Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) is working to make its advanced sustainable fuel (ASF) more cost-effective without compromising performance as Formula One prepares for further power-unit changes in 2027 and 2028.

PETRONAS Downstream EVP and CEO Datuk Seri Sazali Hamzah said its scientists were exploring ways to reduce costs, while Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 team principal Toto Wolff said the regulatory changes would require further development of the engine-and-fuel package. PETRONAS said its F1 partnership with Mercedes also helps it develop fuels, lubricants and other technologies for wider commercial use.

00:05How important is the technical partnership to the team's performance, especially with the use of ASR?
00:12What I wanted to say first, and it's also responding to your question, is that the partnership that we have
00:19amongst ourselves is testament.
00:23A blueprint of how good and successful relationships can be.
00:30You mentioned Petronas was on board since Mercedes has joined Formula 1 in 2010.
00:36If I think about the key stakeholders today in the team and the success, it's Petronas,
00:45it's the chassis side of Mercedes and it's the engine side of Mercedes.
00:50These are the key three hardware and IP providers.
00:57One cannot without the other.
00:59And when we look back at our success, I picked out the number a few days ago.
01:04We won more than 130 Grand Prix since we've partnered.
01:10We have the records in the most consecutive championship in that time.
01:15the record for championship overall over those last 20 years.
01:21The most pull positions, the most front row lockouts, the most fastest laps.
01:28And we're leading the championship this year with this groundbreaking new sustainable fuels.
01:41So, this is not that I want to praise ourselves, we agree.
01:44I want to praise you.
01:48Because we've always had the advantage on the fuel and loop size.
01:53And this year, the effort that has gone into the development, into the joint development, the obstacles we had to
02:03overcome.
02:04The many phone calls we had on a senior level.
02:08I'm sorry.
02:09With all of you here.
02:11And at the end, we came to Melbourne and we won.
02:16And what a relief it was.
02:17And also what a reward it was to have that together.
02:22And I cannot reiterate enough that this can only go in the partnership between Petronas and Mercedes.
02:27You can talk a lot about sponsors or you can talk a lot about other relationships.
02:31But this is not a sponsorship relationship.
02:33This is a technical partnership.
02:35This is an integrated works team between Petronas and Mercedes.
02:39And to come back to your question, sorry for elaborating a little bit more.
02:42This is the first time I can talk today.
02:44So, it is that we knew that the sustainable fuel component is going to make the winning difference this year.
02:55And the work that has been done is literally tremendous.
03:01And it's so important also for the messaging into the world.
03:06Energy transition is happening, whether you like EV or whether you like hybrid
03:11or whether combustion cars are going to, you know, still have a larger share in the future.
03:17Sustainable fuel is the way forward.
03:20You know, in Formula One we are talking about new engine regulations and V8s in the future
03:25and a smaller battery or a smaller turbo and let's reduce the weight.
03:30Sustainable fuel is out of question.
03:32That's continuing forever.
03:34And this is because we pushed it both so hard into organizations to make it so successful.
03:41100% sustainable and the most powerful fuel and engine combination ever done in the world.
03:49Okay, my question is that the FIA has a great changes to the power unit framework for next year and
03:562028.
03:57So, what technical license from the first session, first season under the 2026 regulation,
04:05prompted that the balancing and what does it mean for the development of Mercedes power unit and Petronasis ASF? Thanks.
04:14Yeah, as you said, with new regulations, it's always a dynamic development.
04:27And at the beginning of the season, we have decided that we are going to change the regulations for next
04:34year in terms of more power.
04:36So, there's going to be a higher fuel flow to generate the more power.
04:44This, again, doesn't change anything on the formula of the fuels we are using today.
04:51And we like, you know, we like challenges if, on the engine and fuel side, things need to, you know,
04:57stretch even more in order to accommodate regulatory chains,
05:02whilst keeping a performance about which that's, you know, that's exactly what we want.
05:06What's the response to your question?
05:10Probably, I add a little bit also because we are also challenging ourselves how to make it much economical.
05:16And that's also part of the challenge that we are facing now, that we are, our scientists are focusing on
05:24the options that we can do to make it cheaper,
05:26but still maintaining the performance. So, that's one of the greatest challenges we have.
05:30But it's fun to find that challenge.
05:34And how much time and effort goes into developing the EIFAS, and what is it actually made of,
05:40what is it actually made of, and how is it different from previous fuels before this?
05:46I think we don't have much time during that time.
05:49When we kick off the, when Formula FIA, having the new regulation for 2026,
05:56I think they are now somewhere, 2022.
05:58So, we have about four or three and a half years to prepare for that.
06:01And in our experience also, if you start from scratch into commercial production, that is a very stress target.
06:09However, working closely with Mercedes, because we developed the engine and also the fuel together,
06:14we kind of also tweaking the things along the way.
06:17And Alhamdulillah, by 2026 early, I think we made the fuel ready, and it's the test that is right.
06:24And there is a lot of component behind it, the technologies behind it, and also, even the project management.
06:31We bring the best project management to make sure that when we build the fuel plant, it's been done on
06:37time.
06:37I think that's also another biggest challenge that we have.
06:40Not, also, not forget the certification.
06:43Actually, the certain British fuel certification is a very tedious process.
06:47Because we need to make sure every combination of GHG being evaluated.
06:52So, those kind of things, I think we go through.
06:55But the most important thing is the knowledge that you have from that.
07:00So, when we test at the first, the most serious question,
07:04when we handle other options, this is much easier for us.
07:06I think that's the benefit that we see in this process.
07:09Thank you very much numbers.
07:09And.
07:10Go번 If it shows.
07:16Go!
07:17Go.
07:17Go.
07:18Go.
07:18You
