00:02I could see exactly how many times I had left to meet someone.
00:06For most people, it was one.
00:08For my childhood best friend, Caleb Morgan, it was 31,441.
00:12So ever since we were kids, I treated him like my future husband.
00:16And I even make a perfect boyfriend rule book to keep him on a tight leash.
00:20Later, we went to college together.
00:23Caleb joined the school football team.
00:25And I joined the cheer squad.
00:26Because of his humor, the cheerleading girls all love to hang around him.
00:31Soon, Caleb is getting tired of all my perfect boyfriend rules.
00:35Caleb thought I was annoying and tried more than once to set me up with a boyfriend.
00:39Stop making up that crap about how many times we'll meet you, little shadow.
00:43His eyes were smiling, but his words cut deep.
00:47One of my teammates is pretty hot.
00:49Why don't you try seeing someone else?
00:51He pulled out his phone and started scrolling through photos.
00:53The first one on the screen was a picture of him with the cheerleader.
00:57It was Madison Reed, cheerleader of my squad.
01:00He quickly swiped to the next photo.
01:02He's just kind of quiet, but he's cool.
01:04You're stuck to me all day, like...
01:06I stared at the long number over the guy's head in the photo.
01:09For the first time, I agreed.
01:12Okay, then send me his contact.
01:14I pulled out my phone.
01:15Caleb's face instantly went pale.
01:17Seriously?
01:17The moment I handed him my phone, Caleb abruptly turned off his screen.
01:22My phone's dead.
01:23Next time.
01:24That massive number over his head reflected in my eyes, falling fast.
01:28Finally, it dropped to nine.
01:33My heart sank, but I didn't say anything.
01:35Seeing me stare at him, Caleb's expression finally eased a little.
01:39Come on, let's go.
01:41It was Friday, and a light rain was falling.
01:44That girl on your phone, that was Madison Reed, right?
01:48Caleb stiffened.
01:49It's from a school sports event.
01:50I forgot to delete it.
01:51We're not even together.
01:51You're always trying to control everything.
01:53I went quiet, looking at the nine above his head.
01:56The ache in my chest somehow faded.
01:58I was just asking.
01:59I wasn't planning to control him anymore.
02:01It was just the first time I realized the road from the athletic complex back to the apartment
02:05was this long.
02:07After all, I already knew Caleb and I had no future.
02:09Of course, I had no right to control him.
02:12You know damn well whether you were just asking.
02:15Ever since we were kids, I haven't even had a female friend around me.
02:18But he used to just go along with it.
02:20It is only recently that he started pushing back then.
02:23Go ahead.
02:24I won't interfere anymore.
02:28My voice wasn't loud.
02:30Caleb's breathing grew heavier.
02:32The veins on the hand gripping the umbrella handle stood out.
02:35He seemed about to say something.
02:36Then, his phone rang.
02:38The name, Madison Reed, kept flashing on the screen.
02:41Caleb didn't answer.
02:42He held the phone stiffly and looked at me with dark eyes.
02:46Old me would have thrown a fit, made him recite the boyfriend rules, then snatched his phone
02:51and hung up.
02:52But now I stared for a few seconds and looked away.
02:55The phone finally stopped ringing.
02:59Caleb, could you walk me back to my dorm?
03:01Madison said it in such a pitiful way.
03:04Not going to control me anymore, is that it?
03:06Caleb said, and already walked towards Madison, I said nothing.
03:10I just stared coldly at the number above his head.
03:147. Behind him, I saw a guy walk towards me.
03:17He is exactly the roommate Caleb was going to set me up with.
03:20He wore a blue training jacket and carried a training bag, a sharply defined face, icy
03:24blue eyes.
03:25That's definitely the most handsome guy I have ever since.
03:28The massive number Caleb just lost was now hovering above this guy.
03:35Fate had played one hell of a joke on me.
03:38Ever since I could remember, I'd been able to see numbers above people's heads.
03:42Later, I understood.
03:43They were the number of times I had left to meet that person.
03:46Dad could stay with me until I was 88.
03:49Mom could stay with me until I was 89.
03:52And Caleb, the pretty boy who lived next door, could stay with me until we were old.
03:57Because the number above his head was so, so long.
04:00Longer than everyone else's numbers combined.
