00:00Lovely to see you all. Hello, everybody. Hello, hello.
00:03You're all so welcome to the show.
00:06Thank you very much. That's very kind of you.
00:08We've got a great line-up tonight.
00:10I've got almost as many stars as celebrity traitors.
00:13And I promise not to murder any of them.
00:16That sounds a thing.
00:17Hey, singing for us later, look over there, it's Blossoms.
00:22They're performing the track Husband from their latest album.
00:25But first on my show tonight,
00:27this Tony and Golden Globe-winning star of stage and screen
00:29has played everything from an aspiring composer in Tick-Tick Boom
00:33to a betrayed Facebook founder in The Social Network
00:36and The Amazing Spider-Man in, now, The Amazing Spider-Man.
00:39Now, he stars the revolting peasant in Paul Greengrass' epic The Uprising.
00:44Please welcome Andrew Garfield!
00:49There he is!
00:52He's a very short man.
00:54Very short.
00:55Thank you so much for that.
00:56Great.
00:58This Welsh show will give a household name
01:00in The Darling Birds of May,
01:02going on to an Oscar-winning career
01:04starring in Chicago, The Mask of Zorro,
01:06and most recently as Morticia Adams in Wednesday.
01:10Now, she's going back to her Welsh roots
01:12in the action series Kill Jackie.
01:14It's Catherine Zeta-Jones!
01:18Yay!
01:20Woo!
01:22Hello!
01:23So good to see you!
01:24Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:25Get in, get in, get in!
01:27Go!
01:32And, unbelievably, it is 50 years since this man first stepped into the boxing ring as Rocky Balboa,
01:39starting a career as one of Hollywood's greatest action heroes.
01:43His new memoir, The Steps, tells the fascinating story of his rise to superstardom.
01:47It is such a pleasure to welcome the great Sylvester Stallone!
01:57APPLAUSE
01:58You're here!
01:59So good to see you!
02:07Have a seat, everybody!
02:10Sit yourselves down!
02:12You're all so welcome to the show.
02:14Lovely to see you all!
02:16Sylvester Stallone, presumably you have met everyone in show business.
02:19Have you met Catherine and Andrew before?
02:21You know what? Remind me. Did we ever, like, sort of pass by, or no?
02:26What is this?
02:27She's looking at her like, I never...
02:29Well, let me tell you something.
02:31And if you can't remember, I'm not upset at all.
02:35But...
02:35No, it's not about that.
02:39No, no, no!
02:41I had the pleasure of screen testing with you personally
02:47for Judge Dredd, and I didn't get the role.
02:50Excuse me. Wait, wait a minute.
02:52No, no, no, I did.
02:54No, but now I have Alzheimer's.
02:56No!
02:57On your show!
02:58It was one of those moments where, well, usually you never get to meet the star, you know?
03:04But I was shortlisted, and I was at the studio, and I was screen testing, and you were there.
03:11And I have to say, it was one of the best.
03:14I was so starstruck, that's probably why I didn't get the role.
03:19But it was one of those wonderful moments where, it's happened to be three times.
03:24With you I screen test, and with Harrison Ford, I didn't get that one.
03:28But I did with Sean Connery.
03:29All right!
03:30There you go!
03:32It's a win-win situation.
03:34It's a win-win situation.
03:34It's all win.
03:35Win-win.
03:37And Sylvester's own, have you screen tested Andrew Garfield for a second?
03:40Yeah.
03:41We remember.
03:42Yes, it was Judge Dredd, you didn't get it.
03:44Yeah, I didn't get it.
03:45But I was too nervous.
03:47And for Cliffhanger, and for Demolition Man, and for Rocky and Creed.
03:51Baby Rocky.
03:52Yeah, all of them.
03:55That's so good.
03:55And now, Catherine and Andrew, have you met?
03:57No.
03:57We haven't until just now.
03:59Okay.
04:00And we're doing great, I think.
04:01Yeah.
04:03But now, I believe, Andrew, because you're so on it, you've done some research.
04:08So, I was so overwhelmed by the idea of being on the couch with two legends tonight, genuinely.
04:15I brushed up on my history with you both.
04:18And something I discovered that I didn't know is that the first two musicals you did when you were younger,
04:24the first two musicals I did when I was just starting out as well, 16, 17, Bugsy Malone and then
04:2842nd Street.
04:29You're joking.
04:30And that's very strange.
04:31Yeah.
04:32That is odd.
04:33I played Fat Sam, quite ironically.
04:35Yeah.
04:36But I was very happy.
04:37I was Tallulah.
04:38Of course you fucking were.
04:42What are the odds of that?
04:44And then 42nd Street.
04:45And then 42nd Street.
04:46I played for two years here in London.
04:48And you were the understudy and then you...
04:50Oh, yeah.
04:51Is that right?
04:52You were second understudy.
04:53I was second understudy.
04:54This is an amazing showbiz story.
04:55You like this like.
04:57Yeah.
04:58So, I was in the chorus.
04:59I was 17 years old.
05:01And I was second understudy within three months of me being, you know, in the show.
05:07Second understudies rarely get on, you know.
05:10But this particular week, the lead actress was on holiday.
05:16The first understudy had hurt her knee and I was thrown on.
05:19And it just happened that David Merrick, the show's producer, the old, you know, Broadway producer, was in the audience
05:27looking at his shows and cast me in the lead role when I was 17 for two years.
05:33But the story of 42nd Street is the star breaks her foot and the chorus girl gets thrown on.
05:42So, it was one of those that happened to me.
