📰 THE FULL STORY

The US Supreme Court overturned a last-minute stay that had paused Tennessee's execution of Christa Pike, 50, the only woman on the state's death row. The decision cleared the way for the state's first execution of a woman in more than 200 years. Pike was set to die by lethal injection at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville for killing Colleen Slemmer in 1995, when Pike was 18.

The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals had voted 2 to 1 to issue a stay so Pike's allegations of childhood sexual abuse is reviewed. The Supreme Court's conservative majority vacated that stay in an order signed by Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Three liberal justices, Sotomayor, Kagan and Jackson, dissented. Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote that the decision prevented the 6th Circuit from giving due consideration to Pike's claim and allowed Tennessee to execute her before litigation over her conviction had run its course.

According to The Guardian, Tennessee officials were unable to carry out the execution despite administering two doses of pentobarbital. Media witnesses reported that Pike was heard snoring 40 minutes later. An ambulance arrived at the institution, and Pike's condition was unclear. Her attorneys filed an emergency motion to the Supreme Court saying she was in unnecessary agony and that the state violated her right against cruel and unusual punishment.

Tennessee's attorney general said halting the execution traumatized Slemmer's family and rewarded abusive delay tactics. The state proceeded with the execution ahead of a midnight cutoff. Slemmer's mother said she had waited decades to see the sentence carried out.

⬅️ HOW THE LEFT COVERS IT
The left frames the case around the dissenting liberal justices and the unresolved claims of childhood sexual abuse, foregrounding that the Court cleared the way to execute Pike before her pending legal challenges is properly considered. Coverage centers Pike's attorneys' argument that she was in unnecessary agony and that the state violated her right against cruel and unusual punishment after two doses of pentobarbital left her alive and snoring. The Guardian emphasizes the chaos at Riverbend, the arriving ambulance, and the emergency motion filed mid-execution. It foregrounds procedural failure and the dissent's warning while giving less weight to the victim's family's decades-long wait. (New York Times, The Guardian)
