No relief at the pump: EU diesel hits new record of €2.24 a litre

00:01The average price of diesel across the European Union has hit a record €2.24 per litre,
00:07up from €1.59 before the war in the Middle East.
00:12Twelve EU countries recorded new all-time highs, including Belgium, Italy, Romania and Poland.
00:19Diesel rose above €2.50 per litre in Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands,
00:24while Germany reached €2.44.
00:28Belgium also hit a record with diesel averaging €2.43 per litre.
00:33Across the block, prices increased due to taxes,
00:36which account for around 40% of the price paid at the pump.
00:41Prices have been driven higher by disruptions to energy supplies,
00:45including the effective closure of Strait of Hormuz,
00:48a Houthi blockade of Saudi exports in the Red Sea,
00:50and Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries.