04:03When I was 5, I asked Caleb,
04:05What does being together 31,441 times mean?
04:08He ran to ask his mom.
04:09When he came back, he wore his mother's silk scarf on my head as a veil.
04:14It means we'll be together for a really long time.
04:16It means we'll get married.
04:18So I raised Caleb like my future husband.
04:21When we were little, I wouldn't let him hold other girls' hands.
04:24When we grew up, I wouldn't let him accept love letters from girls.
04:28Caleb always indulged me.
04:30But no matter what, he never agreed when I confessed to him.
04:33If I really got together with you, I'd be completely whipped.
04:36When we were 18, he poked my forehead and laughed.
04:39Miss Bossy, wait until I'm 25. I haven't had enough fun yet.
04:42So I waited.
04:43I kept thinking that when he turned 25, we'd be together forever.
04:47But in just one year after college started, he grew more and more impatient with me.
04:51I couldn't say I was heartbroken, just a little regretful.
04:54If I'd known the numbers could change, I wouldn't have tried so hard.
04:58Got all those years babysitting him honestly exhausting.
05:04I quickened my steps towards the guy without thinking.
05:07The closer I got, the faster my heart beat.
05:09By the time I was almost behind him, I suddenly had no idea what to say.
05:13Hey handsome, are you my future husband?
05:15Would you believe me if I said we end up together?
05:17Every option made me sound unhinged.
05:20Cringing at myself, I kept staring at the number above his head and following him.
05:24Until he stopped, then slowly turned around.
05:27My eyes widened slightly.
05:29A label seemed to appear right next to his number.
05:33This is my man.
05:34But what really caught my attention was the number above his head.
05:3726,290.
05:38He was unbelievably gorgeous.
05:40Far better than Caleb's photo.
05:42His skin made his lips look soft and impossibly kissable.
05:46Beautiful eyes under sharp brows stared quite.
05:49My face grew hotter and hotter.
05:52Can I help you?
05:55His voice was beautiful.
05:57His eyes calm as water.
06:00Will you be scared walking back to the apartment by yourself?
06:03The second the words left my mouth, I wanted to black out.
06:06What the hell was I saying?
06:08The corner of his mouth seemed to twitch into a faint smile.
06:11I mean, we seem to be going the same way.
06:13Do you want to walk together?
06:14Okay.
06:15His voice came from beside me.
06:16Mason Carter really was like Caleb said.
06:19He didn't talk much, but he wasn't awkwardly quiet.
06:21I'd never experienced a sun shower like this before the rainbow painting.
06:25A rainbow right across.
06:26When we were almost at the apartment complex, I felt a little annoyed.
06:30It seemed like we'd walked too fast.
06:32Mason Carter.
06:34That's my name.
06:36I know.
06:37Ava Bennett.
06:38Before I could explain how to spell it, he nodded.
06:41I know that too.
06:45My hand shook a little.
06:46I pulled out my phone.
06:47This was my first time ever hitting on someone.
06:49I looked at the number above his head to give myself courage.
06:53Don't be scared.
06:54He's your future husband.
06:55Can I have your contact?
06:57The air went quiet for a few seconds.
06:59Sorry, I didn't bring my phone.
07:01How about I...
07:01Such an obvious rejection line nearly knocked the breath out of me.
07:05That's fine.
07:06Sorry for being weird.
07:07Even after I rushed into the apartment building, my heart was still pounding.
07:11My nose even stung a little.
07:13So humiliating.
07:14He must have thought I was crazy.
07:16Even when Caleb said cruel things to me, I'd never felt this awful.
07:20But right now, the ache was unbearable.
07:22As soon as I walked in, Caleb's voice sounded behind me.
07:25Ava.
07:26I turned and saw Caleb walking over.
07:28He carried the cold air of the athletic complex on him and a trace of women's perfume.
07:33I think I saw you at the intersection just now.
07:35You came back with someone?
07:36Looked like a guy.
07:38Do I know him?
07:39You're back.
07:40Caleb, did you get yourself a girlfriend?
07:42Caleb froze.
07:43What?
07:47My mom pointed at the side of his face.
07:50That girl's lipstick mark is still there.
07:52Caleb's face grew paler and paler.
07:54He raised his hand and wiped his face hard.
07:57It brushed on by accident.
07:59Ava, I didn't.