05:45It was a true life thing.
05:45You know, we have something in common.
05:47You said David Merrick was the producer?
05:49I delivered sandwiches to him when I was working in the door.
05:53For real.
05:56Wow.
05:57I swear to God.
05:58I actually wrote a short play about it.
06:01Yeah.
06:01That's terrible.
06:02That's amazing.
06:03I'm telling you.
06:04Oh, I've got to take advantage of this.
06:06And was that one of those things where you were delivering sandwiches where you were kind of like lingering in
06:10the office so in case somebody sponsored you?
06:12Like laying across the doorstep.
06:14No, this was like a big deal.
06:17Because, you know, the actor, you know, they come up and said the purgatory that actors have to go through,
06:25it's really endless.
06:27It's really amazing what actors have to go through.
06:30Seriously, like the chances of a guy or woman getting discovered or having a long career is 98% against.
06:40Think about that.
06:42Like, you have more of a chance of walking on the moon without a helmet.
06:46LAUGHTER
06:46So, you take advantage.
06:48You see David Merrick, you're like, hey.
06:52LAUGHTER
06:52LAUGHTER
06:57That's really funny.
07:01Talking of show business, Andrew, your hair, beautiful, by the way.
07:06I love it.
07:06Beautiful.
07:07I love it.
07:10But it's for, it's for, you are making a great showbiz story.
07:14I wanted to ask you guys about, I'm playing Roy Horn of Siegfried and Roy.
07:18I knew him.
07:19Of course, yeah.
07:21I met him.
07:21I want to know the story.
07:22So, I'm playing Roy and it was for, it's an Apple show.
07:26Jude Law is playing Siegfried and it's fantastic.
07:28Oh, my God.
07:29And it's like seven parts.
07:30And, yeah, I grew it out because he had this long, luscious hair and then we ended up just putting
07:34a wig of the exact same.
07:36LAUGHTER
07:37Because we go throughout the decades and there's lots of different, he changed his hair a lot.
07:41It was crazy.
07:42Right, right.
07:42I met them.
07:43Crazy.
07:43I could never believe that these German guys ended up on this huge show in Vegas, like the biggest show,
07:50with all those tigers and the illusion.
07:52Yeah.
07:52It was the craziest thing.
07:53I went backstage to meet them once.
07:55Yeah.
07:55And did you, did you know them know them, Sylvester?
07:57Like the David Merrick story?
07:59Yeah.
07:59I happen to have that.
08:00Of course you do.
08:01Come on, Sly, come on.
08:02So, I just finished like Rocky 2 and they invited me to the show and I'm there.
08:06They said, come on up to the apartment between shows.
08:08I said, yeah, sure, and I'm up there and, you know, I'm, oh my God, excuse me, do you have
08:13a men's room?
08:14And I go, of course, just through the bedroom and there it is.
08:17So I go, ciao.
08:19Oh boy.
08:19I walk in and there's a friggin' white tiger.
08:24Now, you ever hear a tiger breathe? It is like, yeah, it's...
08:29And it yawns.
08:31And I see his teeth.
08:32Guess what?
08:33The bathroom disappeared.
08:35All of a sudden, everything went back into my system.
08:38Yeah.
08:40We are.
08:45Very good.
08:46Listen, let's get started.
08:48Sylvester Stallone comes tonight not as a movie star, but as an author.
08:52His new memoir is called The Steps.
08:54I've got a copy of it here.
08:56It is out now.
08:58And so the idea is this covers a really specific part of your life.
09:02It does.
09:03Again, it's like the performer's journey, which is always quite original and different.
09:10It's that kind of a thing.
09:11So I thought, you know, what am I sticking around for?
09:15I mean, if I don't pass it on, like the experience to perhaps up and coming artists,
09:20like this is what you need to go through, at least what I went through to achieve my goal.
09:25So I wanted to put it on the page.
09:27And as I was saying to you, like a lot of this story, only you know.
09:30Oh, yeah.
09:31Only you know.
09:32I mean, so, you know, and people often have that thing.
09:35Oh, we were born, we were poor when we were kids.
09:38Right, right.
09:38And you were really poor when you were kids.
09:39It was pretty bad.
09:40Yeah, it was.
09:41It was like really bad.
09:42Yeah.
09:43But I really think that all contributes to it.
09:46It was a tough upbringing.
09:47I used to go, oh, woe is me.
09:49But when I think about it, that's what you draw on.
09:53Yeah.
09:53Like if everything, oh, he was born in Beverly Hills and he had a Rolls Royce when he was 16.
09:59You know, it's kind of hard to conjure up that.
10:01Yeah.
10:02And before you get to the writing and performing, there are some interesting diversions along the way.
10:09So you weren't doing well in school.
10:11No.
10:11So what did they suggest you do then?
10:14Do you remember this?
10:16No.
10:17It seems unlikely now, but you went to beauty school, didn't you?
10:20Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:22My father was a beautician, which hands is big, like five bananas connected with foam.
10:28I don't know how he became a beautician.
10:30So he goes, hey, you're a moron.
10:33Why don't you get a job?
10:35Why don't you get a moron with me?
10:37You know, that kind of thing.
10:38And I couldn't.
10:40So I go to beauty school, and it's interesting because everyone in beauty school is literally
10:46at the last rung of society.
10:48They're desperate.
10:49It's like, oh, yeah, I'm nine months pregnant.
10:52I've just got to have a Hell's Angel again.
10:53It's a very different group.
10:56They're not like, hey, healthy people, they're weird.
