengeti.
01:32Our land was born of fire.
01:35It formed the grasslands that brought life to these plains.
01:40But what fire creates, it also destroys.
01:55The world beyond has unleashed a firestorm.
02:01What once gave shelter, now brings death.
02:08Bakari and his troop escape the copy.
02:14But escape to where?
02:20Surrounded by fire, Bakari does the only thing he can.
02:25Runs towards the flames.
02:34Somehow, he must find a way through.
02:43It's now or never.
03:00They make it, but what now?
03:10The mongoose too flee for their lives, deep into their underground shelter.
03:31All around, homes are turned to ash.
03:36For Kali and her cubs, it's too late to leave the copy.
03:48Higher and higher they climb.
03:58Kali at last finds refuge.
04:03But will the cave become a trap?
04:15The inferno is merciless.
04:21And some must face it alone.
04:35The ostrich stayed at his nest until he could bear the heat no more.
04:51He's now separated from his partner by a wall of flames.
05:08Little is spared.
05:21Where there's adversity, some find opportunity.
05:30Storks feast on the life that flees the flames.
05:40Those that survive face a land transformed.
05:59It's the time when true leaders are put to the test.
06:08Bakari must find his troop a new home.
06:14All around is loss.
06:20The air, hard to breathe.
06:29But thanks to Bakari, all his troops survived.
06:36Not all were so lucky.
06:48Among the ashes, a reminder of battles past.
07:02A stranger from another troop.
07:13Obakari's banished rival.
07:29Young males harbor their own ambitions.
07:48As one rivalry dies, another is born.
08:00The young male has lost an ally.
08:12He makes his feelings clear.
08:19For now, an impertinence Bakari chooses to ignore.
08:31But descent ignored is descent that smoulders.
08:44Some are still fighting just to stay alive.
08:49Their grazing grounds have turned to ash.
08:54Gnu joins the quest for fresh pasture.
09:00As the fire.
09:02As the fire still finds grass to burn.
09:24As the fire still finds grass to burn.
09:27As the fire still finds a sound.
09:35As the fire Hill leader are ripe as for clogging Micheans wide.
09:41As the fire still removal.
09:44When a fire preventing them in a sea, nobody can do anything.
09:50As they can accept your fire.
09:54But he's now swimming blind.
10:01And the river is wide.
10:10But could the smoke be a blessing in disguise?
10:26It keeps the crocodiles at bay.
10:31And so Gnu survives.
10:38The river is now a firebreak as the great exodus continues.
10:52No one is untouched by the devastation.
11:05As ever, fate decides who dies and who thrives.
11:35Asghari survived by staying close to Kali.
11:42The cave she found saved both him and her sister.
11:49Now he must find the rest of his pride.
11:56Kali won't be joining him.
11:59Her cubs still need the sanctuary the Kopi provides.
12:04And that's not all.
12:12Her sister has given birth.
12:22Her cub needs constant attention.
12:30It's still blind and helpless.
12:50Whatever the age, a cub's curiosity can betray them.
12:59Even those who are yet to see.
13:05A Puffader displaced by the fire.
13:10Ssssss.
13:13Ssss.
13:19Ssss.
13:21Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
13:48Her mother takes her to the safety of the den.
13:53But in a world so changed, they'll need the protection of the pride.
13:59Kali calls for help, but there's no promise her roars will be heard.
14:14They vanish into the desolation like the dying embers of the fire.
14:22Her pride is now too far away.
14:27With a new home to offer sanctuary.
14:36And little cause to look back.
14:47With everyone dispossessed, finding food is the main preoccupation.
14:57Just knowing where to look is hard enough.
15:03Bakari should lead.
15:05But like the giraffes, he has no idea where to.
15:09What do you do?
15:11What do you do?
15:12What do you do?
15:17What do you do?
15:19What do you do?
15:20What do you do?
15:25What do you do?
15:25What do you do?
15:25What do you do?
15:26What do you do?
15:26What do you do?
15:26What do you do?
15:27What do you do?
15:28What do you do?
15:28What do you do?
15:31What do you do?
15:37What do you do?
15:39is a mutinous troop.
15:47To keep them on side, Bakari must be resourceful.
15:55Despite the scorched earth, tubers can still be found underground.
16:05But emergency rations are no one's favourite.
16:13And there's hope of a far more nourishing meal.
16:21The ostrich couple could be the clue he needs.
16:32After the fire, they were reunited, but their nest was lost to the flames.
16:45But an egg that's been cooked is a treat like no other.
16:54If, of course, you know how to crack it.
17:02For Ntoto, a second chance to try his luck.
17:12If he isn't chased this time.
17:25But what use is an egg if it can't be opened?
