Director Babak Khajepasha, maker of "Land of Angels," speaks candidly about telling the stories of children killed in war, from Gaza to Minab. He explains why he believes audiences should be pushed to think rather than simply weep, what he saw at Hiroshima's memorial, and why he thinks major film festivals have lost their way. He also talks about filming during the forty-day war and why he sees family as the heart of his cinema.

00:00A father walks towards the place where his enemies killed his child.
00:06He goes there again and again, hoping they'll strike him too, so the pain will finally stop.
00:15But they don't.
00:16They hid everyone around him instead.
00:19Because keeping him alive, keeping him broken, does more damage than his death ever could.
00:25That is the story our guest today heard directly from a family in Gaza, a story that shaped
00:33one of the most talked about films to come out of Iranian cinema in recent years.
00:39Babak Khadja Pasha is a filmmaker who has made a career out of walking into the world's
00:45open wounds.
00:47His latest film, Land of Angels, tells the story of children in Gaza, and it carried Iran's
00:54flag all the way to ask our consideration, which obviously was rejected.
00:59And when the 40-day war came to Iran itself and the skies over Tehran were far from quiet,
01:07Khadja Pasha didn't wait for the cameras to be ready.
01:10Only few days after the war started, Babak and his colleagues were already filming.
01:16Not because it was good timing, but because, as he puts it, this wasn't filmmaking anymore.
01:23This was duty.
01:24In this conversation, we asked him how a filmmaker tells the story of dead children without drowning
01:31the truth in melodrama.
01:33We asked what he saw in Hiroshima that left him more disturbed than moved.
01:38And we asked him something few filmmakers are willing to answer honestly.
01:44Whether the world's biggest film festivals are really about art anymore or about something
01:50else entirely.
01:51This is a conversation about grief, about power, about the family as the last line of defense
01:57for culture, and about what it really means to make a good film when the world is burning
02:03around you.
02:04Stay with us.
02:07.
02:34.
02:40.
02:41The film is the last scene in Iran and in the U.S.C.E.A.
02:46Where did you come from?
02:54In my opinion,
02:58I would like to see a film artist
03:01and the purpose of this scene is the reason for this scene.
03:08You need to discover the truth that we need to transform ourselves.
03:23I think I should look for a project of the story.
03:29There is no limit of being a man of the father.
03:34I have a project of the story to a man of the family.
03:38We have a lot of the events in La Merda, the events in Taboriz, in Kermansha, and in many of
03:47the cities we have a lot of children and children.
03:52And the fact that the people in the war, especially in the war, is very important.
04:03. . . . . . . . . .
04:34. . . .

