00:01Rubble, Israeli drones overhead, Lebanese soldiers on the ground. This is what
00:07recovery looks like in southern Lebanon. I'm in Zawtar al-Gharabiyya, a Shia village
00:12within the first and so far only pilot zone created under a US brokered
00:17framework. The idea behind these zones is simple. Israel withdraws, the Lebanese
00:23army takes control, Hezbollah disarms, and the displaced can return. But reality is
00:29far more complicated. We saw that within minutes of arriving. I'm standing in
00:34Zawtar al-Gharabiyya, overlooking Zawtar al-Shari'ya, which still remains under
00:39Israeli occupation. And from here you can see what that reality looks like. A house
00:44is still burning in the background as a result of a drone strike, locals tell us
00:49from this morning. What we're seeing isn't limited to the Israeli controlled
00:53side, a Lebanese army colonel tells me. The fully implementation of the plan is
01:00constrained by the Israeli actions and violations, including fires directed to
01:06LAF, personnel and patrols. These incidents have caused renewed displacements and
01:12high-nared stabilization efforts, preventing the LAF from fully completing its deployment
01:18and activities. Israel says its continued military operations
01:23and presence in southern Lebanon are necessary to counter Hezbollah, which it insists still poses
01:29a threat. But for Ali Hraybi, who is from Zawtar al-Gharabiyya, the biggest threat is Israel's
01:37presence so close to his home.
01:40This is my house. When we think about it, we stop thinking about it.
01:45We don't know anything tomorrow. The Israelis are far away from us, about a thousand meters,
01:52as you can see. And this is the Israeli drone. This is how it goes with us.
02:00Throughout our time in Zawtar al-Gharabiyya, what appeared to be an Israeli surveillance drone hovered
02:06overhead, at times coming especially close as we conducted interviews. Ali says that's
02:13nothing new. He shows me a video of a similar drone hovering over his son. This is what Ali's
02:19home looked like before he had to flee in March. He walks me through what's left of it now.

03:06Ali is among the few who've returned to Zawtar Al-Gharbiya.
03:10Local officials tell us only around 100 of the 500 families who once lived here have come back,
03:16but they hope the introduction of basic services and mobile homes will bring more.
03:21The army has set up a checkpoint at the entrance of the village,
03:24but security remains a major concern.
03:27There's supposed to be a ceasefire here in southern Lebanon,
03:31but standing in this destroyed village, that can be hard to believe.
03:35Since we've arrived, we've heard a number of explosions in the area,
03:39and the few people that have returned tell us they live in constant fear.
03:45That ceasefire was agreed in June, after the latest round of fighting began on March 2nd.
03:52That's when Hezbollah fired missiles and drones at Israel for the first time since an earlier ceasefire agreed in November
03:592024.
04:00Hezbollah's rockets came after the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and the killing of Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
04:08His picture now overlooks the destroyed central square in the nearby city of Nabatiyya, a Hezbollah stronghold.
04:16I came here to get a sense of how locals view Hezbollah,
04:19which people in the area often refer to as the resistance,
04:23and to find out how much support the Iran-backed group still has.
04:27As soon as we arrived, a plain-clothed man identifying himself as a Hezbollah member approached us
04:34and insisted he be present when we spoke to locals.

05:58What they mourn is not just their home, but the life they had here.