17:36It's a puzzle even for wise Bakari.
17:49But heat has weakened the shell, and serendipity can beat the greatest minds.
18:07Bakari's popularity is soon rising once more.
18:27But it would be unwise for them to raise their hopes.
18:32When food is scarce, leaders must keep their strength up, despite what others might feel.
18:54Resentment soon grows.
19:05Resentment soon grows.
19:13This is insubordination, something Bakari can no longer ignore.
19:31His threats are enough.
19:37But they won't be forever.
19:46Despite the hardships, there's good news for Kali and her sister.
19:54The copy has kept Kali and her cubs well fed and protected.
20:04And her sister's family has tripled in size.
20:13Kali's cubs have yet to be allowed to meet them.
20:16The babies are far too young for such rough and tumble.
20:22Her cubs will just have to bide their time.
20:35Askari is now far away, but still alone, without his pride.
20:54But kinship is a powerful bond, and lions have ways of finding each other.
21:04His brother has been searching too.
21:18Their reunion sweeter for their time apart.
21:23Their reunion sweeter for their time apart.
21:29Friend has become his servant as a son of realize this is a size of piling.
21:51lautبي
22:04For the baboons, the bonds between them are more easily broken.
22:17Bakari must suppress any descent in the ranks.
22:23But conditions are only getting worse.
22:32It's the young who suffer the most.
22:38But help is on its way.
22:43Ntoto brings comfort.
22:52And Cheka is always ready to provide a free ride.
23:00The quarrelsome males aren't so easily pacified.
23:08There's only one thing that will quell the unease.
23:22The thing we all crave.
23:26A home.
23:37If only it was that simple.
23:50A tawny eagle.
23:59A forewarning, perhaps, of what's to come.
24:18A sign the troop will ignore.
24:31For now, the copy shows promise.
24:52Better still, it may have water.
25:07But water?
25:09Not as Bakari knows it.
25:19All are nervous to try.
25:28A chance for Bakari to show leadership.
25:39Before someone else does work.
25:44Before someone else does work.
25:46Before someone else does work.
25:56Widenwood makes more attractive.
26:02Checker follows his lead.
26:06Then everyone else takes their turn.
26:25But Bakari still has work to do
26:29to ensure his troop is safe.
26:37A leopard is not a good sign.
26:46Baboons are a favourite meal.
26:58But today, this leopard has a far greater need.
27:10Nzuri was separated from her family by the fire.
27:13She, too, has joined the dispossessed.
27:26Among them is a pangolin.
27:33With nowhere to hide, she must rely on her armour.
27:41And it works.
27:54For Nzuri, the search for her family goes on.
28:03While others fled or perished, the mongoose survived deep in their burrows.
28:10They emerged to a devastated land.
28:15As they face its challenges, each must play their part, including Utani.
28:28He's still on babysitting duties.
28:39And the pup is still learning by example.
29:10While everyone's engrossed,
29:13But an enemy can advance unseen.
29:19Without her mother, Nzuri is desperate.
29:23Mongoose are a last resort.
29:53A leopard is a
30:11All made it back safely.
30:15Otani only just.
30:43Bakari's troops are settling into their new home.
30:58He's quelled the uprising and regained respect.
31:04But where there's peace, trouble stirs.
31:11When the troop arrived, the eagles delivered a warning.
31:18They won't warn twice.
31:28And a baby makes an easy meal.
31:39If Untoto wasn't watching out for her, once more Bakari must deal with the threat.
32:10Surprise is key.
32:30And persistence pays.
32:54Just one left.
33:05With the eagles vanquished, the troop are safe to join Bakari.
33:18He's not only dealt with the eagles, he's delivered everyone a meal.
33:33With food enough for a hungry troop, there's no better way to regain their loyalty.
33:51While the baboons enjoy the feast, Nzuri is still struggling to feed herself.
33:57She needs something substantial.
34:12A warthog would last her for days.
34:16A warthog would last her for days.
34:48She's still learning, but with no one to help.
35:06Far away, Nzuri's mother and her sister Dada are searching for her.
35:16Time has passed since the fire came between them.
35:20Time has passed since the fire came between them.
35:32Time has passed since the fire came between them.
35:39But still, they search on.
35:53For the baboons, the fig tree now provides a feast for all.
36:00A rich reward after days in the parched wilderness.
36:20While everyone's preoccupied, the baby is tempted by a new adventure.
36:41It's not a good time for the baboons to let their guard down.
36:53This time, the eagles have come in force.
37:08What chance does a baby have, especially one alone?
37:17Bakari is distracted, fighting a losing batter.
37:24Only Ntoto has noticed.
37:38Against the odds, Bakari keeps up the pressure.