08:00I was still stuck in the sadness of being rejected by Mason and couldn't be bothered with him.
08:05I'm not dirty.
08:06I remember everything you told me to do.
08:08She slipped downstairs by the dorm just now.
08:10I helped her up.
08:11Maybe it was then.
08:12Halfway through, he suddenly stopped.
08:14There was actually a trace of joy in his eyes.
08:16I won't walk with her next time.
08:18Don't cry.
08:18I wasn't crying.
08:19I was just upset, thinking that the next time Mason saw me, he might be annoyed.
08:25What you do has nothing to do with me.
08:27I said I won't control you anymore.
08:28Stop bothering me.
08:29Caleb's smile faded a little, but his lips still pressed together.
08:34Still being stubborn, huh?
08:35That depressed feeling lasted until early the next morning.
08:38I walked out of the apartment building, yawning, then froze when I saw the person not far away.
08:43Mason Carter stood there.
08:45Gray athletic hoodie.
08:46Training bag on one shoulder.
08:48The morning fog was thick, and the loose hair on his forehead was damp with mist.
08:52When he saw me, he slowly walked over.
08:55I brought my phone today.
08:59He took out his phone and held out his QR code.
09:02Can I still have your contact?
09:04My heartbeat grew louder and louder.
09:09You waited here this early just to ask me my contact?
09:11Mason pressed his lips together.
09:13I didn't know which apartment was yours.
09:15Oh, cute.
09:16I quickly scanned his code.
09:19It's Saturday.
09:20What if I didn't come out?
09:22I don't know.
09:23Have you had breakfast?
09:23Didn't eat, huh?
09:24Lucky you.
09:25Then I'll give you a chance.
09:26Buy me breakfast.
09:27I happily grabbed him and ran toward a breakfast place near campus.
09:30Mason Carter didn't hate me at all.
09:32He liked me a lot.
09:34I just didn't expect to run into someone we knew over breakfast.
09:37When Madison saw me, her eyes filled with disdain.
09:40She wore a football supporter hoodie with Caleb's jersey number printed on the chest.
09:44Her cheer bag was slung over one shoulder.
09:47Caleb isn't coming.
09:48I invited him out this morning and he wouldn't even come.
09:51You little shadows sure are well informed.
09:53I didn't react for a second.
09:56Ava Bennett, can you stop clinging to him?
09:58He almost agreed to my confession yesterday.
10:01In the end, he only turned me down because he said you'd get mad.
10:03You two aren't even together.
10:05Why are you controlling so much?
10:06Only then did I understand.
10:08She was targeting me because of Caleb.
10:16I've already made things clear with Caleb.
10:19You don't need to tell me about whatever's going on between you two.
10:22Thinking of my chosen future husband standing behind me,
10:25I couldn't wait to completely separate myself and Caleb.
10:27You serious?
10:31I wish you and Caleb all the best.
10:34She pressed her lips together and pulled out her phone.
10:37Say that again.
10:38I'll send it to Caleb.
10:39I looked at her with mixed feelings.
10:41Someone suddenly grabbed my wrist.
10:42Mason's eyes were a little cold.
10:45She doesn't owe you an explanation.
10:46His fingertips were cool, but the place he held burned hot.
10:50When Mason and I walked out of the breakfast place,
10:52I saw Madison raise her phone and take a picture of our bags.
10:56Are you a little upset?
10:57He ate quietly.
10:59They said you've liked Caleb for years.
11:01His voice was a little hoarse.
11:02Caleb talked about you in the locker room.
11:04My chest tightened.
11:05He looked up at me.
11:07He said you're controlling?
11:09He said you're clingy.
11:10He said you used some number thing to trick him.
11:13I thought he didn't deserve all the years you spent revolving around him.
11:16Later, I would learn that Mason had noticed me even earlier.
11:19Back when I was still at cheer practice, rehearsing routines under the stadium light.
11:24Back when I only looked for Caleb on the field.
11:26Back when I jumped, fun, smiled, and shouted Caleb's name with the rest of the squad.
11:31Mason had been standing on the other side of the field, helmet tucked under his arm, silently watching me.
11:36And I had never once looked back at him.
11:39I looked at the long number above his head and couldn't help smiling.
11:42My smile made him a little annoyed.