10:59Because after the pin curls and everything during the day, at night, they get a little
11:06loaded.
11:07Can I shave your head?
11:08You know, why don't you have a green eyebrow?
11:10They just do that stuff.
11:13Metallic rinses.
11:14And I go, you know, I think I'm not really cut out for this.
11:17Only because I had no gifted hands, but that was it for a while.
11:21Listen, there's so many stories in the book, and we've got to, you know, if you want to
11:24hear all the stories, buy the book.
11:26But you end up in New York, and you're trying to be discovered, you're writing screenplays.
11:31You end up writing the screenplay that everybody wants.
11:34Rocky.
11:35Yeah.
11:35But everyone wants it, but you...
11:37I know.
11:40But...
11:42But...
11:44And this is...
11:46This is where...
11:47This is where it takes on a kind of a sort of showbiz myth quality.
11:51Yeah.
11:51So everyone wants to buy a screenplay, you would think already, great, I'm successful.
11:56But you have one condition.
11:57I wanted to play Rocky, and they went over a dead body, really.
12:01And I totally understand that.
12:03I was as green as they get.
12:05I wasn't like a leading man.
12:06I had very little acumen about the process.
12:10How old were you, Louis?
12:11Um, probably...
12:12Well, actually, as you know, there's kind of a cut-off point to make it in Hollywood.
12:18Like, usually, if you're not somewhere by the time you're 28, 29, it's kind of hard to make it in
12:23your 30s.
12:24Would you agree?
12:25Yeah, yeah.
12:25That's right, yeah.
12:25So I'm like 29 and three quarters.
12:27I'm right there.
12:29I'm telling you, at the tipping point.
12:31Yeah.
12:31So we're sitting there, and they go, no, no, we don't want you.
12:34And then this...
12:35And for some reason, that's why I think this is divine intervention, the price keeps going up.
12:41And they go...
12:42And then my agent go, don't be a moron.
12:44My lawyer's go, are you insane?
12:45So I got some 30, to 60, to 100, to 200, to 260.
12:52Now, I had...
12:53I didn't have a dime.
12:54And I have a wife who's pregnant, a dog that literally doesn't want to talk to me anymore.
12:59So I'm down, like, Jesus.
13:02I'd be a horrible guy to, you know...
13:04Take the money.
13:05Yeah.
13:06And it got up to some ridiculous height.
13:09And they go...
13:10And I'm literally...
13:10I had people screaming at me, like...
13:13So I got up to 360, which is, in that time...
13:16Wow.
13:17360 in 1976.
13:19I mean...
13:20Crazy.
13:20It was, like, two and a half million bucks.
13:21But, you know, I realized that I was never going to make it.
13:26There was...
13:27I was always going to be the thug, the third guy through the door.
13:30I was...
13:31I mugged Jack Lemmon.
13:33I mugged David Carradine.
13:34I mugged Woody Allen.
13:35Their handwriting was on the wall.
13:37OK?
13:39I thought I would have a Hugh Grant career.
13:41I go, nah.
13:42It's not happening.
13:42Rocky was one of those movies that you remember the first time you see it.
13:47You know?
13:47Oh, thank you.
13:47And it stays with you.
13:49There's very few movies that come around where you go...
13:53Remember the first time you screamed Adrian.
13:55You know?
13:56I remember I was...
13:57I was much younger than you.
13:59For sure.
14:00But, um, I remember being...
14:02Tears in my eyes going, she's there!
14:05You just...
14:05She's there!
14:06I know.
14:07It's...
14:07It's a formative film of our generation.
14:11And I guess it is a...
14:12Like, what you did...
14:13But wait...
14:14Was nuts.
14:15But wait, I need to know what happened.
14:16Because you were about to say...
14:18Because, like, what made you decide...
14:20Sorry, Graham.
14:21No, no, go!
14:22I'm so sorry.
14:23I'm just like...
14:24By the book, Andrew.
14:25Shut up.
14:29No, you were like, ask, ask.
14:33So I'm thinking that I'm taking everyone down with me.
14:37I mean, if...
14:38If they finally walk away, which I was expecting them to leave,
14:42I literally have blown everyone's life around me.
14:45I've taken everyone because of my ego or whatever it was.
14:48But I just knew that, you know, you make it just...
14:52It's just everything that you have.
14:54An actor, like, you know, your weaknesses, your strengths.
14:57So I try to put everything in there.
14:59And the fact that this is a broken-down guy.
15:03And there's, to me, nothing's worse in the world than being saddled with loneliness.
15:08Like, you, your entire life meant nothing.
15:12You've just taken up space until the next poor guy comes along.
15:17And I said, I'm never going to find this again.
15:18Mm-hmm.
15:19So I literally went out in the backyard.
15:21And I was, like, ranting at the guy.
15:24I said, give me some strengths.
15:25And I pounded in the ground.
15:26And I come back in.
15:28And my hand is killing me.
15:30And the phone rings.
15:31Mm-hmm.
15:32And, you know, yo, slut.
15:34You know, I made it.
15:35They go, how you doing, slut?
15:36It was the kind of...
15:37I had a guy from the Bronx.
15:39Hey, sit down.
15:40I go, yeah.
15:41He goes...
15:42I go, they left.
15:43They quit.
15:43They told me to F off.
15:44He goes, you got the part.
15:46You can play with walkie.
15:47And I went, oh, my God.
15:49And I literally went down.
15:52Like, down.
15:55It worked?
15:57Yeah, really.
15:58Hit the ground.
