00:00Paul, as ever we can keep it to two questions per person and if we do have time we'll come
00:04back to you at the end.
00:05Rob, do you want to get us out of the way?
00:07Lewis, good to see you.
00:08Hello, you alright?
00:08And actually great to see you training again today because I know you missed a session or two last week.
00:13With that in mind, how are you? How's the fitness?
00:16Yeah, really good actually. Yeah, like you said, I didn't miss much.
00:20So yeah, feeling really good and yeah, looking forward to tomorrow.
00:24In the aftermath of a World Cup, how important is the Nations League for you personally?
00:30Yeah, it's always important.
00:33I think as a nation you always pride yourself in being the best and yeah, that's what we want to
00:39be.
00:41So I think yeah, it's a competition that we'll look to try and win.
00:45But yeah, I think any game that you play, play for your country and whenever you represent the nation,
00:50it's important that you do well and you put a good account of yourself and yeah, we'll be looking to
00:56do that.
00:57Hi Lewis. You've only played twice under Thomas Tuchel, so what's he said to you about this camp and what
01:04are you looking forward to showing basically?
01:07Yeah, I think it's interesting because obviously all the lads have been together for seven weeks or whatever it was
01:14in the summer.
01:15Created good bonds, good relationships and yeah, understood what was required of them.
01:20So for me, it's just about coming in and sort of indulging into that and yeah, taking on all the
01:27information.
01:27And yeah, whenever I get my opportunity, just yeah, making sure I do the right things.
01:33You're in that March camp before the World Cup as well and there's always a talk, isn't there, about England
01:38and natural left-backs.
01:40Do you feel like this is your chance to kind of create your era?
01:43Someone drops out, we see that, don't we, with players, they take a chance and then make the position their
01:47own?
01:48Yeah, yeah, you mentioned it there. Whenever there's injuries or different things that happen, there's always opportunities for other players.
01:59But yeah, there's been a lot of good left-backs over the last couple of years who have played in
02:03that role.
02:04But yeah, whenever I get my opportunity, I'm going to try and take it.
02:13Yeah, we're expecting a really difficult game. We know that they're a very proud nation and yeah, I think whenever
02:22you play international football from what I've experienced so far and from what I've seen during my lifetime of watching
02:29the games, yeah, it's always a tough games and yeah, we're looking forward to it.
02:33What do you want to say about Lukáš Horníček, your player with Newcastle? Was there some message or something like
02:41that?
02:42Well, yeah, he's obviously a great keeper. I know him well from the club. But yeah, we'll be looking to
02:49win the game tomorrow and yeah, as much as he's a great guy, I hope he's not on it tomorrow,
02:55so.
02:57Can anyone else come in?
03:02Come on down? Come back to Rob? Come back to you then, Rob. Cheers.
03:12Cheers.
03:13Lewis, you've had to be very patient to wait for your opportunities and your stats this season and for a
03:18big chunk of last season were amongst the top, certainly defensively in the Premier League.
03:23And we know your ambition, we know how much you want to play for your country. Has it been difficult
03:27to sit back and wait and especially that World Cup when you didn't get a nod for the squad?
03:34Yeah, I think whenever you've been in good form throughout a season, like I felt like I was last year,
03:40I think anyone who was in a similar situation to me who didn't get selected, there's going to be a
03:46sense of disappointment.
03:48But yeah, I'm just looking to use that and bounce back and yeah, hopefully I can create a good account
03:55of myself here and yeah, I'll be looking forward to these games here.
03:58And can you give us an idea of what the discussions in camp have been like in the debrief since
04:02the Spain game?
04:03Because I mean, Thomas said for that middle 30 minutes, it's almost as good as you've seen England play for
04:08a good while and maybe the other two 30 minutes Spain showed their real class.
04:12A game you could have won if that penalty goes in, a game you maybe could have lost in the
04:16first 30 minutes when they could have scored four.
04:18So how do you sum all that up? What have you guys been talking about in camp?
04:23Yeah, I think whenever you play a game, you're always going to review it.
04:26And I think, yeah, like you said there, I think throughout the game, there's a lot of positives to take.
04:33Yeah, I think we can be really proud of the performance that we put in.
04:38And yeah, I think it's like football is a lot of the time.
04:41It can sometimes come down to mistakes and small margins.
04:46But yeah, we're really proud of the performance we put in that day and yeah, we'll look to build on
04:52that.
04:52It feels like this for the Nations League ambitions is must win though, doesn't it?
04:56Because of that defeat and because you've only got six matches to play in the whole of the...
05:00Yeah, I think so. I think every game's a must win in the Nations League.
05:05We still have to play Spain away at their place as well.
05:10And yeah, I think we're as good as anybody when we play at our best.
05:13So yeah, there's no reason why we can't win all the remaining five games in this group.
05:18Thomas has spoken about the turnaround between the games.
05:21I know you haven't played yet, but what's it been like in camp?
05:23Have the rest of the squad found it difficult?
05:25And have you had this quick turnaround when there's been like two and a half days between games before?
05:31Yeah, I've experienced it quite a lot at club level.
05:34Obviously, but the European competition is always playing every two, three days.
05:40So yeah, I've been through that quite a lot.
05:42So I'd say I'm fairly used to that.
05:45What was the other bit, sorry?
05:46Just Thomas saying, it's quicker than usually normally.
05:49It's Saturday, Wednesday rather than Saturday, Tuesday.
05:50But is that difficult to recover for from a player?
05:55Yeah, I guess it depends how much we're used to it really.
05:58We've got a lot of players here who are playing in Europe,
06:02whether that's Champions League, Europa League or whatever.
06:04So yeah, I think a lot of the lads are used to it.
06:06And yeah, when you come here, you're representing your country.
06:08I think it's always a little bit easier to recover knowing that you're representing the nation.
06:13So yeah.
06:13I've got Sam at the back row there in the middle.
06:22Hi, Lewis.
06:23You said just now that you're taking on a lot of information,
06:27trying to get ready for the game because you weren't with the players at the World Cup.
06:31How much information is that?
06:33What does that look like?
06:34And do you like that level of detail being given to you before you step into a team?
06:40Yeah, I think I experienced it a little bit in the March camp, which was obviously in preparation for the
06:45World Cup.
06:48So yeah, I'd say it's not massively different in terms of what I experienced there.
06:53But yeah, when there's a group of players, we've been together for seven weeks.
06:57Yeah, I'm always going to be playing catch up a little bit in terms of the messages that the manager
07:02is trying to get across.
07:04Yeah, like I said, if I can just keep taking in this information, it's only going to help me when
07:08I do get my opportunity.
07:10There's a lot of good players in the squad.
07:12There's a lot of good players on the roster.
07:13Some didn't make it because of injuries and there was pullouts as well.
07:17I think in announcing the squad, Thomas talked about Trent Alexander-Arnold and the possibility to claim the shirt and
07:24fight for the shirt.
07:25Do you feel like every time you get on the pitch with England, you've got to fight to retain that
07:30jersey?
07:31And do you like that competition?
07:33Yeah, it's a heavy shirt.
07:35I mean, you're representing England, one of the best countries in the world.
07:40So yeah, whenever you step on the pitch, you've got to be at your best.
07:43You've got to be doing the right things because there's a lot of stake.
07:47And yeah, I think everyone who's in the squad and even players who aren't in the squad know how much
07:53it means to each other to play for our country.
07:56So yeah, it's always nice competition.
07:58And yeah, I think it's healthy to get the best out of players.
08:01Okay, I think we're all done.
08:03Thank you very much.
08:03Have time with Tuchel shortly.