11:44His ears turned red and he stopped talking.
11:46I leaned closer and poked his cheek, puffed slightly from chewing his bagel.
11:50If he's that bad, then what do you think about me liking someone else?
11:54He turned his head to look at me.
11:55Can you switch who you like?
12:00I can.
12:01As long as that person treats me well enough, I can switch.
12:04Mason lowered his head and ate his bagel.
12:06I didn't know what he was thinking.
12:07When I got back to the apartment, I saw someone sitting in the living room.
12:10I thought it was my dad and headed straight for my bedroom.
12:13Someone grabbed my arm.
12:15Only then did I realize it was Caleb.
12:16Where did you go?
12:17His face dark.
12:19To buy breakfast.
12:22Where's mine?
12:22Only then did I remember.
12:24Whenever I bought breakfast, I always brought Caleb something too.
12:27Today, I was too busy flirting with Mason.
12:29I'd completely forgotten.
12:31Who is this guy in the photo?
12:33Who did you buy breakfast with?
12:35Caleb opened the photo Madison had sent him.
12:37In the picture, Mason held a breakfast bag in one hand.
12:40His other hand was holding mine.
12:41Do I know this guy?
12:42A vein throbbed faintly at Caleb's temple.
12:44Ava Bennett, you're fucking holding hands with another guy behind my back?
12:50I looked at him calmly.
12:51Caleb was very handsome.
12:53A star wide receiver on the football team.
12:56A lot of girls on campus liked him.
12:57But now, I always felt like something was missing.
13:00Later, I realized what it was.
13:02Caleb didn't have a mole under his eye.
13:04Before meeting Mason, I'd never thought guys with moles under their eyes were that good looking.
13:08Just like before meeting Mason, I thought Caleb was perfect in every way.
13:13But now, I only thought he was noisy.
13:17I'm asking you a question.
13:19Who are you thinking about?
13:20For a moment, I felt guilty.
13:22He could tell?
13:23Say it.
13:24He reached out to pinch my chin.
13:25I frowned and dodged.
13:27What does it have to do with you?
13:28Caleb's mouth opened slightly.
13:30I looked at him coldly.
13:32Who are you to me?
13:34Why are you controlling so much?
13:39Ava.
13:39He rubbed his brow.
13:41So you've changed tactics?
13:43You've been getting more and more temperamental lately.
13:45Forget it.
13:46I won't argue with you.
13:47My phone buzzed.
13:48It was a message from Mason.
13:51Are you free at noon?
13:52The corners of my mouth had just started to lift.
13:54My parents won't be at the apartment this afternoon either.
13:57What should we eat?
14:00Before I could say anything...
14:02Caleb, are you home?
14:03It was Madison.
14:04Caleb paused.
14:05Then he turned back to look at me and Pam.
14:07I walked to the window and looked down.
14:10I didn't invite her.
14:14Caleb's voice trembled a little.
14:16He immediately took out his phone and showed me the chat history.
14:21Look, I turned her down.
14:24I don't know why she came here.
14:26I looked at the sweat on his temple.
14:32I have plans today.
14:33You don't need to cook.
14:35Caleb's eyes darkened.
14:40I already explained.
14:41Are you still going to throw a tantrum?
14:45I've said it many times.
14:46Your business has nothing to do with me.
14:50I also won't control who you talk to.
14:52Isn't this what you always wanted?
14:54Turned and left with a tense face.
14:56Fine.
14:57Don't regret it.
14:58Downstairs, Madison's delighted voice rang out.
15:01If this had been before, I definitely would have made a scene.
15:03What I wanted was a clean man.
15:05I'd get mad if anyone else touched what was mine.
15:08But now, hearing Caleb deliberately raise his voice downstairs to agree,
15:12I smiled and replied to Mason's message.
15:14Sure.
15:14See you at noon.
15:18Mason didn't talk much.
15:20He also didn't have many extra expressions,
15:22but I really liked the way he looked at me.
15:25For several days in a row,
15:27I completely threw Caleb to the back of my mind.
15:29The next time I heard news about him was another Friday.
15:32That hot wide receiver on the football team
15:34seems to be with Madison from our squad.
15:37I saw them holding hands downstairs by the athlete's dorm last time.
15:44Doesn't he have a childhood sweetheart?
