00:00Greetings friends!
00:02In this short segment we'll talk about a very unusual custom project that stirred up motorcycle
00:06communities a month ago.
00:09This is the Bestella 500 motorcycle created by Czech builder and enthusiast Marek Foltis.
00:15Let's take a closer look at this machine and for those who want to know all the details
00:19of how this marble was created, I'll leave a link to the official Bestella website and
00:24the creator's channel in the video description.
00:27There are plenty of notes and technical data there, enjoy watching!
00:49After two and a half years of engineering research in November 2021 Marek Foltis proudly presented
00:54his completed Bestella 500 project to the world, featuring a never-before-seen engine
00:59design.
01:01This is a two-stroke, ten-cylinder, twin radial engine with supercharging.
01:06Yes, there have been several examples of radial engines installed in motorcycle frames, Megola,
01:12for example, but a twin radial engine and with supercharging such a thing has never been seen
01:17in the motorcycle industry.
01:19By the way, the name Bestella literally translates as two-star, which fully reflects the concept
01:25of the engine.
01:26As Marek Foltis himself admits, the main goal he set for himself was to create his own engine,
01:32one that had never before been installed on a motorcycle.
01:36Moreover, the Czech chose a concept for which there are no templates.
01:39For example, if you decide to build your own inline-four engine, there are plenty of templates
01:44and formulas online.
01:45By entering your data into them, you can get the engine you need, without studying many
01:50chapters from physics, strength of materials and materials science.
01:54The second condition was to have as many cylinders as possible.
01:57The radial layout is the most compact, and two rows of cylinders reduce the engine diameter.
02:04Marek compared the sizes of designs with 8, 10 and 12 cylinders and chose the maximum number
02:10that would still fit in the motorcycle frame.
02:13Jawa Perak Type 18 from 1953, which was taken as the base.
02:20According to Czech regulations, in order to keep the motorcycle legal and allow it to be
02:25used on public roads, the frame, suspension and brakes must remain stock.
02:31That's why Foltis worked so meticulously on the layout and dimensions of the engine,
02:36to avoid interfering with the frame's design.
02:40He succeeded.
02:41The gap between the engine and the frame is about 1 mm, so it fits really tightly.
02:48The cylinders for the engine were borrowed from 50cc Jawa bikes, and the engine is boosted
02:54by five Rudd-type supercharger units.
02:56At the moment, the maximum power of the Bistella 500 is limited to 60 horsepower at 6,500 revolutions
03:03per minute in Newton.
03:04At the same time, the estimated power is 120 horsepower at 10,000 revolutions per minute.
03:11The estimated maximum speed is 220 kilometers per hour.
03:15Hour, however, the actual speed is about 120.
03:18Marek does not recommend testing the maximum speed of his machine, since the chassis, which
03:23comes from the first half of the 1950s, is clearly not designed for such heroics.
03:28And this masterpiece wasn't created for that anyway.
03:31Two and a half years of painstaking work were accompanied by both successes and failures,
03:36as well as solving a lot of technical problems and inconsistencies.
03:40The engine was made using a CNC machine.
03:43The gearbox housing, the gearbox itself, the clutch, cylinders and pistons were taken from
03:48Jawa motorcycles.
03:49Actually the same goes for the chassis, wheels, suspension and so on.
03:54The work on creating the octopus-like tubular intake and exhaust manifolds took a month.
04:00The painting was done by the master himself.
04:03And the gold lettering on the tank and side panels is real gold.
04:07Due to the supercharger's seizing, the engine cover would burst, bearings would get damaged
04:12and the bevel gear transferring drive from the crankshaft to the clutch shaft would also
04:16get damaged.
04:18The initial use of 5 carburetors per second supercharger did not lead to success, it was
04:23simply impossible to tune them.
04:26The design was revised to use an intake manifold with a single carburetor.
04:31Initially installing 10 CDI ignitions also turned out to be a failed idea.
04:35The issue was resolved by installing transistor ignition.
04:39And believe me, that's not the whole list of interesting events.
04:42The finished project looks and sounds like complete madness in the best sense of the word.
04:48The message that Marek Foltis wanted to convey through his motorcycle is as follows.
04:52I quote, I never gave up.
04:55Failure is inevitable, but not final.
04:57I stepped out of my comfort zone to pursue my dream with dedication.
05:02I worked on the project even when I was feeling unwell.
05:05Now the project is complete, the motorcycle runs smoothly and now I would like to share
05:11my experience with other people.
05:12For me it's not about building a motorcycle, but about overcoming our inner demons, self-doubt,
05:20fear and false excuses.
05:30With this, my story comes to an end.
05:33As a result, we have not only an incredibly beautiful and exotic Bestella 500 motorcycle,
05:38but also a very instructive and inspiring story.
05:41You've been watching CrossMoto.
05:43Let me remind you about the links to the Bestella project in the video description.
05:47See you next time.
