00:00Hidd, T Hidds, Tomo, Hiddles happens a lot, the Hiddster.
00:06Tom, hello my darling, so good to see you.
00:08How are you? Thank you for being here.
00:09Thank you for making amazing things like this.
00:12Pompeii was unbelievable.
00:13Oh, that's very kind of you, thank you.
00:15Your passion project is so beautiful.
00:16Yeah, it was a passion project.
00:18I was going to say, does anything make you as happy as Pompeii?
00:22That was a happy one.
00:23I mean, it was also time travel because we were going back in time, you know, 2,000 years.
00:29But it was time travel in my own life.
00:31I was going back to my 17-year-old self and I'm 45 now, so it feels like a while
00:37ago.
00:37But it was nice to reconnect with that passion.
00:39Having your mates there at the premiere was so, so lovely.
00:42Yes.
00:42Your friend.
00:43Nicknames, Mr. Amazing in this.
00:46It's a pretty good nickname.
00:47And he still uses it now, by the way.
00:48He does.
00:50Have you got one that your mates still call you or that you call yourself?
00:54Oh, I don't have a nickname.
00:56It's usually some variation of my last name.
01:00It's like Hidd, Hidd, sometimes it's Taz.
01:05I don't know where that came from.
01:07T-Hidds, Tomo, you know, pretty standard.
01:13No, it's always the H-I-D-D.
01:15Yeah, I love it.
01:16Never the end.
01:17That always gets...
01:17Hiddles is cute.
01:18Hiddles happens a lot.
01:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:20That sounds like a cat's name.
01:21Hidds.
01:21Anyway.
01:22The Hiddster, you know.
01:23I love the way that Edmund was passionate about this.
01:26But he also loved making honey.
01:27He did.
01:28Have you got something that switches you off that you like doing extracurricular outside
01:31of all this madness?
01:33I love walking the dog.
01:36But it's similar in a way to Hilary's passions.
01:40It's like I've always loved being outside.
01:44I love being in mountains and I love being in high mountains, but I also just love being
01:48in the park and being surrounded by nature.
01:53Even if it's like just an ordinary day in London and it's raining, you get a coffee and
01:58take the dog for a walk, do a loop.
02:01I think that's for me, just being plugged into the natural world is a very important part
02:07of the experience of being alive.
02:09So I do it as often as I can.
02:11I love that.
02:12So you've gone from filming on a mountain.
02:14Is it maybe a field next?
02:16A field?
02:17A field?
02:17It could be a field.
02:18Yeah.
02:20We could pitch it.
02:21Walked around a field.
02:22There's some great movies about dogs.
02:24Yes.
02:25There's some great movies about dogs.
02:26I've pitched new movies, unbelievable.
02:27I haven't seen that yet.
02:29Can you see yourself working with more pooches, animals?
02:32I'd love to work with a pooch.
02:33I'd love to.
02:33I've worked with horses.
02:35Horses.
02:36Have I worked with dogs?
02:37Snow.
02:38The ocean maybe is next.
02:40Okay.
02:40Do you think?
02:41Yeah.
02:41Maybe.
02:42You know what I'm going to say, don't you?
02:43Coming out the sea.
02:45A mermaid?
02:47Whatever next.
02:48And I had to ask you about friendships and relationships, bromance.
02:51What's so special about this story of these two guys?
02:55And what did it make you feel afterwards?
02:56Well, it is about, as you say, it's about friendship.
02:59And Hillary and Tenzing's friendship was extraordinary.
03:04They were two men from completely different lives, completely different corners of the planet,
03:09who both had a deep love for the mountains.
03:12And they felt at their most alive when folded into the landscape of the mountains and all
03:19of the awe and majesty that mountains inspire.
03:22And also the power of them.
03:24They are just like the deep ocean.
03:26It's a dangerous place and mountains deserve our respect.
03:30But the two of them together, the fact that they were bonded by this shared dream and supported
03:37by the expedition, it is amazing.
03:41They were up there at the highest heights.
03:43I mean, 29,000 feet, 8,800 plus meters, higher than any bird flies and the height of it cruising,
03:54737 or whatever.
03:57And they were tied by 10 feet of rope.
04:00And if either of them made a mistake, that was it for both of them.
04:04And so they felt that they shared the risks, they shared the challenges, they shared the success.
04:10And it was an achievement that was so joint.
04:14It was such a shared achievement.
04:16And they saved each other's lives.
04:18You faced, for us, the multiverse.
04:20Is this the toughest opponent you've faced so far, do you think, this mountain?
04:23Well, I don't think Everest is an opponent.
04:28Very well.
04:29And actually the film, in a way, is about that.
04:32Hillary said a beautiful thing at the end of it.
04:34He said, we didn't conquer the mountain.
04:37The mountain accepted us.
04:39Which is a slight sort of nuanced shift, you know.
04:44And maybe it was that attitude that allowed them to climb it.
04:48But it is, Everest is amazing.
04:50Gendon Pansok, who plays Tenzing and I, saw Everest at the same time, for the first time.
04:56Nothing can prepare you for the scale and magnificence of those high mountains.
05:02And particularly Everest.
05:04Just truly awe-inspiring.
05:07Breathtaking.
05:08Thank you very much, indeed.
05:08Incredible.
05:10I hope to see you coming out.
05:11See you soon.
05:12Who knows?
05:13Who knows?
05:14Who knows?