15:46That girl used to follow him to the stadium every day.
15:50Haven't seen her lately.
15:52Probably having a fight.
15:53I sped up packing my things and pretended I hadn't heard.
15:57Mason didn't have class or training this afternoon.
16:01We'd agreed to go to the amusement park.
16:03The thought of seeing my future husband again
16:05made it impossible to keep my smile down.
16:12But when I saw Caleb downstairs outside the girl's dorm,
16:16the smile slowly faded.
16:18He wore his team jacket,
16:20a training bag slung over his shoulder.
16:23When he saw me come out,
16:25his eyes lit up.
16:28Let's go.
16:32Only then did I remember.
16:33Before, every Friday,
16:35we would go back to the apartment together.
16:37Caleb naturally reached out to take my backpack.
16:39I took a step back.
16:41He frowned.
16:43Still mad?
16:44People passing by secretly looked at us.
16:46You've been avoiding me lately.
16:47Did you hear some stupid rumors?
16:48I shook my head, then nodded.
16:52Don't listen to their nonsense.
16:55We're just doing game promotions
16:56for the football team and cheer squad.
16:57Some contact is unavoidable.
17:00You can't control even that.
17:02I kicked the toe of my shoe against the ground.
17:04The sun was so strong.
17:06Would Mason get sunburned waiting for me
17:08at the campus gate?
17:10That's my fault, okay?
17:11Seeing me ignore him,
17:13Caleb took a breath.
17:14I'll clear up those rumors as soon as possible.
17:18I'm still your clean, untouched fut...
17:20Before he could finish,
17:21Madison rushed over happily.
17:24Caleb?
17:26I thought you said you weren't interested in her.
17:29Caleb's face fell as he tried to explain I built it.
17:35At the campus gate,
17:36Mason stood there quietly.
17:37He wasn't wearing training clothes today.
17:39Just a white t-shirt and white shorts.
17:41Broad shoulders, narrow waist,
17:43ridiculously good looking.
17:45I ran up to him.
17:46Mason's eyes brightened slightly.
17:48It's so sunny, why didn't you wait in the shade?
17:49And he reached out to take my backpack.
17:51I wanted to stand somewhere you could see me right away.
17:53Without thinking, I replied,
17:55No matter where you stand, I can see you right away.
17:57The cicadas of Midsommar couldn't drown out the heartbeat.
18:01I couldn't tell whether it was his or mine.
18:05Mason had never been to an amusement park.
18:07I dragged him all over the place.
18:09He followed quietly.
18:10On the football field,
18:12Mason was fierce.
18:13When opponents crashed into him,
18:15he didn't even blink.
18:16He'd lower his shoulder and drive them right back into the turf.
18:19But now, I dragged him to buy ice cream,
18:22ride the carousel,
18:23and line up for photos.
18:25He didn't complain once.
18:26He only looked at me with deeper and deeper eyes.
18:30Mason, do you have a girl you like?
18:32I shoved the ice cream into his hand
18:33and pretended to ask casually.
18:35He looked at me for two seconds,
18:36then lowered his head
18:37and scooped the cherry on top over to me.
18:39Not before.
18:40I smiled and pressed him.
18:41How long ago is before us?
18:43His voice was very low.
18:45Before I met you.
18:49I froze.
18:53Are you confessing to me?
18:54He thought about it seriously for a few seconds.
18:56No.
18:57I stared at him in disbelief.
18:59Mason Carter, are you a jerk?
19:03You say you like me, but you won't even confess.
19:09How's that different from Caleb?
19:11At the mention of Caleb,
19:13his eyes flickered.
19:14He pressed his lips together and stood up.
19:22Wait here.
19:24I was about to grab him
19:25when a gasp suddenly came from not far away.
19:28That ride was the water slide.
19:30Madison's clothes were soaked.
19:31She was shyly hiding in Caleb's arms.
19:34Caleb frowned, but he didn't push her away.
19:36He even covered her with his jacket.
19:38They looked so intimate
19:39they could have passed for a couple on a date.
19:41And the people around them started teasing them.
19:47Why did I keep running into them everywhere?
19:49I was about to leave when Caleb and I locked eyes.
19:53The second he saw me,
19:54he reflexively shoved Madison away.
19:56She got drenched even more.
19:58Caleb!
