Most of the oxygen you're breathing right now didn't come from trees, it came from the ocean. Tiny drifting plankton called phytoplankton in the sea makes about 50-80% of Earth's oxygen through photosynthesis. In this 60-second educational video, we explain how the ocean is the real lung of our planet.

00:00Take a breath. Most of the oxygen you just inhaled didn't come from trees. It came from the ocean.
00:09We all picture forests as the lungs of the planet, but the real lungs are invisible.
00:16Drifting at the surface of every ocean are trillions of microscopic organisms called
00:22phytoplankton, tiny floating plants smaller than you can see. And they are busy. Just like trees,
00:30they use sunlight to photosynthesize. They soak up carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
00:36So much oxygen that scientists estimate they produce 50 to 80% of all the oxygen on Earth.
00:44Every second breath you take is thanks to them. The forests matter, but next time you breathe in,
00:52thank the ocean. The tiniest life on our planet makes most of our air.