37:44But more reinforcements keep arriving.
37:50Ntoto does his best to stay on guard.
38:08He's injured, but it could have been worse.
38:16Here, friends stick together.
38:19In pleasure and in pain.
38:38The sheer numbers are overwhelming.
38:44For Bakari, it's a choice that comes from having no choice.
39:09They are cast into the wilderness once more.
39:18And their world is getting bleaker.
39:41But even in the darkest of times, there's hope.
39:57There's hope.
40:00There's hope.
40:01There's hope.
40:04There's hope.
40:05There's hope.
40:10There's hope.
40:11There's hope.
40:28There's hope.
40:29With the rains comes the promise of renewal.
40:46And with it, the greening of our land.
41:04The lost find a fresh place to belong.
41:14And for many, the best of grazing too.
41:29For the mongoose, life returns to normal.
41:38And Uttani's caring duties resume in earnest.
41:47Today, his pup is being taken to meet the locals.
41:56But she's more excited to be back with Uttani.
42:04It's a relationship all mongoose must learn.
42:12Because warthogs make good neighbours.
42:18They even come bearing gifts.
42:27Hidden in their hair are tasty ticks and fleas.
42:37It's just a matter of finding them.
42:41And knowing when to retreat.
42:51Where there's one warthog, there's many.
43:03More than enough to feed everyone.
43:23Even babies are welcome.
43:29But purely at their own risk.
43:41Uttani made a mistake.
43:42But that's often all it takes.
43:54No babysitter is perfect.
44:04And in the baby's eyes, Uttani can still do no wrong.
44:19For all of us, bringing up young is never easy.
44:27And lion cubs are more troublesome than most.
44:33For the first time, Carly's sister is letting their cubs play together.
44:42Despite the difference in size.
45:04Their mothers do their best to keep order.
45:08But it's an endless struggle.
45:13In fact, it's hopeless.
45:23Oh!
45:25Oh!
45:29Yeah.
45:47There's only one thing for it.
45:52They need a distraction.
46:05Carly takes them hunting in the freshly greened land,
46:10leaving her sister and cubs in peace.
46:25Despite the rains, Bakari is struggling to find food once more.
46:32The rewards of the deluge are yet to grow.
46:39Then, the sweetest of sounds.
46:53A treat that comes with a sting in its tail.
46:57Ha!
47:00Ha!
47:03Ha!
47:09Ha!
47:22Ha!
47:26Ha!
47:30Ntoto follows his father's lead, but Ntoto lacks
47:54the thick coat of Bakari, and bees also go for the eyes.
48:10For Bakari, winning the comb was worth the agony, but he's not about to share it with
48:20anyone else.
48:32All the while, one of the disgruntled males has been watching.
48:48He's getting bolder by the day.
48:55He's not the only one.
48:58Bakari's facing insurrection even from those who once feared him.
49:16And they're growing in confidence.
49:26It's a rebellion that takes Bakari by surprise, but he's still stronger than all of them.
49:46And while he was fighting, he missed what was in front of him.
49:50The very thing that could defuse the tensions.
50:02Somewhere they could make their home.
50:12Nzori is still searching for her family.
50:20But first, she must eat.
50:26And she's beginning to get her eye in.
50:29BIRDS CHIRP
50:32BIRDS CHIRP
50:44Which means you can watch?
51:03BIRDS CHIRP
51:13Maple
52:03Despite her best efforts, she isn't yet ready to face the world alone.
52:14And now, she won't need to.
52:19Her mother and sister need search no more.
52:34They'll be making the most of every moment.
52:52Her mother and sister need search no more.
53:26Together again, savouring what's left of their youth until independence beckons for all.
53:40Here, a new start can mean realising what matters most.
53:47Have the baboons finally found home?
53:53It's rarely that simple.
54:04A sound Bakari knows only too well.
54:13And a mother all too close.
54:25Their new copy is already occupied.
54:41Carly's sister is firmly in residence.
54:50And she's not about to share.
55:08Especially with cubs in need of shelter.
55:17She calls for her sister.
55:25But Carly is still out hunting.
55:32It's been a long walk to the herds.
55:36Even longer for the cubs.
55:50But now they've arrived, the herds are here for the taking.
56:05Trapped in a bend in the river, their prey swirl around them.
56:17The herds act as one, creating a spiral of confusion.
56:39It's not a time for cubs to be alone.
56:54Everything is disappearing into dust and chaos.
56:58It's not a time for cubs to be alone.
57:03It's not a time for cubs.
57:07So too is their mother.
57:20The cubs are lost, alone, and vanishing from view.
57:26How can they ever be saved?
57:33You can watch all episodes of Serengeti 3 on BBC iPlayer.