15:59And to say it worked out is an understatement.
16:01Because there you were.
16:02It won best picture at the Oscars.
16:04That's incredible.
16:05I mean...
16:08That doesn't mean...
16:10But, I mean, that happened.
16:12You know, that turnaround in your life is so fast,
16:14you must have been, like, dizzy the night at the Oscars.
16:17No, really dizzy.
16:18Actually, still.
16:19Is it weird to say that I'm, like, proud of you?
16:22It's like...
16:23It's so odd.
16:24I'm saying I'm like, I'm so proud of you.
16:26But it is...
16:27I mean, as actors, you know, it is that weird...
16:29You know, you take...
16:30You place a bet on yourself.
16:32Well, the knowing that you're talking about,
16:34like, against all odds,
16:35just like the fact that you had that voice saying,
16:37no, you've got to hold on.
16:39This is it.
16:39I know.
16:40You either cross that bridge or just die on it.
16:43Because there was no...
16:44Yeah.
16:44I mean, I was never going to make it.
16:46For sure.
16:47Yeah.
16:47There was no chance.
16:48It was like this or nothing.
16:49And that's why just the stars aligned and...
16:53A miracle.
16:54A miracle.
16:55And for you...
16:57Catherine, I mean...
16:59You know, that trajectory of, you know,
17:01being back in Wales doing youth theatre,
17:03and then there you are, at the Oscars,
17:07winning an Oscar for Chicago.
17:10Yes?
17:12I mean, that must be such...
17:14Like, just validation on an extraordinary scale.
17:17I think, like, as, you know, Sylvester said, you know,
17:21that we have an inherent...
17:22It's a dream big, you know?
17:24It's an inherent thing that actors have that,
17:26when they knock you down, they knock you down,
17:28you know, you like the...
17:30You just pounce back up and you say,
17:32come on, bring it on and take it again, because...
17:33Exactly.
17:34Because you're just so passionate about your craft.
17:37And so when that happened to me,
17:40the Oscars...
17:40I couldn't have...
17:41I couldn't...
17:42I didn't dream that big, you know?
17:44Right.
17:44But it was one of those...
17:45Again, everything was aligned.
17:47I was able to do singing and dancing
17:49in a great executed musical on celluloid,
17:54which, I mean, they're either really good
17:55or they're really bad, you know?
17:56Yeah.
17:57And really rare.
17:58Yeah, and rare.
17:59And it was a wonderful experience.
18:01And often, we might have a guest on the show
18:03who I can't talk to at this point
18:04because they haven't been to the Oscars,
18:05but happily...
18:06Oh, my God, you have been!
18:08You have been!
18:08I just remembered!
18:09You've also been!
18:09Yes, you have!
18:11Many times!
18:14And for you, it must be a lovely, lovely memory
18:18because you got to take your mum.
18:20I took my mum, yes.
18:21I took both my parents the first time I went
18:25for a film called Hacksaw Ridge
18:27and my dad was a...
18:33My dad worked in L.A.
18:35and he was obsessed.
18:37When he was younger, in his 20s,
18:39when he was raising me and my brother,
18:41we were living and working in L.A.
18:43and he had, like, a moving company in L.A.
18:46and he had a secret desire to be a screenwriter.
18:48He never followed that dream.
18:49We are the unmet dreams of our parents, I think, in some way.
18:53But he never really told me that until later in his life
18:55and he would tell me the story of driving past the Fox Lot
18:59and imagining,
19:00oh, what's going on in there?
19:01I want to be a part of that so much.
19:04And I had a surprise for him the night before
19:06because there's this night-before party
19:07that always happens at a specific place.
19:10And I said to my mum and dad, I was like,
19:12so there's a party I want to take you guys to
19:14and we're just driving through L.A.
19:16He's telling stories from every block and every corner.
19:18Well, this is where I moved that person, this is where I did that.
19:21And he was like, oh, we're coming up to the Fox Lot.
19:22I was like, yeah, tell the story about the Fox Lot
19:24and the blah, blah, blah.
19:25And we get to the Fox Lot and we turn in to the Fox Lot.
19:28Right, right.
19:28And the gates open and he's like, what's happening?
19:31I'm like, well, this is where the party is, Pops.
19:33And he just looks at me and he starts sobbing.
19:38It was so beautiful to be able to give him...
19:42Because he sacrificed so much for me and my brother
19:45to be able to have the lives that we have
19:48and to be able to give him back just a little bit of that.
19:50And then my mum got so drunk and she never drank.
19:55She wasn't a big drinker.
19:56She would have, like, half a glass of wine if she was anybody's.
19:59And she...
20:01Literally.
20:03A faithful woman.
20:04That night she happened to be Jack Black's.
20:07Jack Black...
20:09Jack Black just grabbed her.
20:11I don't know how it happened but they were dancing together
20:13on the dance floor.
20:14My dad was kind of there and I was kind of there
20:16but it was mostly her and Jack Black.
20:18And Jack Black was...
20:19So tell me, is it nature or is it nurture?
20:23Because you must be so proud of him.
20:25And she was a very demure, very retiring, shy Essex girl.
20:29My mum.
20:30She grabs Jack Black's lapels and goes,
20:32It's me.
20:33It was all me.
20:37Very good.
20:40Now, Catherine Zeta-Jones is coming home, everybody.
20:44Yes.
20:45She plays Jackie Price in the new crime series Kill Jackie.
20:49It's streaming on Prime Video from today.
20:53And it's so fun.
20:54I was like, you are so good in it.
