00:0145-year-old Richard Clayton murdered his mother, 74-year-old Angela Clayton, in the early hours of Tuesday, 17
00:10February, at their home in Newham.
00:13The old bailey was told Clayton had stolen from his mother to buy cannabis and cocaine before and after her
00:20death.
00:21In January, he pawned a gold pendant and chains while his mother was in hospital and withdrew £200 in cash
00:29from her bank account after he killed her.
00:33Unemployed, Clayton had also repeatedly called a phone sex line as his mother lay dead in the house nearby.
00:41Later that afternoon, he called 999 and said he had done something stupid and strangled his mother after having a
00:49quote-unquote breakdown.
00:51Police and paramedics arrived and found Mrs Clayton in her bedroom. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
00:59Clayton was taken to custody and charged with murder the following day.
01:04Mrs Clayton was described as a fiercely devoted mother and grandmother who was loving, selfless and kind.
01:11The judge said she was entitled to feel safe in her own home when she was attacked by her son,
01:19who was under the influence of drugs at the time of the murder.
