Then his body went into overdrive. He skied until the world went black. When he woke up he was alone: no food, no map, no help. For days he kept moving through the Arctic — eating pine buds and even a raw bird. Then his foot hit a landmine.
He survived the blast. He kept going. Finnish soldiers eventually found him barely alive.
Aimo Koivunen lived to 70.
