00:04Octopuses are incredibly intelligent creatures, with some pretty unique skills.
00:08They have camouflage to disguise themselves from others, and if that doesn't work,
00:12they can blast disorienting ink into the water for a quick getaway.
00:15But if even that doesn't work, a new study has found that some females will throw objects
00:19at those they want to leave them alone.
00:21The research was done just off the coast of Australia, in an area so densely populated
00:25with the cephalopods, it's been dubbed Octopolis.
00:27And over the last 6 years, researchers have recorded the creatures throwing things at
00:31other octopuses, and most of those doing the throwing are the females.
00:35Here's what the researchers had to say about how an octopus throws things.
00:38Force is not imparted by the arms, as in a human throw, but the arms organize the projection
00:43of material by the jet.
00:45But why?
00:45Well, they believe the lady octopuses throw things at males to ward away their...affections.
00:50And they're not a bad shot either.
00:51Of all the recorded instances of females shirking away their own kind, the octopuses hit their
00:56targets 33% of the time.