20:56Before we get into it, let's have a little taste of Kill Jackie.
21:04Congratulations on the series.
21:09It's such a gift of a part.
21:12Tell us about Jackie Price.
21:13Well, I read a book.
21:15I was given a book by my producer.
21:17A 300-page book, which I read.
21:20And there's not one female character in it.
21:22And I was like, whoa, whoa, wait, wait, wait, wait.
21:24So Jack, it was called The Price You Pay.
21:27It's a marvellous book.
21:28But Jack we made into Jackie, who was living and made a lot of money
21:32in the dark underworld of the drug scene.
21:35Got very good at it.
21:37Got into dealing with art in a dubious way.
21:41Tax-free, free ports, in and out, Archie.
21:44And she thinks...
21:45And now someone is after her.
21:47There are seven demons after her.
21:48Seven psychopathic assassins are after her.
21:50And she thinks her past has come back to haunt her.
21:53So when I...
21:54This was early days, right?
21:55I just had the book and we started creating the scripts.
21:58And I had this epiphany.
21:59I woke up and I went, Jackie Price is Welsh.
22:05Jackie Price is not only Welsh, she's from Swansea.
22:09She's never been to the Mumbles.
22:11It's too posh down there.
22:13She's Welsh.
22:13So I told my producers, they were like, really Welsh?
22:16Huh, interesting.
22:18So anyway, she was Welsh in my head.
22:21And then once that clicked in, she became the part that...
22:26Yeah.
22:26Because it's crazy.
22:27I mean, it's high octane energy.
22:29Right.
22:30She's crazy.
22:31She's really crazy.
22:34And it was one of those parts where, you know, I'm 50...
22:39I just got my birthday in 57.
22:40To have that...
22:41No, you're not.
22:43Happy birthday.
22:43Yeah.
22:48Yeah.
22:49But to have that kind of role where I get to...
22:52The first time you see me, I knock someone out with a glass bowl
22:56and bite his ear off.
22:57It was...
22:58It was...
22:58It was satisfying to say the least.
23:01Yes.
23:02And also, you seem like you're having such fun in it.
23:04And I wonder, is part of that...
23:05Because is this the first time you've ever acted using your own accent?
23:10First time in my life.
23:11Wow.
23:12Isn't that mad?
23:12Well, actually...
23:13You can clap.
23:17Wales!
23:18Yes!
23:19Okay, okay, okay.
23:20Actually, I've done Dylan Thomas, you know.
23:22Oh, yeah.
23:23Tony Hopkins directed me in that.
23:24And then I just did another film with Anthony Hopkins called
23:27Visit to Grandpa, which is an adaptation of...
23:29That sort of movie.
23:31But before that, I'd never even...
23:34I'd never shot in Wales.
23:36Wow.
23:36I've shot all over the world.
23:37Malaysia, Australia, everywhere.
23:41But I've never even filmed in Wales.
23:44And going home, Graham...
23:46I'm going to cry.
23:47Going home was just so incredibly wonderful.
23:54To see people in the...
23:56You know, waving...
23:59Waving, you know...
23:59Wait a minute.
24:00Did you bring those?
24:01Yeah.
24:03I've never seen them before in my life.
24:04Sorry.
24:05Waving out of the windows, you know.
24:06Welcome home, Kath.
24:08What are you doing?
24:09How's you, ma'am?
24:10You know, it was really...
24:12It wasn't a full circle, because I'm just getting started again.
24:16But it was very, very fulfilling again.
24:19You talk about the fights, and they are extraordinary.
24:22Like, that...
24:22The ear-biting scene is amazing.
24:25So what was that?
24:26Presumably, you didn't actually bite them in the ear.
24:29No.
24:30No.
24:31But it was...
24:32It was really gross.
24:34I really have to...
24:34It was a piece of latex.
24:36You don't have to say anything you don't want to say.
24:37It was a lobe.
24:38It was a big piece of lobe.
24:41Latex.
24:42And then I had to drink this red...
24:45Very, you know, healthy, they said.
24:48Drink.
24:49Swish it around.
24:51And...
24:51I'll tell you something.
24:52I got...
24:53I'm really good at doing that stuff.
24:55The director said, hey, see the actor?
24:58Can you just spit the ear lobe, like, in that area?
25:02I went, yeah.
25:05All in one.
25:06Take after take after take after take.
25:09It was...
25:09It landed.
25:10And even I did a little roll, and I...
25:16Your...
25:16Your kind of big Hollywood break, The Mask of Zorro.
25:19Yeah.
25:20Were you doing all the sword fights?
25:22Would you...?
25:22Yes, that was.
25:24Bob Anderson was an Olympian, and we trained for three months.
25:28It was really quick, though.
25:29No, we didn't say it was three months.
25:31It was, like, three weeks we trained for.
25:33But we trained all the way through the six-month shoot.
25:35So when we got to the scene with Antonio Banderas.
25:38Yeah, I loved...
25:39I loved that.
25:40I was so lucky to be able to...
25:41That was, like, the big break for me in America.
25:43But does being a dancer make that easier?
25:45Yes.
25:45To learn those choreographed fights?
25:46It does.
25:46Because it's like love scenes and stunt scenes are like dancing.
25:50It's all choreographed.
25:52Yeah.
25:52It really is, yeah.
25:54I put my hand here, you put your hand here, or...
25:57I go there and...
25:59You know, it's all one of the same, really.
26:02Because in terms of, you know, fights and stunts,
26:04we had Tom Cruise on the show last week,
26:06who, you know, famously does all the stunts.