05:27. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
05:31. . .
05:31and that I have the power of them and it was very dirty,
05:37I would say that they had to go and leave me there
05:40and they would probably never leave me there.
05:44Because they wanted me to change the way they could.
05:46They wanted me to change the way they wanted me.
05:48And it was also the case that in the context of the other way,
05:51the fact that I have an idea is that I don't think it's the case.
05:57And in the end of the day, we are going to be able to make a difference between human beings
06:04and human beings.
06:06This is a difference between the two and the two.
06:10The truth is that you can say that you have a lot to say.
06:14If you have a job, when you have a story,
06:17when you have a story in the world,
06:19when you have a story in the world,
06:20in the world,
06:21.
06:21.
06:21.
06:21.
06:21.
06:21.
06:21.
06:22.
06:22Thank you very much.
06:55Thank you very much.
07:25Thank you very much.
07:59Thank you very much.
08:35Thank you very much.
13:59Yeah.
15:08Yeah.
15:13Yeah.
15:15Yeah.
18:00I don't know.
18:28It's not a situation that you are able to do it and do it in the world.
18:37Yes.
18:38I feel that this festival doesn't do this work.
18:43It's the same way that the festival doesn't do this work.
18:47It doesn't work that the war is in a country.
18:51It's a situation where the government or the government should be able to do this work.
19:03The government should be able to do this work.
19:11The first time the government should be able to do this work.
19:15When the organs of their work, they are involved with the soldiers and the soldiers, they are involved in this
19:23situation.
19:24The world is the same.
19:26But in Hiroshima and Tokyo, or in many of the countries,
19:31where they are in the world, some people see that they are sad.
19:38Some people see that they understand.
19:41In Japan, the people who have been in Iran are the first few years, the first few years, was a
19:49leader of Mena.
19:51Yes, there is.
19:52And the people who have been in Turkey, in Russia, in Singapore, in any way,
19:59or in any way that you have reached the end of the country.
20:03and I really want to be a dream.
20:05I want to be a dream.
20:08I want to be a dream.
20:09And my heart is the most beautiful way of this country.
20:12I hope I am.
20:14The film in the dark of your friends,
20:17is the Iran's in an Oscar of 2025.
20:21Do you know when you have one of your friends,
20:24that Oscar has been in the way of the film.
20:27I am not sure what the other thing is.
20:28It is a way to the other side of this film.
20:32It is a way to the political side of this film.
20:33Now that you are going through this process,
20:38you are going through this process.
20:38And so,
20:39while the film is in a film
20:42in a film of Bainul-Milal,
20:43what is your view of the cinema in Bainul-Milal?
20:48What is your view of the film in Bainul-Milal?
20:48I have a question that I have to say.
20:50I have a question that I have to say.
20:52I have a question that I have to say.
20:55I have to say that I have to say that I can't see.
20:58I am a film of this film.
20:59I am only seeing the identity of the film in Bainul-Milal.
21:04Let me see if I have a perspective.
21:06I have to say that
21:06the modern culture in the States
21:10is like the politics of America.
21:14It is like a politics.
21:16It is a society that
21:17has been a good place
21:18that has been a good place
21:19and have a good place
21:21in the world
21:22I am a fan of the music that was coming to the stage.
21:27It was also the most important part of my opinion.
21:29I think it was a good idea.
21:32But now I am looking at the same place.
21:33I am looking at the same time.
21:35You can tell me that you have to put in the places of the upper part of the country.
21:41You can tell me that you don't see it.
21:44You can tell me that you don't see it.
21:46You can tell me that you don't see it.
21:47And you can tell me that you have to put it in your head.
21:53And it's not that the Oscar is a good idea
21:57It's a good idea
22:00But it's a good idea
22:02The film has been very strong
22:06Like Godfather
22:07I have a great idea
22:10I have a lot of films
22:13I have a lot of films
22:14I have a lot of films
22:17But I feel like
22:18I feel like the movie is
22:22I don't feel like it
22:28But it's a good idea
22:28It's a good movie
22:28It's a good movie
22:29It's a very popular lecture
22:32It's a good idea
22:34It's very popular
22:36It's a good idea
22:38It's a good idea
22:38It's really good
22:39It's a good idea
22:47Of some of it
22:48I'm going to leave my mind.
22:51I'm going to leave my mind.
22:53I'm going to leave my mind.
22:56Now, there is a way that if you are a citizen of Palestine,
23:01he has a strong influence.
23:06If you are a strong influence,
23:08he has a strong influence.
23:09Who is this?
23:11This is a translation and translation.
23:13Who is this?
23:14Who is this?
23:15Because it is about reflecting this history.
23:17This is against politics.
23:18I am officially the power of these stories now.
23:20Never had me to leave my mind.
23:24I can set these stories in time.
23:25If I can get the following stories,
23:27vemos in Africa and see them ?
23:30I can't tell you?
23:32And with allThis stories,
23:33I say not to have?

23:58we can understand it
24:05Mr. Kone Anders
24:08You can find, in the example, place in the middle of the field or in the mountains or in the
24:15middle of the field.
24:16No, this is a artisan.
24:18For people to know they are most empathetic and creative.
24:23If you think of the way you get a government culture at the end of the century, the cas troubles.
24:31I will tell you about the people that are putting closer and brighter
24:35to the bigger political parties.
24:41My best to put it on their own.
24:44They are going to help from the Philippines.
24:47They have to help from the Philippines, from the Philippines.
24:50They are going to help from the Philippines from Gucci.
24:52Will they do it properly?
24:54Do you know what you mean?
25:24meekunen.
25:25Be s'mt jamaic naga meekunen

36:36Kerman Shah. Why, in his words, is the world being tested through its children? He told us that grief
36:45without a why behind it changes nothing, that the world has already watched the unbearable footage
36:51from Gaza and from Bosnia and still nothing changed. So instead, he builds distance into
36:59his films on purpose, the same distancing technique used by playwrights and directors he admires.
37:06So the audience doesn't just cry but keeps thinking long after the credits roll. He also gave us an
37:13unusually candid look behind the curtain of international cinema, from what he felt
37:20standing in Hiroshima during the annual memorial, to his skepticism about which films get celebrated
37:27at major festivals and why. And whether or not you agree with him, it's rare to hear filmmaker
37:33speak these plainly about the politics behind the awards. And through all of it, one thing kept
37:41returning, family, not as a nostalgic ideal but as what he calls a cultural foundation under threat,
37:50one he believes Iranian cinema as a responsibility to protect. Land of Angels is now heading into
37:57international screenings including the Kazan Film Festival and Khadja Pasha will soon serve as a
38:04juror at the Bricks Plus Film Festival in Saint Petersburg. Our thanks to Babak Khadja Pasha for the
38:11honesty he brought to this conversation and to you for watching. If the conversation made you think
38:17a little differently then, in his words, it did the job.