19:59She looked up in confusion,
20:00only to see him rush toward me in panic.
20:04Ava, it's not what you think.
20:06She said she bought two tickets
20:07and had never been to an amusement park,
20:09so I thought I'd go with her once.
20:10He spoke fast, even stumbling over his words.
20:12We didn't do anything.
20:15Just now.
20:16I looked at him calmly.
20:18Ava Bennett, I'm on a date with another girl.
20:21I touched my nose.
20:25Who isn't?
20:26What's there to brag about?
20:27He didn't hear clearly
20:28and his tone turned irritated.
20:30You're not mad?
20:31I said it already.
20:32Your business has nothing to do with me.
20:36Madison's face was ugly with anger.
20:38She caught up and hooked her arm around Caleb's.
20:43Ava Bennett,
20:44can you stop following Caleb around?
20:46He's so sick of hip-
20:48Caleb yanked his arm free hard,
20:50his face dark.
20:51What does it have to do with you?
20:53Who are you to talk about her like that?
20:54She's not following you.
20:56Mason's voice sounded from behind us.
20:58I turned around
20:59and saw Mason standing outside the crowd
21:01with a bouquet of flowers in his hands.
21:03She came with me.
21:04His eyes were cool.
21:06His presence was strong.
21:11I think I understood
21:12what he had just gone to do.
21:14Caleb looked like
21:15he'd been struck speechless.
21:19You too?
21:20I ran over,
21:20took the flowers from him
21:22and smiled up at Mason.
21:23Are these for me?
21:24He looked away from Caleb
21:26and ruffled my hair.
21:30Yeah.
21:31Caleb's roar came from behind us.
21:35Ava Bennett!
21:36Only after meeting Mason
21:38did I realize
21:39that a truly good man
21:40didn't need raising from childhood.
21:42He knew how to keep himself in line.
21:44If he couldn't even control himself,
21:46why was he still yelling?
21:48I rolled my eyes
21:49and grabbed Mason's hand to leave.
22:00Ava Bennett,
22:01try it if you dare!
22:06Always with the threats,
22:07Caleb would never hearing
22:08heavy footsteps chasing us.
22:10I grabbed Mason's hand
22:11and bolted wind
22:12carried the scent of flowers between us.
22:15Our palms still laced together
22:16turned warm and damp
22:18the noise around us.
22:19Fell away just my pulse
22:20and the smile
22:21I couldn't fight down eventually.
22:23Caleb's voice faded.
22:25I knew a very must have caught him.
22:27I stopped
22:28and met Mason's bright shining eyes.
22:31His eyes were shining
22:32a little too brightly.
22:36I'm not like him.
22:38Mason,
22:38did that look like
22:39we were running away together?
22:40Wait, there's...
22:41We spoke at the same time.
22:42Then both froze.
22:43When I realized
22:44what we'd just said,
22:45I burst out laughing.
22:46Mason looked at me.
22:47Ava Bennett,
22:49I don't want to be like Caleb.
22:53I looked up guides.
22:54They said a confession
22:55should be formal.
22:56Not only do you have to check
22:57how the girl feels,
22:58you're supposed to have flowers.
23:00I wasn't planning
23:01to confess today.
23:02There weren't any flowers
23:03in the amusement park
23:04so I went out to buy some.
23:05He paused.
23:07Maybe it still
23:08isn't formal enough.
23:10But I don't want to be
23:11the same as Caleb
23:12in your eyes.
23:15Ava Bennett,
23:16I like you.
23:18Can you like me back?
23:24I stared at him,
23:25panicking.
23:26He quickly added,
23:27I even memorized
23:27the boyfriend rules.
23:28Always accompany me,
23:29always obey her orders,
23:31always follow blindly.
23:32How do you even know those?
23:33I stood there,
23:34utterly speechless.
23:35I held his hand.
23:37I don't hold hands
23:38with people I don't like.
23:39He froze.
23:40Then after understanding,
23:41he pulled me into his arms.
23:46So we're together now?
23:48No.
23:49His eyes darkened.
23:50I smiled.
23:50You're not just my boyfriend.
23:52You're my future husband,
23:53remember?
23:54Mason paused.
23:55Then he gave a low laugh.
23:56Okay, babe.
23:57He lowered his head
23:58and kissed me.