26:07But before, long before Tom, in Rambo, those big things...
26:12You were doing most of those stunts yourself, weren't you?
26:14Yeah, unfortunately, I did.
26:17I'm paying for it, trust me.
26:19Yeah.
26:20I tell you, don't do...
26:22Like, there is a morale, don't do your own stunts,
26:25because after you turn 60, you're going to grow a hump here,
26:28and your hand's going to curl up.
26:30It catches up to you, you know what I mean?
26:31Yeah, yeah, yeah.
26:32Because, you know, obviously, you were in great shape in Rocky.
26:35Yeah.
26:36But to see your body transform in Rambo,
26:38was that when you kind of pulled the ripcord
26:40and just decided to get...
26:41Yeah, you know, it's kind of a thing that you...
26:43Like, that's...
26:44Look at that, yeah.
26:45That's...
26:48He's a skinny bastard.
26:51Yeah, the...
26:52The thing is, why I took my shirt off,
26:55because you're getting burnt and bit and those things,
26:58you know, like...
26:58Guys don't run around like this in the jungle.
27:01You can't pull it up.
27:03So he's not too bright.
27:06That guy went to beauty school, for sure.
27:09That's a beautician.
27:14Right, let's move on because Andrew Garfield
27:16brings us an epic historical drama.
27:19It's called The Uprising.
27:20It's in cinemas from next Friday.
27:22That's October the 9th.
27:23And here is a taste of the trailer.
27:26The Uprising.
27:33It's an extraordinary story.
27:35My excuse is I grew up in Ireland,
27:38so I knew nothing about this story.
27:39Yeah, yeah.
27:40So tell us about the Peasants' Revolt
27:43and the part your character plays in.
27:45Yeah, just a quick history lesson.
27:46If you could.
27:47If you could.
27:47The year was.
27:48The year was, 1381.
27:50No, I think a lot of us learnt...
27:51A lot of English people, British people learnt it in school,
27:54but I think it was from the perspective of the people who won,
27:57which is like the king and John of Gaunt
28:00and the people that crushed the ordinary folk.
28:03So this is a story, and it's directed by Paul Greengrass,
28:06one of my favourite filmmakers of all time.
28:08I remember seeing you in 1993 when I was in drama school
28:11and I was, like, alone in my local cinema
28:13and I was screaming at the screen.
28:15He's a filmmaker that puts you right in the middle.
28:17He was a documentarian first,
28:19and now he's, you know, he's made Captain Phillips,
28:22the Bourne movies.
28:23Right, right.
28:23He's just an incredible, incredible filmmaker.
28:25So he's training his talents on this first popular uprising
28:31that happened in England in 1381,
28:32and it's a population that's coming out of the Black Death,
28:36which wiped out 50% of Europe,
28:40and taxes were being raised.
28:42There was a small group of very, very powerful people,
28:46oligarchs, that were controlling all of the wealth
28:48and all of the power and kind of hoarding it for themselves,
28:52and there was a huge gap between them and the common folk,
28:55and people's souls were getting squeezed
28:58to the point of saying that there's something deeply wrong.
29:02I'm not being treated with any dignity.
29:04I have no dignity left,
29:05so I'm going to fight to change the world.
29:08I'm going to fight to put the world in order,
29:09and it was a proper communal effort,
29:12and it was a very, very inspiring and complicated story,
29:16and it feels like it does have some kind of political,
29:21I don't know, mirror image reflection for the times we're in.
29:26I read the script, and it's hard to find scripts right now
29:29that feel like talk to the very confused,
29:33very, very difficult and disparate divided times we're in,
29:37and this felt like a bit of a cry of the soul,
29:39and I'm very excited to share it with people,
29:41but also it's kind of in the vein of a Braveheart or a gladiator.
29:46So there's kind of like an epic action sweep to it
29:49with big, epic feelings in the centre of it as well.
29:53And there are big set action pieces,
29:55big battles and things like that,
29:56but then there are quieter moments.
29:59I was very impressed by your ploughing.
30:02Because...
30:02No, you want to do real ploughing, and you're doing it.
30:05And honestly, I was watching and you think,
30:07that's a very straight line.
30:08That's very...
30:09That's...
30:09You know what I mean?
30:11Yeah.
30:11Because there are...
30:12There aren't many people to speak.
30:14It's a lost art.
30:15Yeah, it's a lot.
30:16Exactly.
30:17It's a lost art.
30:18It is a lost art.
30:19Yeah.
30:20It is a lost art.
30:20Even, like, it's so much of a lost art that I...
30:24I was working...
30:25See the rump of the ox there?
30:28Oh, yes.
30:28This is an ox called Prince.
30:31And he was a beautiful boy.
30:33He was a really good boy.
30:34And I worked with him for three weeks to just bond.
30:39Uh, and...
30:40Because, you know, I'm playing a character that's lost his wife,
30:43lost his...
30:43lost his kids,
30:44so, like, all he has left, really, is his ox.
30:47Um, and I'm...
30:48It's big and warm.
30:49Yeah, and honestly...
30:49And the ox was the...
30:51the main source of central heating at that time.
30:53The ox would sleep in the house with me during medieval time.
30:56Me.
30:56I'm an actor.
30:58I'm an actor wearing a watch.
31:00Like, what am I talking about?
31:01Um, it's not me.
31:02Um, I...
31:03But, anyway,
31:04I worked with the ox.
31:06We were ploughing every day for three weeks.
31:08He was pulling that straight line.
31:10He was really, a really good boy.
31:12He...
31:12I gave him a lot of hay and carrots.
31:14And he was...
31:14We had an amazing time.
31:16And there's something that happened on...
31:18when the cameras arrived,
31:20and it was time for him to just do the fucking ploughing.
31:24I think he...
31:25He kind of became cognizant of the fact
31:28that technology has evolved.
31:29I think he realised...
31:32Why am I ploughing?
31:34LAUGHTER
31:35It's 2025.
31:39You have machinery.
31:41LAUGHTER
31:43I...
31:43I'm a modern ox.
31:45I'm better than this.
31:46I'm not...
31:46I'm not...
31:47I'm not...
31:48I didn't...
31:48I didn't consent.
31:49Yeah.
31:50I didn't sign any contracts.
31:52It's the oxen revolt.
31:53A revolt of Prince.
31:55Yeah.
31:57And you're talking of farms and farm animals,
32:00of course, the...
32:01In this country,
32:02the thing that catapulted you to fame
32:05was the Darling Buds of May,
32:06which you must have had to work with...
32:08Yeah, I know.
32:09APPLAUSE
32:10You must have had to work with so many animals on that.
32:13Yeah, we did.
32:14We were down in a village called Pleckley in Kent,
32:19and we...
32:19And then we...
32:20And that host house, that farm,
32:21we spent months there.
32:22Yeah, we had everything, yeah.
32:24I was a horse lover,
32:25Mariette Larkin was, yeah,
32:26but we had these geese that were just nasty, man.
32:29LAUGHTER
32:30Geese are nasty.
32:32They chase you around
32:33and try and snap at your legs.
32:34They...
32:35They eat bulldogs.
32:36I mean, they're tougher than they look.
32:38LAUGHTER
32:38They look goofy?
32:39No, they'll take you behind the barn
32:41and beat the hell out of them.
32:42LAUGHTER
32:44Bonds, geese, ducks.
32:45We had serious issues with the geese, yeah.
32:47Yeah.
32:48A cameraman would drop the camera
32:49and go running off into the...
32:51LAUGHTER
32:51Into the Bluebell Woods.
32:53LAUGHTER
32:53And just to go back to the steps for a moment,
32:56the actual steps...
32:58No, no, there's a link to animals.
32:59The actual steps in Rocky,
33:01when you're playing with that.
33:02So that scene was supposed to be very different.
33:04It was quite different,
33:05because I...
33:06First of all,
33:07it was hard to get up them in the beginning,
33:08because we were jumping...
33:10We were stealing scenes.
33:11It was not in Union,
33:12and we had Union guys,
33:14coming after us.
33:15They eventually caught us
33:16and put sand in the generator,
33:18but it was right before they caught us.
33:20And I remember,
33:21I was there,
33:22I think it was 11, 12 years old,
33:23and these steps,
33:24they look like literally you're in heaven.
33:26So I said,
33:27OK, let's run here, run by a boat,
33:29run down the train tracks,
33:30let's go to the steps.
33:32So I go, OK, Rocky's getting strong now,
33:34I need something to demonstrate
33:36how powerful he's become.
33:38So I go,
33:39Bull Mastiff.
33:40Bull Mastiff's the size of your cow.
33:43Yeah.
33:43Yeah.
33:43It was literally like
33:45picking up another four-legged man.
33:48It was huge.
33:49So I go...
33:52Goddamn!
33:54Oh, my God!
33:55And like two steps,
33:56I go, is that a hernia,
33:57or is that a new muscle?
33:58That kind of thing.
33:59What's that bump coming from?
34:01And I thought,
34:02what would have been so dumb
34:03if it had worked,
34:04like running home with a dog?
34:06But the dog is bigger than me.
34:08I was reading about it,
34:09and I thought,
34:10well, he couldn't run up steps carrying a dog.
34:13And then I saw a picture of you and Butkus the dog.
34:17I mean,
34:18that is a lot of dogs.
34:19Like his paws, like, damn.
34:21Snowshoes.
34:22And was he your dog?
34:23Oh, yeah.
34:24What was his name?
34:24That's the one I had to sell.
34:26What was his name?
34:27Butkus,
34:28which is an interesting look.
34:30Butkus was a very famous football player
34:33who was terrifying.
34:34And he was legendary.
34:36Dick Butkus.
34:38So...
34:40You'd have to grow up to be terrifying.
34:43But I got to do it.
34:44So, I'm in Hollywood now,
34:47coming out of the Four Seasons Hotel,
34:49and there's this guy going,
34:51Hey!
34:53You think I look like a dog?
34:56Dick Butkus.
34:57It looks like him.
35:00And I said,
35:01only because it's so brave,
35:03and fearless,
35:03and ferocious,
35:04and then just,
35:06all right.
35:08You know what I mean?
35:09That size 12 head.
35:13I love that you put it in the football shirt.
35:15He had to plant me,
35:16right there,
35:16and I boom.
35:18No, he was.
35:19But of course,
35:20I don't know about you,
35:21but every time I have a great time on a movie,
35:24It's not so good.
35:25It bombs.
35:26Every time I'm miserable,
35:27like,
35:28I know that Chute was miserable.
35:30Yeah, it's tough.
35:31It's very tough.
35:32What he did, guys,
35:33outdoors,
35:34there's no hotels.
35:36Yeah, it's tough.
35:36It's miserable.
35:37Bugs.
35:38And that's the ones that are successful.
35:41Yeah.
35:42Yeah.