24:04Hey, how are you doing?
24:06We're here, babe.
24:09Mason dropped me off
24:10at the apartment entrance.
24:12The moment I looked up,
24:13I saw Caleb standing there,
24:15dark and stormy.
24:21I knew he'd be waiting
24:22to corner me.
24:23I held the flowers
24:24and ignored him completely.
24:25What does this mean?
24:26He grabbed my arm at once.
24:27I waited all afternoon.
24:29Where the hell did you go?
24:30I looked at him
24:31like he was insane.
24:35Went on a date
24:35with my boyfriend.
24:36Didn't see it?
24:37Caleb's grip tightened.
24:39His chest heaved hard.
24:41Boyfriend?
24:42Mason Carter?
24:44You got a boyfriend,
24:45so what does that make me?
24:46I shook him off.
24:47Someone with a problem.
24:52What do we have to do
24:53with each other?
24:53Caleb's face went dark.
24:55He snatched the flowers
24:56from my hands.
25:02We have nothing
25:02to do with each other.
25:05You controlled me
25:06all these years
25:06and that's nothing?
25:08You told me
25:09I was your future husband
25:10and that's nothing?
25:12You said we'd be together
25:13forever and that's nothing.
25:15The flowers hit the ground.
25:17I got angry too
25:18and slapped him.
25:22What right do you have
25:23to question me?
25:25Wasn't it you
25:25who wanted to introduce
25:26him to me first?
25:27Wasn't it you
25:28who told me
25:28to stop clinging to you,
25:30stop controlling you
25:30and said you didn't
25:31want to be with me?
25:32Now what the hell
25:32are you freaking out about?
25:34Caleb's lips trembled.
25:37So you got together
25:38with someone else
25:38just to piss me off?
25:40I looked at him
25:41in disgust
25:42and bent down
25:42to pick up the flowers.
25:44Then I saw Madison
25:45standing not far away.
25:52Madison pressed her lips
25:54together and was about
25:54to say something
25:55but Caleb snatched
25:57the flowers
25:58from my hand again.
25:59The next second
26:00he threw them
26:02straight into
26:02Madison's face.
26:04Get lost.
26:07If you weren't
26:07always clinging to me
26:08and saying bad things
26:09about Ava
26:10she wouldn't have
26:10gone and got together
26:11with someone else
26:12out of spite.
26:12Madison cried
26:13and ran off.
26:15I frowned at Caleb.
26:16Didn't look like
26:17he just had
26:17a temper problem.
26:18Looks like he had
26:19violence issues too.
26:21Caleb stared at me hard.
26:23Break up with him.
26:26I'll pretend
26:27none of this happened.
26:32I won't see
26:32Madison again either.
26:33We'll go back
26:34to how we were.
26:36I looked at him
26:37with disgust.
26:38Didn't think you
26:38not only had
26:39a violence problem
26:40but also liked
26:40to dodge responsibility.
26:41He froze.
26:43If you dump
26:44the blame on someone else
26:44does that erase
26:45your issues?
26:47Caleb you really
26:48disgust me.
26:49I turned and went
26:50back to my room
26:51without looking back.
26:55The second I was
26:56apart from my boyfriend
26:57for even a little while
26:58I started missing him.
26:59Are you happy today?
27:00He replied instantly.
27:02Very.
27:02Is Ava happy?
27:04I smiled like an idiot.
27:06A little?
27:07What are you doing?
27:09Showering.
27:10Just two words
27:11and I couldn't
27:12stop grinning.
27:13Then he sent
27:14another message.
27:15Does Ava want
27:15to watch me shower?
27:17I stayed quiet
27:18for a long time
27:19then covered my mouth
27:21and laughed.
27:22A video call request
27:23popped up quickly.
27:25After hesitating
27:26for a few seconds
27:27I answered
27:28with a red face.
27:30On the screen
27:31Mason had just
27:32finished showering.
27:34His damp hair
27:34was dripping.
27:35A towel hung
27:36over his shoulder.
27:37Water slid down
27:38his jaw
27:39and along his throat.
27:40Broad shoulders.
27:42Narrow waist.
27:43His body
27:43was absurdly good.
27:45All those hours
27:46in the weight room
27:46and on the football field
27:47clearly hadn't
27:48gone to waste.
27:50Why are you
27:51covering up so much?
27:52I swallowed.
27:55Pull the towel
27:56down a little.
27:57Mason paused.
27:59His eyes deepened.
28:01But that long
28:02elegant hand
28:03really did slowly
28:04pull the towel down.
28:07After I saw
28:08his shoulders,
28:09collarbones,
28:09and chest lines
28:10I swallowed again.
28:11He obediently
28:12tugged it lower
28:12but the way
28:13he looked at me
28:14was anything
28:14but obedient.
28:16Ava.
28:17That's as far
28:18as it goes.
28:20His voice
28:20was low
28:21and hoarse.
28:22If you want
28:23to see more,
28:23I'll show you
28:24in person
28:24next time.
28:25I felt a little
28:26disappointed.
28:28Mason Carter,
28:29you're really
28:29generous.
28:30You show that
28:31to just anyone?
28:32The screen
28:32shifted back
28:33to his face.
28:34Mason frowned.
28:36Only you.
28:38We stared
28:38at each other
28:39in silence.
28:40He was so good
28:41looking.
28:41His eyes
28:42were bright
28:42when he looked
28:43at me too.
28:44Then his phone
28:44dinged.
28:45Mason's expression
28:46darkened.
28:47Who messaged you?
28:49He looked down.
28:50I don't know.
28:50Some unknown number.
28:53She said her name
28:54is Madison.
28:55My stomach dropped.
28:57I've already
28:58blocked her.
29:00I cleared my throat.
29:02What did she say?
29:04She said she heard
29:05you say being with me
29:06was just to make
29:07Caleb jealous.
29:08That you don't
29:08really like me.
29:09I exploded instantly.
29:12What the hell?
29:13I was about to explain
29:14when Mason nodded.
29:15I know.
29:16You're not that
29:16kind of person.
29:17His tone was calm
29:18but cold.
29:20People like that
29:20can't come between us.
29:21I looked at him
29:22and sniffed.
29:24Then why are you upset?
29:25His throat bobbed.
29:27Today you went
29:28to the amusement park
29:28with me.
29:29You've been there
29:30with Caleb too.
29:31He mentioned it
29:32in the locker room
29:33before.
29:34Ava,
29:34I'm your boyfriend.
29:36I get jealous easily.
29:37He said it very low
29:38but not soft at all.
29:40My heart was
29:41full of bubbles.
29:43I did go to
29:44the amusement park
29:44with Caleb
29:46but in the future
29:47I'll only go with you.
29:50I went with him
29:51to a hundred places
29:53then I'll go with you
29:54to a thousand.
29:54He stared at me
29:55and suddenly spoke.
29:57Do you know
29:57the Ferris wheel legend?
29:59We both don't have
30:00class or training
30:01tomorrow afternoon.
30:02How about we go together?
30:04I nodded.
30:05I was happy all day
30:08until noon
30:09when I heard someone say
30:10The two main football players
30:11got into a fight.
30:12Seems like one of them
30:14stole the other guy's girlfriend.
30:15My heart jumped.
30:17I ran straight toward
30:19the football training facility.
30:23Caleb had trained in boxing
30:24since he was little
30:25and later he played football too.
30:27I was afraid Mason
30:29would get hurt
30:29but when I got to the outside
30:31of the training facility
30:32I realized I'd worried
30:34for nothing.
30:35Caleb was pinned
30:35against the wall
30:36by Mason with one hand
30:38his face red with rage.
30:40You bastard!
30:42Home wrecker!
30:44I treated you like a teammate
30:46and you went after Ava Bennett?
30:47Mason's face was ice cold.
30:49He smashed a fist
30:50into the wall
30:51beside Caleb's ear.
30:52The whole area went silent.
30:54You knew Ava Bennett liked you
30:57and you still spent
30:58all that time
30:59in the locker room
30:59talking crap about her.
31:01You enjoyed
31:02how good she was to you
31:03and still kept flirting
31:04with cheerleaders.
31:05He looked down at Caleb.
31:06If you won't treasure her
31:09I will.
31:11If I hear you curse her again
31:12next time
31:13it won't just be you
31:14against the wall.
31:15I walked up
31:16when Mason saw me
31:17he finally let Caleb go.
31:19Thank you so much for Swater
31:20You are welcome to my family