35:42Well, I hope you're having a horrible time tonight.
35:46Very good.
35:47It is cross.
35:48Very good.
35:50And right,
35:51it is time for music.
35:52Since first thing on the scene 10 years ago,
35:54this Brit-nominated stockport band
35:56have had four number one albums.
35:58Here performing husband from their new album,
36:00Songs from the Wedding Cake.
36:01Please welcome,
36:03Blossoms.
36:29I think I took the cure too, literally.
36:33When they said,
36:34Boys, don't cry.
36:35No, no, that's not me.
36:37Yeah.
36:38Make way for my confession.
36:39It's genetic, you see.
36:41I'm just like my old man.
36:43Not just the nose emotionally.
36:45Yeah, but I found my feet.
36:47Come back to me.
36:49I'm a hustler now.
36:53When all is clear.

37:08I'm in the hire car in Sicily.
37:12I think I said the wrong thing.
37:14Now I'm scrambling, yeah.
37:16And this bone of contention
37:18Has potential to be
37:19The thing that makes you wanna leave.
37:22But I want you.
37:23I need you.
37:24And I found my feet.
37:26Come back to me.
37:28I'm a hustler now.
37:31When all is clear.

37:37So come and get up with me.
37:42Come and get up with me.
37:46Come and get up with me.
37:50Come and get up with me.
37:53Come and get up with me.
37:55Come and get up with me.
37:58Come and get up with me.
38:01Come and get up with me.
38:02Come and get up with me.

38:52But you know we've got to work for it, baby
38:55I think you should know that I've found my feet
38:58Come back to me

39:58Welcome back
39:59There you go
40:00Andrew and Pat
40:01We're having Sylvester
40:02I'm in Sylvester
40:03Andrew and Pat
40:04We're having Sylvester
40:05There you go
40:07Good evening
40:07Cheers, thank you so much
40:08Lovely
40:09There you go
40:10Oh, yeah
40:10Come on
40:12You had to take the hand of greatness
40:14There you go
40:16Thank you so much for that
40:17Yeah, you've earned your drink
40:18Get it down you
40:19That was fantastic
40:20That is from the brand new album
40:23Which is out today
40:24Songs from the wedding cake
40:26There it is in vinyl
40:27Looking good
40:33Apart from providing you with some really cool artwork
40:37Why the name of the album?
40:39So a lot of the songs were about where I'm at in my life now
40:43A married man of 33
40:45Congratulations
40:45Yeah
40:46Thank you
40:47I don't know, I was writing songs
40:50Once you've got a few songs together
40:52You're then trying to find something to encapsulate the whole thing
40:55So I had a song called Joke About Divorce
40:59And then husband
41:01So I was like, okay
41:02There's a bit of a theme there, isn't there?
41:04Yeah
41:05So I was like
41:06It needs to kind of
41:07Something needs to sum that up
41:08And I liked the songs from idea in my head
41:11But I didn't have the
41:13Where's it from?
41:14And I got married at Stockport Town Hall
41:16And it's nickname
41:16Because it's a tiered kind of shape, isn't it?
41:19There you go
41:19Oh, there it is
41:20It's nickname is the wedding cake
41:21So that's why it's called songs from the wedding cake
41:23So it's technically songs from Stockport Town Hall
41:25Okay
41:26It's not as good though
41:28It sounds better
41:29I think you made the right choice
41:31I think it's the right choice
41:33But you guys, like
41:33You've taken the wedding theme quite seriously
41:36Very seriously, yeah
41:37So how many weddings have you performed at now?
41:39Yes, we crashed about
41:40Was it three?
41:41Yeah
41:42Yeah, we crashed three weddings
41:43In the back of a van
41:45Now
41:45Before, yeah, it was mine
41:46But people have asked you to do it
41:47There you go, the curtain side of the van
41:48Yeah, yeah, yeah
41:49People sort of like
41:50We asked people to write in if they'd like
41:51What was the play at the wedding
41:52Oh, that's wicked
41:53We sort of regretted doing it
41:54Because we had loads of emails
41:56I'm still getting it
41:57We're not doing any more, by the way
41:59It's not
41:59But what I love
42:00I love this picture
42:00Everyone is so loving
42:02The fact that
42:03Blossoms have shown up at the wedding
42:04Apart from that lady
42:08It was like going back to the old days
42:11And you're kind of looking out at the crowd
42:12And you're like
42:13That guy's really bored
42:14He's not bothered
42:15Do you know what I mean?
42:16But then by the end
42:17He's like
42:18He's got a cigar on
42:20He's vibing
42:21Yeah, yeah
42:21We won him over
42:22And in November
42:23You're going on tour
42:23And it's a bit bigger than that van
42:25It is, yeah
42:26Yeah, this is all arenas
42:28Yeah

42:50It's the same second name as me
42:51Can they have the carpet?

45:24I'm a retired teacher
45:25Okay, well off you go with your story
45:28So I have a real problem in mixing up phrases and mixing up words and things like that
45:34So back in the 90s when I was getting married myself and my husband had gone to the church to
45:38speak to the parish priest
45:41and we were talking about the music that we had to have and the classes that we needed before we
45:47got married etc
45:48Yes
45:49But the whole time I was looking at this priest he had a big black mark like dirt on his
45:54forehead
45:55So I'm looking at this priest and at the very end I say
45:58Father can I just tell you you've got a big black mark on your foreskin
46:05And my husband and his face is just went
46:09And I realised then what I'd done
46:12That was a very good story
46:13That was a very good story
